Black and Arabic subjects painted in romantic or mythic style by European artists are known as “Orientalism”, and - YMMV - often dismissed nowadays as over-dramatic, over-exotic imagery with an unrealistic Arabian Nights flavour.

Check out the works of Jean-Léon Gérôme for more examples; he also did Roman subjects like “Pollice Verso”, the painting which supposedly inspired “Gladiator”, and mythological images such as the frequently-Tumblr’d “Truth Coming Out Of Her Well”. 

BTW, the men shown here don’t represent medieval warriors, because they’ve got 18th-19th century flintlock pistols in their belts. Also, they may actually have been French models, painted in Paris while kitted out in the props which Ludwig Deutsch collected during his travels in the Middle East.

The same shield appears in two paintings here, the same broad metal belt in three, and looking at a wider selection of pictures reveals swords, pistols and even patterned fabrics used again and again.

This doesn’t detract from the paintings’ technical quality; it’s just worth remembering that they were images-for-sale of barbaric, exotic - that word again - splendour. Deutsch in particular churned them out by mix-and-matching poses and locations as well as props.

They weren’t accurate representations of anyone the artist might have encountered in real life.

That said, the third guard down (painted about 1900) looks quite a bit like actor and athlete Woody Strode (1914-1994). IMO, anyway.

Hi, I'm 25 and debating starting male-to-female HRT. However, I'm scared that HRT won't help me at all. It seems like HRT does so little after puberty, especially by the time one gets in their 20s. I'm really scared that I'll just end up being someone in a male body, but with breasts. Is there anything you can say to someone having this fear? Thank you, and sorry, I suspect this is a silly question.

Actually, the claim that HRT doesn’t do much after puberty is a myth.  I started when I was 31 years old and now I’m 35. =)

I already see a lot of people being not too sure about the Korean dub of Heaven Official's Blessing and hey, this is coming from the perspective of a Korean person, but I really like it. Is XL voice a little too deep? Yes. Is the original Chinese version still the most fitting? Yes. But really, if you think about the whole show being dubbed with these VAs, you'll probably get used to it. I mean at first I wasn't sure about XL voice but by the time the trailer ended I loved it. Please just give it a try!
