people are hanging out on the train tracks that u usually hang out on. Do you ask to join the large group which seems more fun, join the singular person for a more intimate connection, or does your social anxiety force you to just go home
Once, I encountered the funny story of an AI image descriptor with a sheep obsession. It had been trained on pictures of fields of sheep. Therefore, it tagged anything in a field as 'sheep', including an empty field, because they work on statistical probability. Therefore, it thinks "ah, a field! there's probably a sheep here." (It's a bit more complicated but basically that.) It also couldn't recognise sheep in places that weren't fields, such as petrol stations or barns. [cont]
Now, the alarming aspect of this story is that the very same technology is probably what tumblr is using to identify porn. Now, if it canāt tell that an empty field is not, in fact, full of sheep, what hope do we have that it canāt tell an empty room isnāt full of writing human forms engaged in passionate coitus?
this really does sound like an episode of black mirror
ā¦. oh my fucking god they actually are using open source software. Theyāre using a fucking one-layer unidirectional bicategory tag-trained neural network. This will never work. Literally, it will never work. Thereās just not enough algorithmic complexity to do what theyāre asking of it. I bet you I could prove on a mathematical level that this joke of a neural net fundamentally lacks the abstraction necessary to do its job.
This will never get better. Their algorithm will never stop fucking up, it will never actually flag porn reliably and it will always require a massive quantity of human hours to deal with the deluge of mistagged pictures. This isnāt just a case of an insufficiently trained algorithm, itās just ⦠this is the most basic neural network you can make. It probably hasa a lot of neurons and has loads of training data but like ⦠you canāt just brute force this kind of stuff. One layer of neurons is just Not Enough.
Also, just to make this clear, Tumblr lied. I mean, we already know this, but I mean they liiiieeeeed. All that stuff they promised about what would or would not be censored? That cannot be delivered on with a system this simple. Nude classical sculptures, political protests, male-presenting nipples (really Tumblr?), nude art outside the context of sex, all that? You cannot train a bicategory one-layer neural network to exclude those things. It cannot be done. Tumblr never intended for those things to actually be permitted, they were just lying. Because the system they have cannot actually do what they said it would and never will be able to.
Also, this kind of system is super vulnerable to counter-neural strategies. I bet you before the end of the month someone hooks up their own open source one layer bicategory neural network which puts an imperceptible (to humans) layer of patterned static over arbitrary images, and trains it by having it bot-post static-ed images to Tumblr and reinforcing based on whether the images are labeled nsfw or sfw. Seriously, within a month someone will have an input-output machine which can turn any image āsfwā in Tumblrās eyes.
This is genuinely pathetic. Like, I have real pity for whoever implemented this, because itās clear Tumblr doesnāt actually have any engineers with any expertise with machine learning left at all and they foisted the job off on some poor bastard who has no idea what theyāre doing and is going to get all kinds of flak for their (perfectly reasonable and predetermined) failure from management.
@crazy-pages, can you link me to the software? Iām curious about what stack theyāre using, as a Data Scientist myself. When you sayĀ āopen source softwareā I hope youāre no talking about Tensorflow or Pytorch or the like, because thatās fineā¦if their specific script and model are public, thoughā¦
It gets even worse. It will not require hundreds of man-hours to deal with the backlog.
Because the review team is another net, and Iād bet cash money itās another copy of the same software.
That imperceptible static trick? I did basically that. Both copies got flagged by the initial censorbot.
One copy, the less justifiable one by tumblrās stated rules, was approved. The other was not.
Someone pointed me to another blog - I forget the name - that posts the same picture every day, and was getting similar results. Inconsistency in both flags and reviews.
And thatās never going to get better either.
But the pornbots have learned to use non-sexual keywords and tag #sfw already, so thereās that.
Okay so the other day I was taking the trash out and my nail caught on a spider egg sac!
Unfortunately it split open and all the little eggs came tumbling out and luckily landed in a box.
After getting them all in a glass, I was left with several questions, no answers and guilt! But I asked in a few spider groups and got a tutorial on making a spider incubator!
Sooo! We went through a few different stages of mini Orbeez
And by mini I mean REALLY mini!
But finally we started seeing development!
See the little white dot?! Thatās a wee lil baby!
Then more started showing up!
Then the day came!! Little legs started showing up!!
lads i was really just going about my life today and i came into my genetics lecture and my professor put both hands on the podium and explained to our suddenly silent 200+ person lecture hall that a chinese scientist has just created the worldās first GMO babies by taking human embryos and modifying them to be resistant to HIV. there are two of them and theyāre twins. apparently we donāt know yet if itās successful but it was at a conference where a ton of GMO researchers were discussing if genetic modification of humans should be allowed and if so to what extent and apparently this dude got the microphone and saidĀ āive already done itā and showed some data (apparently not a lot though) and thereās a ton of drama happening right now because āwhat the FUCK do you MEAN you already did it????? what the FUCK dude?????ā. my professor kept saying to us with complete sincerity āthis is important, this is really, really importantāĀ and anyway i justā¦ā¦.what a time to be alive, you know?
like i dont feel comfortable taking a stance on any of this without more information but i do know for certain that god, i wish i could have witnessed that room of GMO researchers when this dude got the mic and was really likeĀ āi have modified human embryosāĀ

Hey! Iām a scientist who works with gene editing and can def give you more context on the gmo babies! tldr itās unethical and Not Great, but basically thereās been an (unenforceable) international moratorium on gene editing humans since 2015. Itās maybe illegal, maybe just advised against in China. The university, hospital, and government are all denying knowledge of it tho, which makes this super shady. (1/?)
