Its to the point where most Americans can’t conceive of a walkable community because everywhere is like this and several generations have now grown up in a world like this. There’s hardly anyone that can conceive of a world that isn’t like this. Most people either cave in and get a car or end up isolated. I live in a city that’s mostly walkable by North American standards and I still end up walking in the dirt on the edge of a stroad a lot of the time.

Was having a conversation about “representation” in trans art just now and had a realization.

I think I’ve seen more Black transfemme memorial tribute art than I’ve seen art depicting Black transfemme characters. Like yes representation is the bare fucking minimum but. do you have any idea how little Black transfemme art I see that isnt the “five o’clock shadow” type or Marsha or because yet another one of us got killed and it’s in tribute?

There’s an omnipresence of white trans folks in popular trans art because whiteness is the currency of attention online and everyone else gotta pay the BIPOC Attention Tax, and even if you specifically look for it, often algorithms and censors that target all transfemmes but disproportionately affect transfemmes of color will make it hell to find unless you know EXACTLY what/how to find it.

But honestly it’s just really fucking me up to realized I’ve seen more artistic tributes to dead Black trans women than I’ve seen other art depicting Black trans women, because nobody cares about us til we another statistic.

Part of why I share my modeling photos, or even my selfies like I do, is bc so many people like me never get to see others that look like us even within our own marginalities. That it doesn’t stop at being white, or petite, or abled, or cis. That there are other people even more like us within our marginalities, that we aren’t fucking alone in a society that uplifts the same types of people to the “top” even within a marginalized group.

Yeag representation is the bare minimum but it hits a lot different when you’re a fraction of a percent of a fraction vs. the most populously seen of a marginality.

if you, like me, are hesitant to enjoy what kinda sounds like "relaxes food standards" on the surface, I'm happy to report that this isn't "everyone can do what they want with your food supply without oversight" but rather a case where in NYC you had to have a permit to sell food and a second, superfluous permit to sell frozen desserts. This action simply removes the need for the second permit, rolling it into the first permit in order to help small businesses. Yay!

Yeah, it's part of a larger overhaul of city regulations to streamline processes which currently make opening small businesses unnecessarily burdensome (reduce redundancies, moving the single location of the required certification classes to a more central location instead of the Upper East Side, getting rid of bureaucratic layers which are just rubber stamps & don't add any oversight to the process, etc) & to clarify regulations (ie making it so you only have to look in one place to find all the rules instead of them being spread across multiple places where you might miss some). It's a good move overall based on discussions with the community on their needs & struggles.

If you're wondering why there was a separate permit for ice cream in the first place, it's the last vestige of a strict permitting of dairy in general which was put in place because in the early 1900s dairy - & especially milk - was a huge vector for foodborne illness. Regulation of dairy was heavily reinforced in the 30s & 40s (a lot by Mayor La Guardia) when ice cream was starting to get really popular so rules for frozen desserts (you needed proper facilities, they needed to be made with pasteurized milk if they included milk, etc) were added, with the permitting being a way to enforce inspections. Eventually, these things began to be regulated on the state, national, & industry levels so the NYC laws became redundant but no one ever went in & modernized the permitting until now.

You might know him from a thread where he was getting wowed by free appetisers in a Mexican restaurant.

Firstly: He is doing a bit pretending to be a wandering samurai. It's a joke and his posts are all made up. This is very obvious if you actually look at his account and website:

He does purport to be Japanese but based on some of the other content he posts there's reason to believe he's British.

Which brings me to my second point: his Samurai content is interspersed with posts like this:

The chips and salsa thread went viral in June and his website seems to have gone live in July. This confirms what I suspected which is that said website with it's explicit disclaimers was made in response to the big viral hit.

Consequently, back when he first blew up it was potentially a bit harder to figure out that his stories are fictional. That said, the New York Times worked it out so I'm comfortable accusing outlets who ran the story describing him as a Japanese world cup tourist of legitimately terrible journalism.

Regarding some comments in the notes:

Yeah this is also the guy from the truck thread going around. That's what prompted this post and in retrospect I should have said so explicitly.

He claims he just uses AI to translate his posts from Japanese. He also says the art on his website isn't AI generated. I think he is full of shit on both counts.

I only gave a couple of examples but even on a brief look through his twitter it was apparent that he posts a LOT about UK politics to the point where he's quite patently British. He is a Restore supporter which is a party that split away from mainstream far right party Reform due to feeling they weren't right wing enough.

It might not surprise you to hear he does not seem to know shit about Japan? Both the salsa story and the truck story failed the smell test for people who are familiar with Japan. There's also a story about going to a potluck where he seemingly couldn't come up with a single Japanese dish for the character to cook??

Yeah his whole bit is racist and it is troubling that so many people took a guy badly roleplaying as a medieval samurai to be a 21st century Japanese tourist.
