i'm so looking forward to Autumn; university, mittens, big jumpers, pink cheeks, hats, scarves, visible breath... it's all good.

1.2 million children are kidnapped and sold for cheap labour every year. Child trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world, second only to the drugs trade. And it's going on all around us in the shadows. We don't see it, because we don't want to. Look beneath the surface.

Hour of the Mockingjay
So, word on the street is Suzanne Collins' gripping dystopian trilogy The Hunger Games is currently being made into a film. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) will be playing the role of Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming film, set to be released on March 23rd, 2012.
Being a huge fan of the books, I admit, those feelings of apprehension and uncertainty bubbled up inside me in the form of a hundred annoying little questions: will the film stray to far from the original book, altering it in my mind forever (like what happened with Philip Pullman's Northern Lights when it was transformed into the film The Golden Compass. There's nothing worse than a bad film to ruin a wonderful book)? Will it morph into a drama about teen love in unusual circumstances? (Twilight.... let's not go there.) And, overall, will it be any good (script, performance, cinematography, setting, etc)?
However, I was just checking out the details on imdb, and I have to say the main cast seems okay. I especially think Jennifer Lawrence was a good choice; she certainly looks the part anyway.Â
Lawrence describes her first encounter with Ross last winter, during the height of Oscar season. âHe was asking me what the experience was like,â she recalls, âand I just kind of opened up and said, âI feel like a rag doll. I have hair and makeup people coming to my house every day and putting me in new, uncomfortable, weird dresses and expensive shoes, and I just shut down and raise my arms up for them to get the dress on, and pout my lips when they need to put the lipstick on.â And we both started laughing because thatâs exactly what itâs like for Katniss in the Capitol. She was a girl whoâs all of a sudden being introduced to fame. I know what that feels like to have all this flurry around you and feel like, âOh, no, I donât belong here.ââ
When Lawrence was offered the role, she said she felt a mixture of elation and desperate anxiety. âI knew that as soon as I said yes, my life would change,â she says. âAnd I walked around an entire day thinking âItâs not too late, I could still go back and do indies, I havenât said yes yet, itâs not too late.ââ
And yet, who can turn their back on Katniss? âI love this story,â she says, âand if I had said no, I would regret it every day.â After officially signing on, Suzanne Collins herself called to offer a starstruck Lawrence her most hearty congratulations. âI feel like when you said yes,â the author told her, âthe world got lifted off my shoulders.â
Well, with such glowing praise from the creator herself, who are we to criticise her judgment? I look forward to Jennifer Lawrence's performance in the new flick, and hope that the elegance of the suspensefullness and addictiveness of the page-turner we all love translates smoothly onto the silver screen.
