This was my first time drawing a wheelchair so I definitely got a few details wrong, but I still think it looks pretty good considering!

it's disability pride month guys, so let's stop with the able-bodied & neurotypical headcanons for characters. make that character disabled! make them neurodivergent! give them mobility & support aids! make their disability affect them in some tangible way! give them mental & physical disabilities! make that injury disable them! & if the character is disabled in canon? expand on that! look at it deeper! research their canon disability & show some love to them!

make your own disabled rep & lift up the disabled rep we already have!

idk just thinking about facts that we've all forgotten. anyways annabeth's adhd does better in clean spaces because they're less distracting for her, percy has lung problems post-tartarus (but for some reason nico and annabeth don't??? maybe he already had an underlying condition because of Gabe, I guess that's possible), reyna and nico share the habit of twisting their rings when theyre nervous, piper got a lip scar just like jason in the same fight that cost him his life, rick has confirmed that the hephaestus cabin makes tricked-out chairs for campers in wheelchairs and for goodness' sake piper is unlabelled guys

how and when to keep a character's physical disability in universes with magic*

reblogs are very encouraged but not mandatory

magic caused their disability -> the magic that caused it was too strong therefore magic cannot fix it -> don't make the character look for a magic cure in this case -> seriously. stablish theres no cure if you want. just don't make them look for the cure -> although. bonus if they Could get a cure. they just Don't Want One. -> don't make them being disabled a punishment for Doing Something Bad. nor a punishment in general. a spell going wrong is far better. trust me. Disability As A Punishment is overused asf. -> only write them hating magic for this if you plan to make them embrace both magic and their disability in the future. otherwise give them a positive relationship with magic since the beginning.

magic removes their disability -> don't do that -> mainly if they become abled when they're in their Super Form (example freddy freeman). do NOT. fucking. do that. -> let them stay disabled even if superpowered. invent some excuse or whatever. -> other option is let it remove the disability but keep them using their aids out of habit. you need to be very careful with that one tho bc you can fuck it up -> overall just. don't remove their disability -> oh but don't let their disability make them less of a hero fuck that -> if you make them the "weak link" of their team i will kill you with hammers

evil magic removes their disability -> if you plan to make a plot twist where the magic was actually Evil all along you not only can but Should remove their disability -> show their discomfort with this -> but it remains ignored because "you should be happy you're abled now!!" -> in the end its found out them being made abled was foreshadowing the magic's Evilness -> again. very careful with this one. -> still the implications of Evil Magic Making Them Abled are so much better than Evil Magic Keeping Them Disabled. trust me. seen both.

their own/other characters' healing powers should make them abled/"heal" their disability -> either stabilish that healing powers can only heal stuff that can be healed with modern medicine (aka not disabilities and chronic conditions and stuff) -> (least fav option) stabilish that it can heal that stuff temporarily, but it comes back worse soon enough so its not worth it -> or make the disabled character to not be willing to try and get healed -> not bc they're scared but bc they'd rather stay disabled

magic could make their disability less disabling without removing it -> this can actually be very well done -> for example if a characters disability is worsened by cold, casting a spell that makes the room warmer -> or if they switch between mobility aids through the day, a spell that makes their mobility aids tiny (pocket sized) so they can carry them around more easily -> or a spell that makes their wheelchair move on its own without them needing to push it bc they're too flared/exhausted to manually push themself -> as a general rule tho. keep it at things that can be done irl, or at least make it inspired by them

disability as a punishment (they were cursed/they threw a spell too advanced even tho they were warned not to/etc) -> just don't do this -> seriously. pick another punishment. don't fucking do this.

*this guide is for abled writers: if you have a physical disability you can do whatever you want forever :3 (technically you can too if you are abled. but i will be pissed at abled writers who ignore this. so not worth it.)

No one would know If Shang Qinghua had POTS and here’s why

Everyone knows he fake faints all the time so no one blinks an eye when he real faints

He’s so anxious all the time that him having shakey hands just kind of makes sense

He constantly craves salty food but that’s just because he forgets to hydrate

Of course his heart rate is up! He’s constantly stressed!

Of course he’s not that athletic, he’s the paperwork peak lord.

Of course he’s tired all the time he’s always overworking himself

He’s vomiting because he has anxiety and a weak stomach

He’s sweating so much because anxiety+never working out

And finally, to put the nail in the coffin, he never visits Mu Qingfang because he’s hiding injuries

So what I’m trying to say is Shang Qinghua could definitely hide pots for years and this can be used as a plot device.

For example:

he tries to stand up and help fight big monster but faints and everyone thinks he’s faking but Mu Qingfang checks anyway and would you look at that! he’s out cold

Shen Qingqiu (either flavor) gets annoyed at him for shaky handwriting on important documents and asks (demands) him to stop writing in a panicked or sleep deprived state only for Shang Qinghua to pull out “My hands shake no matter how happy and well rested I am. That’s just how they are”

Shang Qinghua stands up to get something during a meeting and his vision blacks out so he takes two steps straight into a chair.

They go somewhere warm on a mission and Shang Qinghua struggles

Mu Qingfang does a regular check up and one of the first things they do is a heart rate test. Except unlike previous years they do it standing. He checks, then tries to reassure Shang Qinghua, thinking he must be extremely nervous. Shang Qinghua is like “I’m not nervous tho? Why would I be? We do these yearly,” And they don’t even do full body scans for injuries Shang Qinghua doesn’t leave Qian Cao until late that night

been thinking about Eridian special education and disabilities.

Do you think they have classroom aides?? I think that would be fun. An adult shows up to class and Grace is like ?? And the adult says come. We have to meet.

