Chapter 6 features this passage m that is my favorite distillation of Jace and Simon’s dynamic I’ve ever written; consider this my thesis statement for Jimon:

The problem with Simon is that he does everything wholeheartedly with an earnestness that Jace, frankly, finds terrifying. It’s in the way he makes music, completely unrefined and driven entirely by Simon’s desire to open his heart to the world against all common sense and any preservation instincts the man may or may not have. Jace, who has personal walls built ten feet high after a childhood of being shunted from guardian to guardian—Wayland to Morgenstern to Herondale—before landing with the Lightwoods. Jace, who loves the piano because music is a constant that can never leave him as long as he keeps playing. Jace, who is always waiting for the other shoe to drop, and so he has never even attempted to form a connection with another person.

All the bonds he has now are because his friends and family didn’t give up on scaling that ten-foot barrier. Even Simon made it through, though it’s more like he found a secret passageway through music and made a home underneath the castle […]

Switching around tumblrs constantly and taking years-long hiatuses and the algorithm changes and all my mutuals moving on from Shadowhunters fandom since the show’s cancellation has totally tanked my tumblr following and readership since I started this story back in 2018 (or 2017 really since it was spun off of the one-shot Syncopation (It’s what you do to me.) I'm still cooking, but hey, I'm actually writing something for this Jimon story that's been going on for SIX GODDAMN YEARS and I hope there's still an audience for when I post it. And I'm too hype about what I've written just now not to share it will I wait for my bro to finish proofreading this chapter.

-- Set sometime after Jace gets his cherry popped by fwb Simon in chapter 4 of Syncopation (B-Side). --

Jace checks under the lid of the baby grand piano and sees a packet wrapped in a lurid, pink bow sitting on the pinboard, in the corner just under the pegs of the highest notes. 

The pink package isn’t anything special. A gift set of sample sized bath salts in a colorful a variety of scents.  There’s a gift tag attached with a printed note, which Jace reads now for the first time: 

Congrats on losing that V-card, buddy! Hope the wait was worth the hype. Remember to take care of yourself or you’ll regret it later.  - S.L. <3 ;-*

Simon’s initials are followed by an ironic little heart and kissy face, like he does in text messages on days when he’s feeling particularly cheeky. The more hearts and kissy faces, the less they mean. This tag has one of each. 

… Fuck it.  Jace’s resolution to forget it all can wait another day.

He is idealistic about love and courtship, and clearly does not understand how an arrangement like theirs is supposed to work. He just does what he would do with a girlfriend and sticks broski at the end like that makes it any less romantic. It’s stuff like this that messes with Jace’s head.

Started watching anime again and like,

Okay but why is Given written specifically for me? It’s like the author reached into my brain and dragged out intimate personal memories from my life and retooled it for BL. It makes me feel some sort of way to be so viscerally seen but also like…

man even an original character I had lovingly crafted and worked on for 20 years now is exactly represented in this show with such specificity (deeply closeted guy with short blond hair and a silver brow piercing who played violin all his life until meeting a better violinist who he develops an intense and toxic love-hate-rival relationship with and so gets into rock music to go the opposite direction, like did I give my guy such a generic look and backstory??) that I feel a little bit un-special lol.

But then I get to the end of the series and it’s like, kind of the point of the show that everyone goes through shit and we can all relate so I can’t really be that mad about it???

I’m just putting this out there because I’m thinking about it and because I want people to know it’s not just them.

I don’t really read fic anymore. It’s not because I stopped liking it, though. It’s because I made a rule for myself that I’m not able to follow.

I told myself that if I read a fic, I should comment on it. And not just “I loved it!” but a detailed comment. A live reaction or at least quoting favourite lines. Maybe talk about symbolism or about references I caught or about characterization etc.

I did that because I loved the authors I was reading and because I’d received so many lovely comments like that and I wanted to be able to pass that joy onto others. But then I found it hard to actually comment like that.

