We've all talked to death about how it's gotta suck to die over and over again in a 22 minute loop with only one other person who remembers, but have we considered what it's gotta look like to the people in the village? The travelers?

This kid, who you've grown up with, known their whole life, or known your whole life, wakes up on the day of their first solo mission and is acting completely different. They're cold, distant, the light that was in their eyes just yesterday is gone.

And if we think about all the experimental deaths: this kid you've known for years, on what is possibly the most important day of their life, wakes up acting different. They completely ignore you and jump straight into a geyser to drown themself. Arkose watches the astronaut that's been around their whole life jump into a patch of ghost matter and die for no reason.

For the rest of the loop, it's got to be chaos, confusion, and painful speculation. Why would they do this? Some well-hidden depression? Did they crack from the stress of their first flight? Had they planned this, or was it just some horrible impulse?

One of my favourite details about the Feldspar subplot in Outer Wilds is that (in my experience) I always find Feldspar to be a little bit of an asshole compared to what I'd expect after hearing what the others around the village have to say about them. The rose-coloured glasses of grief and old legend have settled around their image back on Timber Hearth so much, and the person to be found on Dark Bramble isn't a disappointment in the afterglow of that, but they are a lot more three-dimensional. They're a little patronizing sometimes ("...You never were the brightest hatchling, were you?" isn't exactly the response I would give to an exclamation about myself being improbably still living), and listening to them talk about their own heroism is just slightly more offputting than when the villagers back home do it. There's still a genuine fire there, a strong love of exploration and an admirable boldness that leaves no question how their passion took this project to the stars...but they're a lot closer to a neighbour, when found, than a hero with a ten-foot-tall image. A neighbour who can be a little annoying sometimes, in spite of the laundry list of impressive things they've done. I like that a lot. I like that the grief smoothed them out too much, in the minds of the Hearthians, and that finding them living roughs that impression up just enough to be real again.
