sensual is the desire to be intimate like… cuddling and stuff i guess? often people who are romantically attracted to someone are sensually attracted to them too so its not often thought of, it only ever really comes to play as a specific attraction by itself when someone doesnt feel romantic attraction. and alterous is an aro term it’s not romantic attraction but not platonic its like… between the two? like a desire to be in an intimate relationship with a woman but never actually feeling romantic/sexual attraction to someone specifically.
also i get how alterous attraction can sound… fake. or “just” friendship. but its like more intimate than friends but not romantic. its hard to explain cuz its a feeling, yaknow?

i’ve thought about what i’m saying and i’ve experienced these things on my own. i didn’t come about aroace lesbian through tumblr. i noticed my attraction to girls but i also knew i was aroace and it took me awhile to work out what i was and what the feelings were etc. this was all self introspect things and has nothing to do with tumblr. i didn’t even know other people had that identity until i met a girl on discord a few months ago. she didnt know others felt those feelings either! i didn’t even know tumblr knew about aroace lesbians, or that it was even a Thing and not just words i was using to describe my experience, until a couple of days ago.
i learned the word alterous attraction today, but i’ve known it and the definition for a long time. so i was excited to finally find a word! it makes it easier to be able to communicate my experiences and feelings.

the least modern thing in the odyssey is all the slavery, but also like...the ethics in general. homer (the abstract homer) understands that being enslaved is a very terrible thing to happen to you, but doesn't really seem to think *buying* or even really selling slaves is like, a bad thing to do. which i think is just a particular example of a general policy where homer doesn't seem to think like, harming people is bad. it's a weirdly amoral book. characters mostly just care about their own self-interest, or the interest of their loved ones, plus social consequences of harming people you dont care about. it emphasizes the guest right heavily, but this is explicitly framed as "if you break guest right, zeus will kill you". there doesn't seem to be an idea that something is wrong to do in itself. i wonder if plato was thinking of the odyssey and similar tales when he wrote thrasymachus...
The Odyssey, like many stories from older times, places a lot of moral weight on hierarchies.
Odysseus is a king and a warrior and beloved by Athena. So it is a great tragedy when he is betrayed by his men, losses his ships and loot and power, losses his autonomy and freedom to Calypso. He is brought low- until he is literally naked and shipwrecked, at the mercy of Princess Nausicaa's kindness. And it is good and right when he regains his power and authority when he returns to Ithaca and cleanses his palace with *soooo* much bloodshed.
It's fine if a swine herd is treated like a swine herd, but it is unjust and tragic for a KING to be treated as a begger. (So, yes. Odysseus and Penelope own slaves. And the story treats this as fine. Of course the king and queen would own slaves. That's the hierarchy. Which is wild for modern audiences.)
It's not that you can treat other people however you want, but that you should treat people according to their place in the social hierarchy. Guests have a specific place in that hierarchy, and guest/host obligations are HUGE in the story. But also the obligations between captain/crew, king/subject, god/mortal. (And man/woman. The gender politics, especially when you look at Circes switch from antagonist to ally, and Odysseus being forced into the wife role with Calypso are *intense*) (Also, slave/master. The reason that the slave girls are killed because they slept with and were friendly to the suitors is because by doing so they were disloyal to Penelope and Odysseus. Never mind our modern understanding of consent and coercion- their deaths are needed for Odysseus to reestablish his authority on Ithaca. It's the most brutal part of the Odyssey, and by far the most difficult for modern audiences to grapple with.)
We often talk about Hubris as being about arrogance, excessive pride, but it's more accurate to frame hubris as Pride which violates those hierarchies, excessive because it doesnt acknowledge ones proper place. Pride which makes the common man think he's better than a king, Pride which makes a king think he's better than a God.
Id argue that it isn't so much that the Odyssey is amoral, so much as its morals are very different from our own. We are very used to a moral worldview which holds that all people are equal, that how you treat others should be consistent and equitable, without regard for class or caste. And that's an incredibly *modern* worldview.
Unorganized initial thoughts below, many spoilers.
Mostly, I like how much attention Ithaca got. We spend a lot time there, and both Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson are great.
I like that we got to include a lot of characters that normally get cut or glossed over- Argus, the swine herd, the nurse. Two of the best moments in the film are when Telemacus sees Odysseus greet Argus, and when the nurse recognizes the scar on his foot. Excellent moments. Well done.
The underworld scene? Very good.
Mentor training Telemachus? Great.
BUT- The movie has this weird thing going on where the monsters and magic and ghosts are definitely real, but the gods are like.....maaaaaaaybe real but never appear. Which is maybe tonally consistent, but makes some characters like Circe and Calypso.....really weird. Calypso especially just...loses any context or explanation.
And adaptations NEVER include Nausicaa.
And he took out Penelopes best moment in the whole thing, which was very frustrating. (The ending is.....yall.)
And the Cyclops encounter was....confusing. like I'm just not super sure....what it's supposed to convey now. It loses its context as both a violation of hospitality and hubris. So its just...a thing that happens?
And like, this again is a tone thing, but we never get any real moments where we get to see the glamor and power of the women in the story. Circe loses all reverence and authority. Calypso is just....there. Helen....Jesus. having her face scarred as punishment for the war is fucking *crazy.* and even Athena.
Like, what....what does it mean for the goddess of wisdom to be a guilt ghost? Zendaya looks incredible and absolutely haunting, but like...what does that mean, especially when Athena is so strongly tied to his connection to Penelope?
The movie also does the same thing that Epic the musical did funnily enough, which is give Odysseus a lot of guilt and trauma about the violence at Troy.....but then really really tone down the brutal violence done at Ithaca (mostly by omitting the execution of the slave girls)
And look. I think I could forgive all of that. I really could. Except "Our Age of Bronze is collapsing" is a real line of spoken dialogue that nearly sent me over the edge. I thought I was going to have a fucking aneurysm in the theater.

Also, he gave Odysseus a weird Batman The Dark Knight Rises ending. And I'm so confused about it.
Odysseus fucking name dropping the Bronze Age is like Leonardo De Vinci writing in his journal "wow what a beautiful day here in the Italian Renaissance. I sure am pleased to be experiencing The High Renaissance period"

Sometimes you'll see a character that's not canonically aromantic but when you see them shipped with another character you think "ok this feels like aro erasure"
positioning grace as some sort of "victim" of eva stratt is so weird to me. they're freak4freak, they were unhealthily co-dependent on each other and had an insane dynamic going on that works for them and should never be applied to anyone else.
the fact that grace fails to consciously acknowledge basic facts about his life and social status is not her fault and not her responsibility either. that's a grown ass man, a scientist, a teacher. he can be aware if he wants to be, but it's uncomfortable and he avoids discomfort like hell. he runs from confrontation, he runs from challenges, especially emotional ones. that's a defining characteristic of him.
she didn't turn him into anything, he willingly went along with all of it and if he had wanted to see it, he would have known that he was always on the damn list of candidates/science officers.

the fact that stratt had two other people in front of him — literally the perfect candidate — shows how much she cared and understood that he didn't want to go.
she wanted to keep him on earth, god, she really wanted to keep him. but she could not choose him over the world, no matter how badly she wanted to say fuck it and send someone else.
