taking out my little whiteboard marker and drawing a direct line from kieran's flower card "yellow rainflower—my heart's betrayal" to the LOS mark and kieran exchange of "There is nothing wrong with your heart" / "That cannot be true [...] For you were my heart" . turning around and pointing at it sobbing and sniffling actually

i forgot posting shit at midnight means no one sees…
imagine being 15 (terrible) and you live in a basement and are only allowed outside every once in a while under strict conditions (isolating) and then you watch your father get literally torn apart by demons (traumatizing) and then a bunch of strangers inform you that you are genetically one of those cultlike child soldiers that your dad always warned you about (migraine inducing) so now you have to go to their weird house in the middle of nowhere and live with the other child soldiers (frightening) and then the brain short circuitingly attractive guy who held you at knifepoint keeps sleeping outside your door and he and his sister keep following you everywhere (SCREAM???) and then some college aged guy shows up while you're collecting stuff to sell when you run away and announces that not only are you a child soldier but your ancestors were like famous and he's basically jesus and also your only living blood relative, and then busts you for stealing and gives you a therapy speech about how you shouldn't throw your life away (HUH???????) and then a bunch of annoying bigots come into the house and keep yapping at you about their shitty ideology (migraine inducing part 2) and also the government is falling apart, you're having your bisexual awakening at a REALLY inconvenient time, there's some guy committing heinous crimes against nature to raise his girlfriend from the dead but then he dies and turns into a demon magnet, you get multiple concussions, and a bunch of strange arcane mystical figures keep ominously trying to figure out why you look familiar (WTF)

Hi again :) I’ve seen a lot of shadowhunters fans say that TMI is Clare’s worst work If you compare it to TID, TLH, and TDA. Imo it’s not really about TMI itself, but more about the fact that her writing in general isn’t good, and that’s not something limited to TMI. It’s true that in the first three books the writing feels shakier, but in the last three I think Clare finds her rhythm and maintains a style similar to her other works. It doesn’t really change that much, so I don’t see why it should be considered the worst thing she’s written. What do you think?
Now that I think about it, it's of course quite relative. Bad writing is definitely not limited to TMI alone. I read City of Fallen Angels and Chain of Gold consecutively, and that experience only underlined the fact that Clare definitely had established her writing style long time ago because essentially nothing had changed in 10 or so years between those books. But the transition in style, from the first half of TMI to Clare’s later works, is clearly visible in CoHF especially.
Structurally TDA and TLH were horrible messes. The character casts were too large and the books too long and otherwise unfocused. TID is overly praised, and I don’t know where the praise really comes from. It has a bit differing style because Clare imitates old-fashioned vibes, but it is generally the same in quality I think. On the other hand, it is overall clearer and the plot more coherent and not as disjointed and afterthought as TMI, which is a plus. The cast of characters is more limited and the story is therefore more controlled. Also a plus.
As to TMI, City of Bones is a bad book in every way. In writing, style, plot, and content. It takes away quite a lot of points. I’d say it is the worst as a single book. City of Fallen Angels is a close second and its issues are manifold—some might say seven—but the writing style is more cohesive and solid although still absolutely terrible. City of Bones is so all over the place and plain bad that nothing holds a candle to it in that regard. So these works are two big minuses alone.
I agree that in the three first books of TMI the writing is definitely shakier than in the rest of Clare’s works. In some ways, I might agree that they are her worst books in comparison with her later production. But at the same time, we need to think about what standards we use to judge their quality. I think all the series are bad, but in their own unique ways since my problems with those books are very different. :’D
I personally think TLH is the worst though. It does some things better than the other series, is definitely more mindful than TMI which is evidently a product of its time, but TLH was generally such a mess that I can’t get over how bad it was.
chain of thorns scenes that rant free in my head 3/3
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS? I just wanted to see my pre-order of BiB on Amazon and they have updated their page with this new image:
Am I late or no one's actually talking about it????
also, i think its so fun to read cristina and mark so confused and out of their depth while kieran is like:
Radfems and TERFs are always like "I'm a feminist!! That's why I think women are weaker than men and also should never express sexual desire I disagree with and also I hate any expression of femininity in men and masculinity in women and think all men(and anyone I think is a man) are violent monstrous predators that women need to be separated from for their own protection." and it's like. You are a conservative. You are a fucking republican. Oh my god. You wouldn't know feminist if it walked up and punched you right in the face.
ok we gotta circle back on kieran’s whole “you were together while i was away i hoped you would be the thought gave me comfort while i was in the scholomance” statement. the more i think about it the more insane it gets??? so here kieran is hiding in what is essentially a college dorm room, whiling away time by doing this (rightfully) petty-ass literature review of the scholomance’s faerie academia, and he is????? lying awake at night fantasizing about his ex boyfriend and his ex boyfriend’s situationship girlfriend??? fantasizing about them being together together??? tucking himself in cozy-comfy thinking about mark and cristina getting off with each other okay king ! flex that lack of jealousy! we keep joking about cristina’s fujoshi tendencies but kieran is matching her freak 4 freak. it’s not even in like a purely lustful way i truly believe that he was comforted by the idea that his partners were not lonely, the way that he was comforted in the hunt with mark as a lover. which makes it worse. lying there fantasizing about his partners curled up in each other’s arms after having sex for the first time get outta hereeeeeee
kieran is so dramatic in lady midnight. it's funny until it isn't. but rn IT IS funny as hell and i love him !
delete delete delete Cassandra Clare why would you show me this 😭😭😭😭😭