I could manage it sometimes? Oneshots weren’t too hard, for example, but multichaps? My rule was that I had to comment every chapter. And the kinds of comments I wanted to write, well that meant reading on my laptop because I hate typing on my phone.

Eventually, I felt so guilty when I read fic without commenting on it that I stopped reading fic altogether. Better to just not read if I wasn’t able to hold up my end of the bargain.

I shifted out of my fandom not long after that, and I haven’t found a new one that’s sparked the same interest (ie obsession), so I don’t know if I might be able to fix this habit if I ever get into a new fandom in the future. All I know is, don’t be like me.

Comment as you can and when you can, but don’t set up strict rules like I did. I can’t speak for all authors of course, but I know that personally, I’d rather you enjoy my work without commenting at all rather than make yourself feel so guilty you stop reading it altogether.

I miss the days between like 2005-2012 when tv shows had fun online content like IMOSCAR.COM from arrested development and Gus from Psych’s blog that was updated *weekly* from which to this day I think about the blog where he talks about his grandma’s home remedy for the cold (it was duct taping bananas to his hands and feet.)

Not to make this about the strikes, but the way the pivot to streaming is also reflective of cost cuts on things like those bonus features and episode orders and the writers room being cut down in size are more examples of how corporate greed is making tv media a worse landscape.

Quora aside, when I was a teen I went to this brothel museum up in Skagway that was super interesting! It’s called the Red Onion and was built in 1897, so very tail end of 19e but there’s a bunch of interesting old timey things on display like condoms (made of silk, animal intestine) and sex toys (with hand cranks! Look like torture devices!). Women also used homeopathic remedies to pregnancy too, poisonous herbs that would cause abortion etc. https://www.redonion1898.com

imagine you start watching this new show and it’s a silly little show about space set in the future then they announce the next season so you wait excitedly for five months and finally it’s here… you all sit round the tv and suddenly one of the main characters who is known for being unemotional starts going mad because of “biology…” and you slowly realise that he needs to have sex or he’s going to die so the other main character risks his entire career to help him out then they start ‘wrestling’ on the sand and the one going through the mating fever ends up killing the other guy which ends the fever but now he’s depressed because he just killed his best friend but wait he’s not actually dead the unemotional one is overjoyed everything’s fine and then they go back to work like nothing happened… you look at everyone else sitting in stunned silence thinking “did any one else think that was a little… yknow” then you accidentally start modern fandom and shipping culture

Based on some of the first-hand accounts I’ve read, fans already had thoughts in that direction but were very cautious about expressing them, because, you know, it was 1967 and they were nice suburban ladies. They referred to the idea of Spock and Kirk being in love as The Premise. One little housewives’ fan club in California wrote to Leonard Nimoy in the hiatus between seasons one and two, and he was very pleasant and agreed to come and meet their group and tell them about being in the show. They didn’t say anything about The Premise directly, in case it offended him, but of course they expressed their enthusiasm for the rapport between Kirk and Spock and how curious they were about Spock’s background and inner life. And Nimoy, who was working on season two by that time, said that he couldn’t give away any specifics but there was an episode coming up that would focus more on Spock’s personal life and the planet Vulcan, and they were naturally delighted and intrigued.

So when they sat down to watch season two, episode one, “Amok Time,” they were primed for an important Spock episode, and then that played out before their widening eyes and I think it’s safe to say it blew their beehives clean off their heads.

And it’s also worth bearing in mind that Amok Time was written by Theodore Sturgeon. Sturgeon was a bisexual writer (according to his friend, gay author and academic Samuel R Delany) who wrote “The World Well Lost” (1953) which may have been the first SF story about homosexuality to be published in a mainstream SF magazine, not to mention gay-coded stories like “The Saucer of Loneliness”. Ted Sturgeon was a brilliant writer about love, and he knew exactly what he was doing in Amok Time. Although he might not have known what it would spawn.

And if you are curious to read some of his fiction there’s a Selected Short Stories of Theodore Sturgeon out there, and the novels The Dreaming Jewels and More Than Human appear to be in print.
