I love how the Elder Scrolls series had a race of hive-minded steampunk elves that were so aggressively anti-theistic that they built a synthetic god to act as an existential negative integer to all creation just to test the hypothesis that it could be cancelled out. But upon powering this synthetic god on, the inherent illogic and irrationality of apotheosis spread through the hive-mind like an atomic blast wave, and these elves who based their entire worldview in logic and rationality could no longer justify their own existence, and so they cancelled themselves out of the universal equation, in part proving their hypothesis in the process.

My favorite thing about this franchise is that this deep lore take coexist with "The Dwarves were smote for the hubristic folly of trying to build God" and "The Dwarves' superweapon backfired and killed them" within the text of the game and franchise. The competing perspectives on historical events and the biases and interpretation is just That Good Fantasy Bullshit

My Argonian OC, Kel-Ma, is the Champion of Cyrodiil and the latest Mantle of Sheogorath. Things I like about her:

She's a butch lesbian and had a cool Dunmer girlfriend (who was previously my Nerevarine)

She's a colorful lizard who has pretty jewel-tone gradients on her scales and fins instead of horns

She is very compassionate, and used her winnings from being Grand Champion at the Arena to help donate to charitable causes and beggars

She is an excellent thief, but did not complete the Thieves' Guild because she prefers not to pledge allegiance to organizations

Things I don't like about her:

My insistence to make her date my Nerevarine caused an EXTREMELY complicated backstory set-up that was a huge pain to write

I originally wanted her to be a Dark Brotherhood assassin like she was in my first playthrough, but I realized it didn't work with my characterization and I had to retcon that aspect of her story 💀

Her being Sheogorath has caused a major Doomed Yuri timeline, cause ain't no way is her gf staying with the Mad God

Babygirl wears insanely complicated outfits like Adam Adamowicz's concept art of Sheo and drawing that suuuuucks (it's been a while since I have)

what's gonna happen if you start TES worldbuilding is you're gonna go, ok, how can I justify Oblivion alchemist OCs carrying around, like, 3 huge pieces of glassware. you can say "it doesn't break because it's magic glass" and move on with your life OR you can spend an hour or two in an internet hole that started with the wikipedia page for "Tempered Glass" and ends with some academic paper on Iron Age manufacturing. then you gotta head on over to refresh yourself on alteration magic and its uses so you can imagine this little unnamed glazier at the Arcane University who developed a technique for making sturdy and reliable alembics for the adventurous alchemist and boom, you've done some worldbuilding.

but when you go to put it in your story you don't really want to derail the narrative with a whole paragraph-long aside about all this shit, so you distill it down to one explanatory line. for example: "it doesn't break because it's magic glass."