I'm so excited for Better in Black!!!
arranged marriage au where cristina presents herself in faerie to marry a faerie courtier, as part of a deal made long ago by a rosales ancestor to maintain close relations with the fey—she volunteers, because otherwise it would be one of her cousins—and the king gives her, sneeringly, to his least-favored youngest son. well, cristina gets a day to return to the mortal world and bid her family farewell, except a day in the mortal realm can be mere seconds or twenty years in faerie, and by the time the youngest prince comes to collect her there has been a battle, and a coup, and a challenge, and cristina finds herself now preparing to marry the new unseelie king.
except!! except as king his word is law and his wish is everyone’s command, and instead of marrying her he weds her to his companion, a mortal changeling whom everyone knows is the king’s lover. in this way the young unseelie king can remain faithful to his love, while maintaining that he never broke the betrothal—he said he would give cristina his heart, and mark blackthorn is his heart. in this way he has both honored and spurned her. but cristina grows fond of mark, who is in turn intrigued by her connection to the mortal world which he never got to know, and young king kieran seethes with possessiveness and jealousy and begrudging kindness (as is his nature) right up until the inevitable part where they all fall in love
aspects of this AU i’ve been noodling on:
mark’s complicated relationship with identity, i.e. who is considered the real mark blackthorn: is it him, who knows his name? or is it the changeling who took his place and lives his life?
remixed version of kieran’s canon “you can give her your body but not your heart” speech right before mark and cristina’s wedding
cristina presenting herself, mortal and lovely, in faerie. kieran the youngest kindest son pulling her hand trying to get her to run, no good can come from the unseelie king. both of them being thrust into the very center of the court in front of the throne. king arawn looking with amusement at first cristina, then kieran, then at their joined hands.
the juxtaposition of kieran frequently inviting mark to his bed in the most informal manner (guy who is sure of mark’s affections and has told mark he is always welcome) vs that first formal invitation to cristina to join them (guy who is SO NERVOUS and trying to be very polite)
kieran gets shot (protecting mark). cristina knows he didn’t do it for her but she’s beginning to love mark and mark loves kieran so she will not have all of their hearts broken. she sneaks out of faerie with mark’s help back to the rosales house where she knows there is an antidote, or at least a recipe for one. jaime finds her in the kitchen at midnight. he blindfolds her before she can look at him so that she will not be breaking the word of the rosales deal (you will never see your family again). he helps her get the antidote, gives her one last hug. cristina goes back to faerie. kieran is snarling snapping feral with his court healers but he lets cristina help him. cristina isn’t sure if it’s because he’s too tired to fight or because he trusts her but she does not have time to think on it. in the morning when kieran’s fever breaks he tells her if she’d let him die she would have been able to go home. the thought did not occur to cristina even once. shortly after that one of kieran’s attendants shows her the Rose Pavilion, built for cristina in the image of her family garden. a gift from the king. they don’t talk about it
