New game coming from Larian: Divinity Reveal Trailer
"Larian are hard at work on their next roleplaying game, a continuation of the Divinity saga. Divinity is their biggest game ever, that's right, even larger than Baldur's Gate 3, promising more breadth and depth than ever before."
This is what the statue/monument in the desert is about. it's called the Hellstone.
"The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir. Built by the team who brought you Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios unchains its ambitions to bring you an RPG with greater breadth & depth than ever before. Sign up for the Larian Gazette: divinity.com"

The Lady of Time and Space, Cirilla
The fact that the crew in the opening of Pillars Of Eternity: Deadfire refer to you as 'captain' implies the first part of the voyage was kinda weird.
Like, you're a sailor looking for work, and so you take a job for some noble sailing from the Dyrwood to the Deadfire. Standard stuff. But you rock up to find a farmer carrying a statue, and the statue is like "Hi! I hired you on behalf of your new captain. Who's currently kind of dead. But hopefully they'll get better." And it's weird, but the statue is paying your bills, so I guess whoever she says is the captain is the captain.
So you get underway, and the 'captain' is doing exactly 0 captaining (not that it's really their fault), but both the farmer and the statue with the money are still insisting they're the captain, and the boatswain is content just being a boatswain, so everyone just kind of accepts that the captain is mostly-kind-of-dead.
So you make it to the Deadfire, the statue making pretty much all the decisions while insisting they're just a steward, when you run into some pirates. Alright, ordinary problem at least. So the pirate captain wants to speak to your captain, so Eld Engrim goes to fetch them, which means 'go fetch the statue because the captain's dead', which means 'go fetch the farmer because what's the statue going to do' (to be fair, there's worse people to handle pirates than a burly war veteran). And out struts the captain like they actually are the captain, and haven't been pretty much dead the whole damn trip. And they fight off the pirates.
Just in time for the storm to pick up and drive you onto the coastline. You eventually pick yourself up and start to regroup, and up comes the captain, who is indeed no longer a corpse, going "Hi! I'm your captain now? Cool. Pleasure to meet you. Also, I'm the Herald Of Berath and we're chasing Eothas." And the rest of the voyage only gets weirder.
And there's a slight chance they're accompanied by the small child they kidnapped.
