can i just say like telling people not to smoke or drink alcohol while they’re pregnant is ableist and classist as fuck and it needs to stop
first off the majority of smokers/substance abusers are from disadvantaged and poor backgrounds or are struggling with mental health issues and they use it as a coping method so to tell them theyre a bad person for doing that is both classist and ableist
the main argument against it is that your child will come out disabled but honestly if that happens so what??? whats wrong with that??? this whole mindset has deep fucking roots in ableist thought process and im fucking sick of it. like. why do you hate people with disabilities lol
Ok let me start off by saying that I dont mean to be disrespectful when I comment on this. Next, can you safely say with statistics and background knowledge that the majority of smokers are from disadvantaged and poorer backgrounds? I attend a boarding school with a lot of wealthy students and a good percentage of them smoke. To my understanding it’s not something that is affected by social class. Secondly, smoking and alcohol abuse might be coping mechanisms for some people, but I also believe that they aren’t particularly healthy coping methods (for obvious reasons), and it would be rather selfish to not consider your child while pregnant and abusing these substances. What you claim to be your main argument might be true, but honestly why should that even be an issue? There is nothing wrong with the people that have these disablities, sure, but you’re making light of the people who have to TAKE care of and are responsible for people with these disabilities. You’re making light of the struggle that some parents have to go with taking care of children with disabilities. I want to reiterate that I DO NOT THINK that there is any wrong with people with these disabilities, nor do I hate them. I also do not think that if a parent isn’t ready to love and deal with their children with these disablities they shouldn’t be having kids, but I also do not think any parent wishes for their child to be born with a disability either. Telling someone not to smoke and drink while pregnant isn’t “abliest”, it’s concern for the health of the child.
