When writing always remember… a character flaw is only a flaw until becomes useful. 

Is your protagonist manipulative? Well that’s awful… until they manipulate the antagonist into making a decision that saves the lives of their friends. 

Is your protagonist a skeptic? Well that’s not good… until someone tries to lie to them. 

Is your protagonist overprotective? That sucks… until someone they love is in danger. 

Is your protagonist remorseless? Well that makes them pretty unlikeable… until a hard decision has to be made.

The flipside is also true!

Your protagonist is honest? That’s good… until their survival depends on them being able to lie convincingly.

Your protagonist is brave? That’s good… until they foolishly run headlong into danger without a thought for the consequences.

Your protagonist is forgiving and able to see good in everyone? That’s good… until they continually forgive someone who doesn’t deserve it, and get taken advantage of because they can’t fathom that some people just suck.

Your protagonist is funny? That’s good… until they piss off everyone around them because they don’t seem to be taking the situation seriously, and they keep avoiding dealing with their problems by hiding behind humor.

Most personality traits aren’t inherently good or bad. It’s all about context, and how far they go.

Random worldbuilding: there's a region in the country with a strong culture of offering homecooked dishes as gifts for all occasion. And over time, they have accumulated an entire category of dishware that aren't any particular individual's property - they are constantly in rotation, being gifted and re-gifted as the dish holding a pie, a casserole, loaf of bread, the list goes on. Once a gift dish is in your possession, you need to make something in it as a gift in return - not necessarily to the one you received it from, but to someone nonetheless.

They're called lovers' dishes, but not for any romantic reasons. The name was adopted after people started deeming the previous name, courtesan bowls, inappropriate. The term courtesan bowl was also a slightly more cleaned-up term replacing a previous one, as the dishware were originally known as slut cups. As they, you understand, they get around.

Y’all if you ever need inspiration for the background noble families of your fantasy or political or fantasy political stories I beg of thee if you can pirate the sims 4 (bc fuck ea) use the premade families, change their names to fit the story and literally just start beef between them and watch as your family tree grow and change throughout the generations as they fight to keep their family line together bc I garentee you, you will have Targaryen levels of intricate detailed backgrounds for your noble houses.

I think that if a story ever pulls a line like "You could have destroyed your magic with a stunt like that!" or "Pushing ahead with your magic too quickly can have dangerous consequences!" then the story should be obligated at some point to show me these magically disabled people.

All stories should have more disabled people, honestly, because disability is a basic part of being alive! What am I supposed to think of any given fictional community if I never see any elderly people, any retired people, any injured people, or any disabled people?

But seriously, a lot more fantasy stories specifically could really stand to show people who have been burned by magic to various degrees and are now living with the consequences. I'm too used to the protagonists fainting and sleeping extreme recklessness off without issue.

Guys you should absolutely reboot your ocs if you have them, it’s so fun

Side characters show depth by disagreeing with your main character.

Allies can want the same goal for different reasons.

Friends can be supportive while still refusing to go along with the MCs bad ideas.

Lovers can beg the MC to stay home where it's safe instead of doing the heroic thing.

Don't surround your MC with yes-men. Agreements and arguments mixed together will make your side characters feel more real.

hate hate hate the notion of "wizards = male and witches = female" it vexes me to no end. why are these two magical professions/cultures/lifestyles being equated to the binary sex system. it's so boring!!!!! AIIEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

I personally find it more fascinating if a fantasy book does it like dnd classes. Like wizards are taught how to do magic and witches have it more inherently!

Double points if they can do different types of magic and they don’t have the same strengths and weaknesses!

Bonus points if it doesn’t matter what gender you are either that decides if you’re a witch or wizard or one of the many other class types of magic class you can be

Bored again so I’m dropping some quirk about my ocs.

Theo and Harley have time blindness (Theo’s is caused by her time powers) and they have a completely different time system they made up called “THime” (yes it’s stupid, they made it up when they were kids).

If you think something took an hour when it really took about 5, that’s a Harley Hour.

If you think something took a minute when it really took 30, that’s a Theo Minute.

In other words Theo’s brother Caz is well versed in THime and doesn’t ask any time consuming tasks that have to be done soon of them. It will not get done on the deadline.

Thank youuuu, obviously this is why the book will take as long as it will to create bc of the religious aspect that is so ingrained in Theo’s story (Project Gods and Magic, hence the working title lol). But basically there is a sun god, Soleil, who is the main god they worship and a “devil figure” that gave the secondary main character his powers lol. Obviously it isn’t the devil and the god is chill (more like Hades than anything) but it doesn’t matter. Religious guilt for him!

Ok so Theo, she’s a sweet kid, loves her mom, would do anything for her- and that includes going on a mission that wakes up an eldrich god that wants to use her as her vessel to come back to earth to drain its life force and drags her boy best friend into the mess with her. Obviously she didn’t know about that god but there was definitely a lot of warning signs going “danger, danger, danger” and she ignored them anyway.

Anyway let’s talk about powers!

So a lot of maagia have something called a soul’s mark, which is basically a power that’s tied to them and them alone.

Theo’s soul’s mark is that she can see into the past, while seers can see into the future and give cryptic prophecies about what’s gonna happen at any given time; Theo’s powers are triggered by intense emotional responses, objects that held a lot of energy from the past, and random thoughts that can trigger it. She at first hates this power bc she thinks it’s useless at best, could get her killed at worst until she learns to control it!

Another girl who doesn’t love her power is Aiyana who can heal whatever she touches. Which you might be thinking “that’s a great power!” But she’s also been raised as a warrior more than a healer, she thinks healing isn’t as important as being on the front lines but she later learns that she can be both. Tho she doesn’t learn that yet, when we first meet her she has these big boxing gloves like Vi had in arcane so she can punch someone and not heal something inside them.

Pls ask me more about these characters’ powers they’re amazing (to me anyway lol)!

Second :I can't do anything but strongly support that choice of power for a protag ! The lore and world building will be brought up so smoothly with this, how I envy you 😭😭 A pre-estblished reason for flash back is like the Grail of writer working with rich chronology!

I don’t want to give away too much where I live but all I’m gonna say is that I live right next to a heavily wooded area in a rural area. You basically always have some sort of sounds of wildlife and nature, birds, and the distant sounds of horses and cows. But in autumn? When winter begins to show its face and steal away the summer heat, so to does it steal the sounds of wildlife and nature. There isn’t a sound at all in the forest except for the low sound of wind blowing through the swaying trees, even the dogs stop barking as much and all your left with is an oppressive quiet. It’s so quiet that you feel you have to be quiet as well, as if you’re afraid you’ll wake something up that you don’t want to be awake.

So obviously this was my greatest inspiration for Leroi Falls, the primary town where my story takes place. 😊
