I saw Jesus is King in IMAX last night. It gave me a lot of weird feelings. The opening scene with the sort of solemn religious music playing and people slowing marching into the room in order truly made me feel strange. This doesn’t seem to be a consensus online, but the combination of sound (especially in an IMAX theater), light and images felt hypnotic to me. I’ve had time to think about it and I think that maybe this is because of my own conceptions and ambiguous thoughts about both organized religion and spirituality as a whole.

With that being said, I think the average person won’t enjoy the film. Even clocking in at under 40 minutes, it’s not traditional in any sense of the word and I feel the casual Kanye (Kanye stans can look away - we find meaning in everything hahahahaha) or hip hop fan will become bored, confused (I heard so many “what the fucks?” at the end) or just generally looking for more in terms of a plot or dialogue (there is no dialogue. None).

Having recently visited an art museum in Denver with my EXTREMELY BORED girlfriend (who, at one point, started reading descriptions in a British accent in a room filled with oil paintings created in like the 17th century lmao), I think this kind of thing could be an exhibit. Definitely a piece of art. And with that distinction comes a lot of mixed feelings. I’m not even sure I enjoyed it, or fully understood it. But that’s why I know it’s art. Kanye is a different breed, but literally nothing about that should be surprising at this point.

Leave it to me to come up with the most convoluted way ever to propose to someone, so I have to continue planning it out for the next six months. With that being said, the only thing surprising here is that it took me 29 (almost) years to arrive at this point.

My 20 year old niece swore into the Air Force today and I promptly went into the bathroom at work and cried in a stall. I thought it was because I felt old or because I’m scared of what joining the military means at a time like this.

But nah, it’s because I grew up with my nieces at home with me, living much more like siblings than nieces. I was only 7 when she was born. I shared a room with her and her mom when she was an infant (a bed, for that matter). I taught her to play soccer (and she played until she graduated high school. She broke some records in the county she played). I took her for rides in the car when I first got my license and put her on to every bit of hip hop she grew up to love. When my ex girlfriend dumped me right after I bought 2 VIP tickets to the Yeezus tour, who did I take instead? My 15 year old niece. When I was in college and basically dying of depression and anxiety, my only solace was coming home every weekend and going hiking with my girls. My other 2 nieces would fall asleep on the long drives back and my oldest would be in the front, carrying on a conversation with me that made me forget she was much younger than me. Hell, by the time she was a teenager, we were up at 2 AM, playing Mario Kart and having discussions about black holes and time travel.

She’s obviously been (technically) an adult for almost 3 years now, but it’s been easy to forget that until now. Now my sweet, super intelligent, forever-questioning-your-opinion-but-so-agreeable-that-I-will-just-drop-it, well-intentioned niece will be heading off to boot camp one day before her 21st birthday. I wasn’t crying for what I originally thought; I was crying because I know things will change. I probably won’t be the first person she asks for money when she needs it (because, let’s be honest: it’s much easier to ask your aunt for money than your parents or grandparents. We are just cool, man. I don’t make the rules!). I won’t get the random phone calls just to, “ask for some advice.” I won’t be able to just stop by for a visit on a sporadic weekend and spend the afternoon sitting on the dock at the lake with her anymore.

I was crying because I’m proud of you. Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a patriotic person, but that is totally irrelevant. I’m proud of you for living out your adventure. Do the damn thing and don’t ever change.
