i like to complain about this series a lot more than praise it. i find warriors really fun to pull apart, i think it's awful and deserves every nitpick it gets.

please avoid personal anecdotes. i understand sometimes discussions on here veer into personal territory but i am a stranger and i don't always know how to handle responding to that.

it takes me a bit to post some asks. the longer it is, the longer it'll take me to get to it.

i might not respond at all if i don't want to deal with potential discourse and/or i just don't know how to reply to it.

sometimes this blog veers into topics outside of battle cats/xenofiction, i don't really want to discuss general discourse if i don't have to. i do not want to argue about online lgbt+ discourse, that's exhausting.

you can disagree with me, i like to hear other people's opinions. but don't be nasty about it, that's a one way ticket to get yourself booted from here. i love discussions, not people trying to rag on one another.

here are some stories i have going going that i love to talk about:

#honey's horrible time - A work-in-progress story about a human being who is killed and reincarnated into a warrior cats rip-off series where she possesses the body of one of the minor antagonists in the book. All information on this story is available in this masterlist.

#poolverse - An nextgen AU revolving around an alternate AVOS cast. It's set in the aftermath of a very different OotS where the Clans decide to abolish the borders and attempt to live peacefully...to mixed results. This is a soft reboot of my older "new generation au"!

#fallen stars au - An alternate universe for The Darkest Hour in which Firestar must flee the forest with friends. All information on the story + archived art from the former ask blog can be found here.

#ask bean - my wc oc named bean who becomes the clan's mediator after the events of squirrelflight's hope. i used to run an ask blog for her but i didn't have the energy to maintain it. you can see the old asks here.

Preemptively covering my ass by saying I know Rain World’s unpredictability and RNG is intentionally unfair and luck-based, I understand it is part of the atmosphere and gameplay style they wanted to build in simulating a real environment. I respect it wholly, I just don’t vibe with it on a personal taste level. I like the idea of being able to get better and smarter, rather than hoping the next room won’t be filled with five billion lizards this time.

Hey. Hey. If you're still interested in webcomic recommendations, may I recommend Murk? It isn't cats but it IS about dinosaurs(specially Dineobellator, which are close relatives of Velociraptors(same subfamily)!). It has a lovely painted style and I'm super invested in the story so far! Obligatory TWs though for cannibalism, gore(in the sense of carcasses being consumed) and (dinosaur) child/infant death.

And if you like Murk, Arax takes place in the same universe and is about a Yutyrannus who lives with a group of Sinosauropteryx. It's much more light imo, but it's still absolutely heartbreaking, especially with the newest updates!

Both are very slow to update, but I think they're worth the wait personally.

Other recommendations: Follow Your Heart(Warriors fancomic. Warning as it deals with subjects of grooming and csa), The False Sun(originally a WC fan story, but now its own thing!) and The Average Adventures of Genericpaw/Genericheart (A Warriors parody that's surprisingly good!)

All of them are on Comicfury!

Also idk if you take game recommendations, but may I present to you: Rain World? It seems like a pretty simple survival game where you play as a creature at the bottom of the food chain, but if you care to seek out the lore and play all the different campaigns then it's truly a very deep story. It's a very difficult game, but absolutely worth it!

Oooh, I’ll check it out! I haven’t really read many Dino webcomics, I should change that. The False Sun too, add that to my list.

I’ve read Follow Your Heart and the Adventures of Genericpaw, and found them enjoyable in some aspects but ultimately nothing that really stuck with me. I’d be willing to give them another go though.

As for Rain World, yes! I have played it! I actually don’t mind difficult games (Silksong and Elden Ring enjoyer), but it definitely is one I have to be in the mood for. Unlike the prior examples where you can feasibly learn attack patterns and improve, Rain World feels a bit more… luck oriented. Which is not bad! Just not my cup of tea all the time.

i think the black tyrant's main issue, pacing aside, is that it has a lot to say but is so heavy-handed in doing so that it starts to come across as kind of juvenile. that isn't a crime or anything but it is something i'd like to see changed and improved on if/when the author redoes it

i think the comic has a lot of ambitious ideas and big emotional moments, but it falls into a writing trap i struggle with too: wanting to get to the “good stuff” before laying enough groundwork. which is why we immediately get sundance's full backstory laid out for us instead of getting to piece it together ourselves as the story progresses, or waiting until we understand sundance better as a character before rewinding so far back in time.

i think the pacing would improve immensely if it slowed down and let the characters’ interactions and dynamics communicate the worldbuilding and values naturally, instead of having characters directly spell them out to the audience every time. the antagonists range from decent to fairly bland, and most of the villains feel pretty one-note. the side characters also didn’t leave much of an impression on me personally. sundance is fine as a protagonist, but i think the story focuses so heavily on his suffering that we rarely get to know him outside of his absolute lowest moments. that issue is made even more noticeable by the fact that the current bulk of the comic is devoted to his backstory, where he’s already at rock bottom. 

in the last author note, the author states they are planning to remake the comic and release a physical edition. personally, i don’t really have much interest in keeping up with it. if you’re looking for an “adult” warriors comic that focuses heavily on themes like transphobia, misogyny, sexual assault, and similar topics, it might still be worth checking out. i’m pretty on the fence about recommending it overall, though. the setting itself is really cool though.

It's not finished, probably never will be and I have mixed feelings on it but it might be interesting. The first chapter or so has beautiful art and I'm genuinely impressed that the creator kept up the detail for as long as they did.

Be warned it does deal with some pretty heavy topics.

sexual assault discussion

if misogyny in this world is so deeply entrenched that the group explicitly codifies gender roles, and the opening conflict for the protagonist is essentially “submit to sexual assault or die,” then these panels makes absolutely no sense. rainbowtail would have had plenty of other cats coming to her for abortions. you could argue that no one’s ever directly asked her before, but sundance openly admits he doesn’t want kittens directly to her, so there’s no reason to assume other cats wouldn’t have approached her about terminating pregnancies too.

could be a character writing choice, could be me reading way too into this line. just my initial confusion over it.
