things I think would be awesome to explore more about Ryland and his personality in fanfics (or tbh just stuff about him) (this was born from me reading the book and seeing more to him)

He’s genuinely hilarious (calling the robot on the ship stupid, guessing his name is john because he’s a white man who speaks English, “mental reminder: do not get into an arm wrestling match with an eridian” ,telling stratt to shut up, “just making words up at this point” and the jokes he makes throughout the book!!! His thoughts too like how he disses himself for not swearing) like he does joke around

to add to that, he doesn’t swear. Or rarely does. I think the only time he actually swore was when he saw rocky/his ship I don’t fully remember

hes stubborn and stands up for his beliefs (his argument with dr. Lokken, him insisting everyone else is wrong while he’s the only right one, him openly calling ideas stupid and why he thinks they’re stupid)

but he’s also (reluctantly) able to admit when he’s wrong

HES A BRAT!!! Like the way he just pouts to himself and goes “hmph!” Kills me. Like when he thought to himself how rocky can see his ship but for someeee reason he isn’t small enough to fit through the tunnel rocky made. Or when he has to admit he was wrong and goes “hmph… I guess astrophages are made out of water…” or when he just tells stratt to be quiet because she called him out on something. Loves calling people jerks. Did it to a military guy instead of learning his name, called rocky a jerk.

adding onto him being a brat, he’s also sassy as hell. Has an attitude at times!!! Doesn’t just roll over and accepts anything people say, and when he does he sure as hell complains about it to himself, like when he called rocky a jerk. Loves talking back to stratt (“why? I’m not volunteering.) (“it’s a suicide mission. It’s not like we’ll have a line of people saying ‘Oh, me! Please! Please me! Pick me!”)

he knew people on earth. He had friends. He had a friend he hung out with regularly enough for the people working at the place they hung out at to know his order by heart!

HE DOESNT LIKE GETTING HIS BLOOD TAKEN! It makes him queasy. Especially seeing it does.

his dynamic with his students. He’s such a good teacher. He cares so much about them as people and their education. “They’re not my kids, but they’re *my* kids”. His panic attack over them possibly dying due to the sun dimming. Them being his motivation to keep going.

I had the best film watching experience of my life watching Project Hail Mary the other day (spoilers)

Not because it was good (which it was), but because I was high as shit and I went in not knowing anything, expecting it to be a grounded, human isolation focused hard scifi story Ala gravity or the Martian, so I was preparing myself for that, and when the aliens showed up in their cool ship I was like !!!!!!!! And when it was a cute little rock friend I was like WHAAAATTTTT THIS RUUULLESSS AHHHH lol I legit got so excited for wholesome fun sci-fi with fun nice aliens I lost my mind, I was screaming. It was like watching og star trek with the silicon based life for for the first timewhen I was 9 it blew my mind lol 🤣