It turns out one of his new students is 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎵. Grace says hi and they don't sing back, only tap tap tapping on the ground. They understand, but they can't sing, the adult with them says. The two of them have their own methods of communication with gestures and taps, but the adult is here to help them communicate when they need. They also get upset easily and have a hard time self-regulating. Eridians typically can multitask at five different things at once and have conversations about multiple things at once with their many vocal sacs, but this student has a hard time following multiple conversation threads. The adult is here to make sure they're able to get access to the class like their classmates.

A light goes on.

"Oh," Grace says, "Oh! You're a paraeducator!"

Grace wasn't involved in the SPED program, but he remembers them, all of a sudden. There was one that mostly sat in the back on their phone, but there was one who would ask for copies of the curriculum so they could prepare adaptations ahead of time. Gen ed teachers don't have enough time to prepare all the IEP adaptations that they should. It was good to have the help.

(His new student turns out to have a great time. He only speaks with one conversation thread at once, so they actually have a much easier time following him than they do other Eridians. Another light bulb goes off, and talking to Rocky produces in relatively short order another device for translation, modified for a young Eridian to bring with them. And that's how AAC devices get invented on Erid.)

Having a flare up right now so I'm hitting the creeps with my disability headcannon ray. TW for general talk about physical and mental disabilities, mentions of suicide, disordered eating, and canon-typical violence

E.J. with back pain from leaning down to talk to people. E.J. with sciatica and muscle pain and herniated disks from long nights leaning over his desk to study for exams, and even longer nights leaning over his operating table. E.J. that would advise anyone in his situation to wear a back brace, yet refuses to wear his own because being a demon is already humiliating enough. E.J. that will groan about how his brace looks under his shirts, and in the same breath comfort someone else about the appearance of their own aids and how little others' opinions of them matter. E.J. that got bullied for his extra needs in his human life and is terrified of it happening again. E.J. that would rather be in unnecessary pain than set himself up for more ridicule.

Toby that severely underestimates his anhidrosis and frequently passes out from hyperthermia. Toby that has to be reminded to remove his extra layers when he's inside or during the summer. Toby that wears long sleeves and bulky clothes to hide his scars from the crash, and pays dearly for it when he forgets how long he's been wearing them for. Toby that spiraled badly after his first heat induced seizure. Toby that spent a week hiding in his room after E.J. let him leave the med bay. Toby that is now hyper aware of his anhidrosis, and decides to start wearing thinner clothes to avoid another seizure. Toby that then managed to give himself mild hypothermia by wearing a vest and shorts in December. Toby that now has to double check the weather forecast and run all his outfits by one of the other proxies before he leaves the house, just in case.

Tim with chronic migraines, insomnia, and schizophrenia that only worsened with his slender sickness. Tim that can't read small print because his visual snow makes it incomprehensible. Tim that can't leave the big light on for too long or else his head will start throbbing. Tim that gets migraines so bad that they block his vision. Tim that has spent more money on Valium and Paracetamol than he has on his water bill. Tim with addictive tendencies that is scared he'll get hooked on any medication that works for him. Tim that freaks out when he notices the difference his medication makes, and assumes that the fact that he feels better on them means he's addicted. Tim that decides to "quit" and needs to be coaxed back into taking them like a scared animal. Tim that is finally able to fall asleep nowadays, but still doesn't feel well rested after 8 hours of sleep. Tim that is constantly spooked by the many entities he works with, and is constantly assuming that his antipsychotics have stopped working because of hallucinations caused by his "co-workers". Tim that groans internally after every mission, knowing he has at least two hours of staring at a laptop and going over recon footage in his near future. Tim that could cry from gratitude (if he had the energy to) when Brian offers to take care of the recon footage instead.

Jeff that got some nasty infections from his cheek wounds, and ended up with post viral ME/CFS. Jeff with nerve damage from his "thing of bleach". Jeff that gets random shooting pains and constant pins and needles that won't go away no matter what he tries. Jeff that doesn't understand why he's so tired after doing small tasks, when he used to be able to go on whole killing sprees without so much as a sore wrist in his "prime". Jeff with matted hair and aching teeth that just can't bring himself to roll over in bed on his bad days, let alone take care of himself. Jeff that hates the idea of using a mobility aid, but soon enough won't have a choice. Jeff that's waiting for all this to go away and for everything to return to normal. Jeff that's only getting worse.

Habit with ASPD that is surprisingly self destructive on his bad days. Habit that has ruined years of meticulously planned, drawn out torture on his victims by lashing out violently in a fit of boredom. Habit that can't stand the way his skin crawls when he's gone too long without excitement. Habit that buys a new machete and swears it'll be his favourite, only to replace it a week later when it stops feeling special. Habit that genuinely surprised himself with how long it took him to get bored of Vinny. Habit that has committed suicide in multiple of his vessels, only to end up bored again when he's back in his true form and his adrenaline has faded. Habit that has probably tried every recreational drug on the market, and killed a few vessels by getting laced. Habit that has to feed on random civilians regularly to keep himself occupied and avoid killing off the important members of his plans. Habit that has tried plenty non-lethal, comparably "harmless" things to keep his boredom at bay. Habit that has over eaten, under eaten, started and stopped every hobby, developed addictions and quit cold turkey, all in the name of getting rid of his horrible feeling of understimulation. Habit that's a sadistic murderer not because he's an Antisocial, but because he's a fucked up interdimentional parasite cannibal wolf thing.

Genuinely though, if you think all Antisocials are freaks like Habit then get off my blog. They're real human beings suffering from mental disorders, not horror tropes. Don't be weird about them.
