Riddle loves talking to Yua about her original world under the guise of “its not everyday you meet someone from another world” (he really just wants to keep her attention to himself) and her soft launching nature vs nurture.
Yua: it’s so interesting how your society works.
Riddle: what do you mean?
Yua: I mean how murder is normalized here as well as kidnapping and stalking
Riddle: but that’s normal?
Yua: not back home it’s not, it’s very illegal, but I guess that’s just the difference on how we were socialized.
Yua’s off handed comment (it wasn’t off handed it was super intentional but riddle didn’t notice) should have been nothing but Riddle keeps thinking about it, how we were socialized? Like animals? What do you mean? He knows Yua has the same brain as darlings (he had to pay a lot of money to get those brain scans from Idia) so what does that mean?
Yua: did you know that healthy brains that haven’t been impacted by psychological trauma actually look different than those who haven’t
Riddle: really? How… interesting
Yua: yeah people under intense stress and traumatic events also can develop something called PTSD that causes things like flashbacks to those events
Alarm bells start going off in Riddles head at the possibility that Yua’s brain isn’t actually what the average brain looks like in her world due to trauma, he knows she struggled a lot after his overblot she couldn’t even come near him with out panicking, so why does it look so similar to darlings.
Yua: wanna know something strange?
Riddle: *raises his eyebrow* sure
Yua: the fact that children who witness abuse or were victims tend to be abusers themselves
Riddle: … really, I would’ve thought the opposite
Yua: I thought so too, but it’s well documented, and they are more likely to commit violent crimes
Riddle remembers her violent crimes talk (he at first didn’t understand it, but when Yua explained how it psychologically affected people he understood why it would be frowned, especially if the citizens were more like darlings than yanderes, it also made him more determined to hide certain things from her) but this time it made him uncomfortable, people especially children witnessing and experiencing abuse and violent were more likely to repeat it, that struck at something deep. (That wasn’t like him though he was just being normal yandere he wasn’t mentally fucked up like people in her world… right? Or at least most yanderes weren’t. They weren’t causing stress to their darlings to the point it changed how their brain looked that was what a normal darlings brain looked like) safe to say Riddle wasn’t getting any sleep after that conversation.
Yua: it’s so interesting how if you don’t have a genetic component to a disorder you can’t develop it even if all the environmental factors are there.
Riddle: some disorders require a genetic component?
Yua: yeah, like schizophrenia for example, drugs and alcohol can trigger it, but don’t for most people because they aren’t genetically predisposed. Some cluster B personality disorders are the same.
Riddle realizing theirs a genetic component changes everything for him before the questions were simply keeping him up at night now he was actively pacing, was it possible to turn Yua into a yandere if she had the genetic variant… wait what was he saying, being a yandere wasn’t some disorder caused by a combination of environmental factors and genetic ones, right? RIGHT?!
Yua: isn’t it weird that darling couples tend to produce more darling children than that of yandere and darling couples and yandere couples tend to produce more yandere children?
Riddle hasn’t slept for a week after hearing that, his dormmates start to worry. He keeps trying to find evidence that the theory that’s starting to form in his head using Yua’s worlds more advanced psychology is wrong, she’s from another world it has to be, but the more he researches the more he finds his theory being right.
Riddle: I’m not sure what to do Trey I keep finding more and more information that being a yandere is a disorder and we actively stress out our children and darlings by doing what we’re doing to them, I mean it all makes sense now! Why she’s so anxious all the time! Of course of course, I just need to find a way to get better, we’ve talked about this, there is treatment for people like us. Trey you have to listen apparently being a darling is actually what our brains are programmed to be, but because of the environment and a genetic mutation we’ve been triggering it, yes yes that makes so much sense, I’ve finally solved why yanderes and darlings exist! It’s how we handle trauma Trey, don’t you see?!
Trey: *he has no idea how he came to this conclusion and thinks it’s from sleep deprivation* let’s put the coffee down riddle and go to bed it’s been a long day.
