You drop your keys on the table and let out a long sigh. I can tell just by your tired silhouette in the door frame that you’ve been home in your mind for hours. “Honey, i’m home” you say just loud enough for me to hear. I walk over from the kitchen to catch you in my arms. We fit into each other like estranged puzzle pieces and I try and take some of your weight. “Rough day?” I whisper into your chest. “Better now”, you mumble into my hair. Just as we begin to slip out of time we hear the pitter patter of feet coming down the hall. “Daddy!” a high pitched voice shrieks. You let go of me to see a tiny face of pure joy running towards you. You give a weary smile and bend down to the floor with arms outstretched. She runs into your arms, nearly toppling you both. I laugh at the sight of a 5 year old girl taking down a grown man. “Hello Hadley darling”, you smile. “And what did you do today sweetie?” you ask as you pick her up off the ground and stand. “ I learned to color my name! Wanna see?!” she exclaimed with pride. You put her down and she leads the way to the fridge where her work is proudly displayed. There you see “Hadley” scrawled in red crayon. “Red is the bestest color so I colored my name in it” she explains in all seriousness. “Of course it is honey good job!” you say sweetly. Then you see another drawing of a man in a cape. “Show daddy the other one Hadley, the one you shared with class today” I tell her with wide eyes and glancing over at you. “ I drew a picture of the most super man in the world, which is... daddy!” she giggled as she pointed to it. As you looked at it a smile spread wide across your face and the day melted away. I walk up to kiss your forehead and say, ”I know you’re superman to me.”
