How to Make Your Descriptions Less Boring
We’ve all been warned about the dangers of using too much description. Readers don’t want to read three paragraphs about a sunset, we’re told. Description slows down a story; it’s boring and self-indulgent. You should keep your description as short and simple as possible. For those who take a more scientific approach to writing fiction, arbitrary rules abound: One sentence per paragraph. One paragraph per page. And, for god’s sake, “Never open a book with weather” (Elmore Leonard).
But what this conventional wedding wisdom fails to take into account is the difference between static and dynamic description. Static description is usually boring. It exists almost like a painted backdrop to a play. As the name suggests, it doesn’t move, doesn’t interact or get interacted with.
There were clouds in the sky. Her hair was red with hints of orange. The house had brown carpeting and yellow countertops.
In moderation, there’s nothing wrong with static description. Sometimes, facts are facts, and you need to communicate them to the reader in a straightforward manner.
But too much static description, and readers will start to skim forward. They don’t want to read about what the house looks like or the stormy weather or the hair color of each of your protagonist’s seventeen cousins.
Why? Because they can tell it’s not important. They can afford to skip all of your description because their understanding of the story will not be impacted.
That’s where dynamic description comes in. Dynamic description is a living entity. It’s interactive, it’s relevant. It takes on the voices of your narrators and characters. In short, it gives us important information about the story, and it can’t be skimmed over.
So how do you make your description more dynamic so that it engages your readers and adds color and excitement to your story? Here are a few tips.
(I have a TON more tips about setting and description. These are just a few. But I’m trying to keep this short, so if you have any questions or want more advice about this, please feel free to ask me.)

Whew, okay, so there’s a post going around right now with some really good information, but it’s a little bit obscured by the fact that it is in all caps and sort of…aggressive, so if anyone wants a quick reference for some commonly misspelled/misused words but gets triggered by being told in all caps, here it is retyped:
Common misspellings:
Piqued (instead of peaked, or peeked): Your interest is aroused
Fazed (instead of phased): to bother or disturb (usually in the negative), ie “it didn’t faze him.”
Psych: (vs sike or syke) Got you! A shortened version of ‘psychological’ or ‘psychology’ and a play on the idea that you have messed with someone’s mind.
Common word confusions:
Breathe: Present tense verb (as in “don’t forget to breathe!” Breath: Noun (take a breath)
Wander: To walk around aimlessly, to travel Wonder: To ponder or be curious about something
Defiant: Resistant (to glare at someone defiantly) Definite: certain (you are definitely going to the party)
Wanton: Deliberate, unprovoked Wonton: A chinese dumpling
Bawl: To cry Ball: a circle
Sleight: A trick, as in “sleight of hand” Slight: A little
Complementary: Something that goes well with something else (”Those colors are complementary”) Complimentary: Intended as a form of flattery
**A quick side note: the original post also included a cartoon of “complementary” versus “complimentary” coffee which was actually incorrect. If the coffee is free, it is intended as a compliment to the guests, which makes it complimentary coffee, not ‘complementary’ coffee
Misused idioms/compound verbs and phrases:
Might as well: (apparently someone in the OP has seen “mind has well” floating around?) Why not?
Should have (not ‘should of’): A common mistranslation from spoken-to-written English due to the contraction “should’ve” (which sounds almost identical to “should of”).
Couldn’t cares less (vs Could care less): “Could care less” implies you do care a little when you want to imply you don’t care at all. A very common idiom you will see used in both ways in many cases, though the first is the original and technically more grammatically true to your intent.
These are all the ones that appeared in the original post. I would like to take a moment to remind you that if you have misused one or more of these words/phrases, you are not a bad person; these are ‘commonly’ misused for a reason! English is difficult and it’s awesome that you’re learning to write and wanting to become better at it. Please feel free to add to this post as well if you would like, but let’s keep it kind. :)

5) Mira = Look / look here
Ex: “Mira, sólo digo que a mí no me parece una buena idea.” = “Look, I’m just saying that I don’t think that it is a good idea.”
6) Che: Hey, hey buddy ( mostly used in Argentina but also used in Uruguay and Valencia, Spain)
Ex: “¡Che! ¿Qué tal, hombre?” = “Hey! What’s up, man?”
7) A ver: Let’s see
Ex: A ver… ¿qué podemos hacer esta noche? = Let’s see… what can we do tonight?
8) Vamos a ver: Let’s see
Vamos a ver qué hay para hacer esta noche = Let’s see what there is to do tonight
9. Está bien / Dale = Okay, a synonym of Spanish in Spain is “vale”
Ex: “Mañana te llamo, ¿dale? – ¡Dale! / Está bien.” = “I give you a call tomorrow, okay? – Okay!”
10) Tipo / como = Like
Ex: “Es tipo / como el pie Americano” = “It’s like the American pie”
11) Entonces: So, therefore
Ex: “Entonces, cuando vas a visitar a tu abuela?” = “So, when are you going to visit your grandma?’
12) Este: Uh, umm, ah
Ex: “Sí, este… rompí tu telefono” = “Yeah, umm…I broke your phone”
13) A propósito / por cierto: By the way
Ex: “A propósito, ¿sabes dónde está María?” = “By the way, do you know where Maria is?”
14) Luego: Then (it can also mean “later” in another context)
Ex: “Fui a la farmacia y luego a casa” = “I went to the drugstore and then home.”

This is a summary of college only using two pictures; expensive as hell.
That’s my Sociology “book”. In fact what it is is a piece of paper with codes written on it to allow me to access an electronic version of a book. I was told by my professor that I could not buy any other paperback version, or use another code, so I was left with no option other than buying a piece of paper for over $200. Best part about all this is my professor wrote the books; there’s something hilariously sadistic about that. So I pretty much doled out $200 for a current edition of an online textbook that is no different than an older, paperback edition of the same book for $5; yeah, I checked. My mistake for listening to my professor.