Hereās the thing: gene editing has been used in therapy in humans, but 1. patients give full consent and 2. cells are removed from the body, CHECKED, double-checked, then put back in, because gene editing can have off-target effects and we want to avoid those, and 3. only cells that canāt be inherited are edited, so that an individual is only giving consent to alter their own body, not their children and/or the general gene population. NONE OF THOSE THREE HAPPENED IN THIS CASE. (2/?)
Itās extremely unclear if the parents knew what was happening, other than that the dad was HIV+ and the research was supposed to prevent the kids from getting HIV. (There are a LOT of cheaper and more accessible ways to do this than gene editing). So far, the scientist hasnāt proven that he checked for (or prevented) off target effects - but we do know one of the kids is a mosaic, meaning only SOME of her cells were altered. This could be really bad for her health, we literally donāt know (3/?)
This guy waited until he had produced human beings to make his announcement, didnāt consult the public, other scientists, or regulatory boards, and sprung the announcement RIGHT before the human gene editing conference - which signals that he did this for his own sake, not for science. Heās set a dangerous precedent and potentially damaged the public perception of gene editing, not to mention endangering those children (the edit made them more susceptible to West Nile). So. Fuck that guy. (4/4)
ā¦ā¦š
this isā¦quite literally the wildest shit like i understand the incredible temptation to try something just to see if it could be done, every scientist understands that, but holy shit dude what the fuck?Ā
idk this has a LOT happening and im not gonna be able to address all of it but my thoughts right off the bat: current gene editing (see: modifying someoneās existing genome. different from this case because in gene editing, the person is born and is displaying symptoms of a genetic disease, where here the embryos are being modified before birth) is pretty life changing and very safe and effective from my understanding of it and what iāve been taught, and it makes me angrier knowing that this might set back that kind of science thatās more ethical in terms of consent. i also donāt like that the lives of these kids are gonna be inherently controversial. i also donāt likeā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦uhā¦..almost all of this, actually. like this is A Lot, holy shit.Ā
Holiday, who throughout her career called public attention to the devastating impact of white supremacy, drew the notice of the Commissioner for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. He ordered her to stop singing the song...
ā¦In the end, Billie Holidayās insistence on performing āStrange Fruitā may have been responsible for her demise.
One of the primary attempts to silence her came from a man named Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, and an extreme racist, even for the 1930s. As Johann Hari details in Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, Anslinger claimed that narcotics made black people forget their place in the fabric of American society, and that jazz musicians were dangerous in particular, creating āSatanicā music under the influence of marijuana.
Holiday, who throughout her career called public attention to the devastating impact of white supremacy, was also a drug user. Ā She drew Anslingerās notice, and he ordered Holiday to cease performing the song. Holiday refused, and Anslinger ramped up his efforts to silence her.
After one of Anslingerās men was paid to track Holiday and frame her with buying and using heroin, she spent eighteen months in prison. Upon her release in 1948, the federal government refused to renew her cabaret performerās license, mandatory for any performer playing or singing at any club or bar serving alcohol.
This utterly undermined her career. Although Holiday was able to perform multiple sold-out Carnegie Hall performances over the next several years, she could no longer travel the nightclub circuit.
Unable to perform regularly at the venues she loved, and to stop remembering a childhood that included being raped at age ten, and working in a brothel with her mother, Holiday eventually began using heroin again. Ā When she checked into a New York hospital in 1959, her liver was failing and cancerous. She was emaciated, and her heart and lungs were compromised. Despite her condition, she didnāt want to stay there. āTheyāre going to kill me. Theyāre going to kill me in there. Donāt let them,ā she presciently told friends and family.
Indeed, Anslingerās men, sensing a macabre opportunity, showed up at her hospital bedside, handcuffed her to the bed, took mugshots, removed giftsthat people had brought to the roomāflowers, radio, record player, chocolates, magazinesāand stationed two cops at the door.
Even so, as doctors began methadone treatment, Holiday began to improve, gaining some weight and improving slowly. But then Anslingerās men prevented hospital staff from administering any further methadone. She succumbed to death within days.
The only surviving filmed version of Holiday performing the song is from the British cabaret television show, āChelsea At Nine,ā recorded February 25, 1959 and released in March of the same year, just a few months before she died. Her voice is strong and impressive; the raw emotion simply devastating.
From their infancy in the US, drug laws and enforcement have been about controlling and murdering Black people.Ā
