Because I feel like kids of color don’t hear it enough: domestic abuse is not a part of your culture. 

A lot of us were raised with the idea that “its normal for wives/children to get hit! it helps them learn– only white folk don’t get beaten when they misbehave”. That’s not true, white people aren’t the only ones who deserve a safe and abuse free environment. Black and brown people can and do have loving families. 

If you’re in a situation where you are enduring abuse and people use your culture to justify it, I want you to know that what they’re telling you are lies.

The idea that nonwhite cultures are somehow based on abuse is so prevalent that my mandatory reporting abuse seminar had an entire section in it about how this is bullshit and we shouldn’t ignore abused indigenous kids.

There’s a difference between writer’s block and being burnt out.  

If you’re experiencing writer’s block, you’re probably frustrated with your inability to get something down on the page. Maybe you’re stuck on a plot point. Maybe you have an idea in your head and you can’t figure out the right words. You want to be writing, but you’re having a problem with some part of the process that gets the words out. 

If you’re experiencing burnout, you’re more likely feeling like writing is futile. What’s the point of writing anyway? Nobody cares. No one’s going to read it. Your writing sucks and you’re not getting any better. You’ll never be as popular as that other writer over there. You might as well just give up. 

It’s important to pay attention to yourself and how you’re feeling so that you know which one is which. If you don’t know what your problem is, you won’t be able to fix it.

This is gonna be one of those posts I need a place to put that isn't facebook. Today I saw a post of an Indiginous woman wishing she wasn't brown. She turned her life to(brown) Jesus and through God she had been saved. She acknlowedged Racism is real and that all cops weren't the issue. As a Native individual myself, reading this naturally broke my heart. I can't love God or Jesus. Their names have been used to Justify too many atrocities against Black and Brown people. I wish I could throw myself into the arms of a comforting God but I really just can't trust him like that.
