Headcanon me and @starsandsupernovae just came up with:

When Bucky finally moves in with the Avengers and all is good, Tony would constantly make jokes about ‘winter is coming’. Bucky, of course, was super confused by this until someone finally explained that it was a Game of Thrones. Thinking this could be a good way to connect with Tony, he watches (and loves) the entire series, and even starts the books. 

Turns out though, Tony’s never actually watched or read the series, just would make that one joke, because Sci-Fi is a million times better than fantasy to Tony. Bucky, on the other hand, is a hardcore fantasy nerd, who definitely loved Tolkien before the war and was thrilled to find out he wrote more after. So instead of bonding over GoT, they constantly argue over which is better, Sci-fi or Fantasy, except neither really has a ton of exposure to the other to have a really fair opinion about the other. 

One day, Tony points this out, saying that Bucky doesn’t know shit about Sci-fi and can’t say anything about fantasy being better. As soon as the words leave Tony’s mouth, Bucky looks at him, points to his metal arm, and says “Bitch I am Sci-Fi”. 

Tony was left speechless and everyone else in the room who was listening to the debate was pissing their pants laughing.

Bucky: Alright, there were two lookouts, but I took ‘em down. Peter: Wow, I didn’t hear a single thing. Bucky: First rule of battle, kid. Don’t ever let them know where you are. Tony: Wooo-hooo!! [deafening gunfire] I’m right here! I’m right here! You want some of this? Yeah, you do! Come on! [explosion]

A concept: When Bucky is officially okayed for the Avengers, he is prepared to be asked the hard questions by the press. Little does he know that Tony has put the fear of God into the press that if they ask him hard questions they will be slapped with a lawsuit so fast their heads will spin. So he is unprepared for one of the reporters that had asked Steve whether he really liked this time or if he wished he was back in the forties to ask him, “What’s your favorite part about being an Avenger?”

He’d planned answers for the hard questions. He draws a blank about this. So he blurts out, “Seeing Iron Man’s ass in the flight suit. It should be a national treasure.” The reporter gapes at him. The Avengers all slowly turn their heads to give him a long, blank stare. Bucky sweats.

“What,” Tony says, voice an octave higher. “Goodbye forever,” Bucky says, and back-flips off the platform.

A concept: Tony finds files that show that the Winter Soldier was supposed to kill him. He panics quietly about it for a few days before finally confronting Bucky. “Was it that you broke the programming first or Hydra just decided I wasn’t worth the effort?” he asks coldly. Bucky blinks at him before answering, “The one time I lined up a shot you bent over and I was so overcome looking at your fantastic ass that I almost fell off the roof.” “What.” “Hydra decided it wasn’t worth the risk since they figured you’d kill yourself as Iron Man.” “What.” “And to be fair I’ve always been an ass man.” “WHAT.” “Idk what to tell you man your ass is phenomenal.”

This is how you lose her. 

You lose her when you forget to remember the little things that mean the world to her: the sincerity in a stranger’s voice during a trip to the grocery, the delight of finding something lost or forgotten like a sticker from when she was five, the selflessness of a child giving a part of his meal to another, the scent of new books in the store, the surprise short but honest notes she tucks in her journal and others you could only see if you look closely.

You must remember when she forgets. 

You lose her when you don’t notice that she notices everything about you: your use of the proper punctuation that tells her continuation rather than finality, your silence when you’re about to ask a question but you think anything you’re about to say to her would be silly, your mindless humming when it is too quiet, your handwriting when you sign your name in blank sheets of paper, your muted laughter when you are trying to be polite, and more and more of what you are, which you don’t even know about yourself, because she pays attention.

She remembers when you forget. 

You lose her for every second you make her feel less and less of the  beauty that she is. When you make her feel that she is replaceable. She wants to feel cherished. When you make her feel that you are fleeting. She wants you to stay. When you make her feel inadequate. She wants to know that she is enough and she does not need to change for you, nor for anyone else because she is she and she is beautiful, kind and good.

You must learn her. 

You must know the reason why she is silent. You must trace her weakest spots. You must write to her. You must remind her that you are there. You must know how long it takes for her to give up. You must be there to hold her when she is about to. 

You must love her because many have tried and failed. And she wants to know that she is worthy to be loved, that she is worthy to be kept.

And, this is how you keep her.
