My fault for sending this out without making my joke clear, but in my original post my intentions were fully "brandon took the only darkeyed character still angry about the very real ways darkeyes are oppressed and killed for being darkeyed and turned him into a character the readers are supposed to villainize as a hateful evil man which also furthers the way the last two books turn away from oathbringer's theming of the nuance of the war into something where well all the fused and higher ups on the odium side just love killing innocents so obviously we have to keep killing the average singer who just wants freedom from human oppression. Ignore how bad these politics look and ignore the questions the first three books posed"

*sigh* so I've been seeing some earnest posts that are like actually this character really is someone's tien- no, NO
no light-eyed character in a position of power is anyone's tien because kaladin's statement fundamentally misunderstands why tien died. when kaladin says "the king was Dalinar's tien" he takes "tien" to mean someone who is a liability to the safety and success of those around them and yet is personally important to someone. but this is BULLSHIT. because tien wasn't randomly a liability, he wasn't given training because he was part of a racist SYSTEM that viewed dark-eyed lives as disposable. tien didn't do shit. he died for just existing. elhokar isn't just existing, he abused his power. tien had no power. this issue is SYSTEMIC, and the comparison is BULLSHIT.

something that is really starting to bug me is the fanon that the other kids/Berk as a whole didn't respect or admire Hiccup until after he and Toothless killed the Red Death
this is. so fucking wrong, my friends. We see that this is objectively not true in the actual plot of the actual movie. The other kids and adults become obsessed with him during dragon training. They don't realize what's happening, but they are correctly recognizing his innovation and astonishing results. And while the adults side with Stoick when the dragon secret gets out, the kids don't. It's not about the Red Death to them; Hiccup has already won their loyalty. They volunteer because they respect and admire him and the whole finale just shows that he deserves it. (And the adults switch back to respect and admiration when they do fully understand the situation again later)
He earned it with his performance in dragon training, but he doesn't think he did because there was so much deception involved. But that doesn't undo that he was actually generating so much knowledge that becomes incredibly useful to his people. AND THEN he saves them all from dying! It's not "oh they respect him now because he almost died for them." It's so much more than that
(this is one of the reasons I absolutely can't fucking stand RoB/DoB. Instead of these kids looking to Hiccup as the leader of their group, enjoying his company, and admiring him, they...are all replaced by cartoon stereotypes that are infinitely less nuanced and interesting than their httyd1/boneknapper/gotnf selves and are so fucking mean to each other and Hiccup)
I wish they explored the relationship between Snotlout and Gustav more. The way the riders (and Hiccup in particular) treated him was rlly shitty. Shouldn’t you know what it feels like to be the village pariah? Snotlout definetly should

The job they gave you was a completely pointless and needlessly dangerous endeavor bc no one gave a shit about you. They all hate your ass. The worst social crime someone can commit is being annoying and you're both so fucking annoying
The Berserker episode kinda pointed to those parallels with Snotlout being overjoyed to get Gustavs award because he yearns so deeply for approval that he'll take a fake feel good award away from a child but that's kinda it
Let Snotlout harbour resentment towards Gustav because he sees himself In him. Let him try to fix Gustav as a proxy for working on himself. Let them have a deeply awkward heart-to-heart. Idk man just give me something

Oooooo well right now what I've been thinking about is how some Cosmere fic authors have been getting down on themselves for low community engagement on their fics. I've talked about it here, but the tldr is that the entire community shrank after Wind and Truth came out, and this year has been particularly bad. Friends of mine noticed it in 2025 when we didn't get the big bump in fans we expected, and in 2026 reader engagement has contracted even more.
(Please note I multiplied fics published by 1000 so it appears on the graph, hahah. Words published is measured on the left side; everything else is measured on the right side)
I would argue that the amount of engagement is tracking nicely alongside number of words published, except for 2026. Proportionally, the amount of effort required (number of words) to get a hit, kudos, or comment quadrupled this year compared to the average.
So obviously I would love to gather in fans who are interested in reading Cosmere fanfic again, or maybe even for the first time. I'm always a "create the world you want to live in" kind of person so I've been going around, following people on Instagram and joining Discord servers and talking about fic, seeing if I can find people who might be interested. I have my pinned post that asks people to send me asks for fic recs. I occasionally even venture into Cosmere Reddit to talk about fic, and I have found people that way!
So I guess what I would want to change, is for those in Cosmere circles who want more fic readers but aren't doing these things yet, to try:
Reblogging posts about Cosmere fanfic
Making posts about your favourite fics
Tagging your friends on posts about topics that might interest them
Try not to be discouraged about lack of engagement. We just have a smaller community right now, and we're doing our best to support each other.
And of course, make some room in your day to read a little fic and leave a comment! It means a world of difference, especially right now.

Actually you SHOULD make problematic content. You SHOULD explore dark or taboo topics. You SHOULD have a space where you can cope with your traumas or explore sensitive topics in a way that doesn't hurt anyone.
Also you should make problematic content for funsies. You don't need to have had trauma or need to be coping in order to explore dark creativity. You can just be a human who wants to explore dark and taboo topics because you want to. That's completely normal, btw.
Every single person on this planet thinks about dark and taboo things. It's literally the most normal thing in the world.

Imagine, for a moment, that your internet just stopped loading images one day. Your dash might look pretty different (and less usable), but at least you can still make posts — whether about your internet situation, or about completely unrelated topics.
Now, imagine that one or more of your posts blew up, to the tune of hundreds if not thousands of notes. Imagine people started adding images to your posts.
Imagine your post circulating almost entirely in the form with four or five images attached, and with everyone in the notes laughing about those images — except you, who started the post in the first place, who can't even see those images because you're trapped in Tumblr's loading gradient hellscape.
You're excluded from any further conversations on your own post, because someone added a mystery image with the caption "don't leave this in the tags," but you have no idea which set of tags it is, and can't tell if it's one of the good takes from the tags or one of the horrible takes from the tags. You're excluded from the Tumblr users playing with JPEGs like dolls. You can try to guess the contents of the images based on people's reactions, but it's hard. And no one adding images even seems to notice the irony.
This is, of course, a real problem plaguing Tumblr users with regularly slow internet. And it's also a huge, insidious problem plaguing blind and low vision people who rely on either screen readers, or image descriptions in combination with enlarged text on their device.
People with disabilities around comprehending images, people who have images (or gifs) disabled due to photosensitivity, and many others are also affected.
If you add an image to a post without either alt text, an in-post image description, or even both for maximal inclusivity, you don't know if OP — or the person whose tags you're peer reviewing, or whose reply you're screenshotting — will actually be able to see it. From their perspective, you might just be shoving a mystery rectangle in their face, expecting them to be able to guess — or responding to them without them being able to know.
Imagine being on the receiving end of that expectation constantly. Imagine how isolating that must feel.
We need, collectively, to stop making assumptions that everyone we interact with online will be able to access, physically see, and mentally process images. The assumption that disabled people are vanishingly rare and statistically shouldn't really need to be considered is an assumption of structural and/or implicit ableism.
Write image descriptions. Write image descriptions for every image you post, if you're able — but if you have limited energy, or you're still learning, you should at least start trying your absolute best to describe images you add to other people's posts. If you're starting a conversation, even an online conversation, you should make your best effort to be accessible.
So: Write IDs, especially if they're as simple as just text, like screenshotted tags (link to guide). Write IDs even if you think the best ID you can write is too short, or too incomplete (link to post explaining why even "bad" IDs help).
Write IDs in general (link to a huge compilation of guides). Challenge ableist assumptions and inaccessibility.
