On This Day In History
May 13th, 1989: 300,000 Chinese students mobilize in Tiananmen Square for hunger strikes. The Tiananmen Square protests were from April 15th to June 4th, 1989.
I might just cried and screamed a little.

The fact that these people are voiced by the same person blows my mind
wait, love ur space knowledge, now i have a moon query. u said earth's moon is proportionally the hugest but isn't charon like half the size of pluto? which i know is technically a dwarf planet but she's very dear to me so what's the deal with that? thank u
yeah Charon really isn't a moon proper because it's not actually orbiting Pluto, they're orbiting each other!
this means that Pluto and Charon are actually a paired system of orbiting bodies and not a standard planet-moon-system at all, and this is a major reason why Pluto was disqualified from being a planet proper in the first place!
this double-orbit is also a major reason why Pluto's orbit around the Sun is just so unbelievably fucked up.
which, again, is another reason why Pluto got kicked off of the Planets table and had to go sit with Planetoids and Dwarf Planets at the kiddy table.
(thanks a lot, Charon.)
uhhh but yeah basically these two idiot rocks are just holding hands and screaming while they cartwheel wildly through the outer solar system and it's pretty hilarious actually

“China produces more rainbow flags than anyone. My nightmare is there is a factory with nearly slave labor, forced to live within the factory complex and get up every morning and have to churn out more and more rainbow tchotchkes.” He says he didn’t create the rainbow flag in order for others to profit off of “rainbow junk”.
He is horrified by some of the things he has seen. He says, “Walking down Castro Street, I can’t pay my rent, but I see rainbow dildos in the shop windows and rainbow keychains, rainbow rings, rainbow candles and so on.” He said it is similar to when the best music ends up as elevator music. He is gratified that the power of the rainbow caught on as rings, but that power can be diluted by over-commercialization.”

why do black people use you in the wrong context? such is "you ugly" instead of "you're ugly" I know u guys can differentiate, it's a nuisance
you a bitch
It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.
So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.
What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.
In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.
This is the most intellectual drag I’ve ever read.

Greg: See? My childhood wasn’t great either! I couldn’t do anything I liked.
Steven: None of my peers can really relate to me, I have literally no legal documents, and I’ve nearly been maimed or killed countless times. But thanks dad.
some of y’all are out here trying to make greg out to be this “abusive, manipulative” father who never actually cared about his family... even though this post is years old by now, i’m not fucking here for that noise, ‘cuz no, i can already tell some of u guys are a) kids, and b) people who did not watch the episode and understand it.
greg has no excuse. even if he’s half-diamond [or half-gem] and he doesn’t necessarily have to deal with vaccines, there’s no excuse for not taking him to the doctor. there’s not an excuse for not giving him proper schooling, financial stability, a proper food diet [this does not have anything to do with steven’s weight or appearance i’m talking about giving your kid a healthy balance of food as they grow up], and even if he was there for his son, he didn’t give him a stable home. steven may have had a house to live in, but the gems didn’t FEED him. they didn’t understand human needs and necessities, so he was left to figure it out himself. not every kid is matilda [in fact the whole point of that book is partly a cautionary tale how she wasn’t raised by the people who were supposed to care for and love her in the first place]. plus, we already had an episode where connie’s mom told him about all the blunt-force/psychological trauma he’s endured through the years.
i imagine that though the gems may have had money, and garnet was a good person to talk to, they didn’t TRULY understand him. so again, he a) faced multiple, multiple instances of life-threatening danger, and b) wasn’t fed or taken to the doctor, greg [and, fucking,,,, the gems] dropped the damn ball. they threw that shit on the ground. being that they were on earth and had the chance to learn more about human needs, and how greg had other parents around him to learn from, possibly,
there’s no excuse for that shit.
so i can see where steven has a problem empathizing with his dad, because being ruled as the lowest in power or in value by human parents does seem a bit different from being ruled as the lowest in power or in value by... diamond... parents.
ok. here’s where my problem with steven lies.
steven was also kind of a selfish asshole in this episode. like, i totally get it. i’d have an issue empathizing with my dad after i just figured out that at the expense of his [we’ll get back on that], i could probably have a childhood where i didn’t face any trauma.
but when your dad tries to open up to you and it’s just not the time, either you do your best and tough it out and try to understand him, or say, dad, we need to turn around because i can’t talk to you about this just right now.
when your dad tries to get you to understand that his parents too were controlling, you don’t use your mom’s life situation to outvalue his - because though they were on different scales of awful, and not particularly proportionate, you can’t use your mom being mentally, emotionally, and physically abused as a sort of ‘you didn’t have it bad at all’ case against your father when he tries to open up to you about the negative aspects of his life, because a) no matter how bad rose was, that’s disrespectful as fuck. that’s not okay to talk to your father that way, and i can’t imagine a lot of abuse victims can be okay with their trauma being used as an argument like that.
so i want to clarify - the conflict in this episode isn’t happening because steven was an asshole.
it’s because this is the wrong fucking time to open up about that, greg. read the room. your son just learned his childhood could have been a lot better given the circumstances, and thanks to you, and his other primary caretakers, he faced a lot of instability and trauma, so he can’t really [symp/emp]athize with you right now.. especially after finding out all the pain his mom caused, on the other hand. we’ve already been through rose, we don’t need to go any more in depth.
so greg and rose aren’t very good parents.
i feel like garnet and pearl were... slightly better or worse, however you see it, but the bar is low.
edit: let’s not forget how the only other kid steven met was connie! :#
