Is there an adult way to deal with moving away? I'm a rising sophomore in college, and my mom has decided to move to a different state for a new job. I know my family needs money, but I'm afraid that I'm going to lose all of my high school friends. (They've never put in the effort to visit me at my out-of state school.) I feel like leaving will be like tossing my teenage life away. I know I should be happy for my mom for getting the job, but I hate the new place and I'm so unhappy. Any advice?
Hi there, Anon! I know this is a tough situation. We’ve made a couple videos that might be useful, including a Q&A that talks about homesickness and a video on making friends. Hope they help!
- Mike
Hey! I’m reblogging/replying and hopefully anonymous reads this but I’m going through a similar situation. My parents are also going to migrate to a new state next year and like the poster, I know what it’s like to essentially “lose your roots”. The benefit I had was that I knew about a year ago, and my parents have been understanding. But I’ll tell you you are justified to be upset and not like the new place. You cannot change your feelings. What you can change is how you express and act on those feelings. Talk about them with a friend/family member/counselor/ trusted individual. Know that your family you love is still there, just in a different place. As for your highschool friends, if you end up falling out of touch it’s okay. As soon as I went to college I didn’t hear from my a lot of my highschool friends again. And that’s okay. I made a ton of friends of college, some of which I still hang out with now that I live and work in the same state I went to college to. And I didn’t really start making friends until my sophmore/ junior year. I made a ton when I became an RA (When you’re back in college go to your RA events. Meet other residents and support your RA’s programs no matter how corny). I’ve rambled a lot, but in general, you’ll be okay and if you want to get in touch to talk about this, let me know.

From Dewport to Slateport

So why I'm typing this, I'm enjoying the cheesy sounds of elevator music while waiting for my airline I booked for Saturday to answer my reservation question. I figured since this is going to take me awhile, I might as well catch you up. Now as you can probably guess, I didn't get too much done my last play session. I didn't play at all on Saturday; mostly because I had stuff I needed to get done and I also really needed to take it easy. Yet tomorrow I'll probably be playing quite a lot. And now with my flight reservation confirmed, I'm going to talk about my experience. So there I was doing my initial talk to all the NPC's, I got to easily one of my favorite moments in the session. Remember "trends", it was a weird mechanic where you could talk to this house of trends, and I talked to a kid was was talking about Potion Festivals. I was sincerely confused for a long moment, before the kid asked me if I knew about potion festivals, I said I didn't...and then the best thing happened. So, it asks you to talk about a trendy thing, by choosing an item in your inventory and adding a suffix of party, master, festival, etc. So what's trending now in Dewport? Float Stone Masters! For those of you just reading, look at my previous entry for context. When I figure out how not to make a giant ugly link appear, I'll edit. So this became the joke for me that would never not be funny and that's okay. I hope your trending trends make you smile every time you hear them. So onto actual business, AKA: Brawly. Oh dear god the gym puzzle. Now, I don't know if I could have gotten flash and used it, but I highly doubt it. It was a lot of me running into walls and arguing with the game that there had to be a block in a certain spot. Yet thankfully it was only a short, painful experience with Christine, my ralts being the best psychic/fairy she can be. Besides the puzzle, there really wasn't anything special going on, so I moved passed to the next item of business. I fished in town for a little bit, and also discovered that unfortunately the dex nav -to my knowledge- only takes account that you need to fish a pokemon, but does not account for the need for different rods, so that won't be completed for awhile. So now to Granite Cave. I personally was prepared to catch a ton of pokemon and wander around the dark...but that didn't happen. I went in the cave and found your zubats and makuhita . Also in the caves and abras and geodudes. But the geodudes were not spawning for me, and abra is the same PITA it has always been. There's also no real cave. Let me explain. I prepared myself, taught Sauske the nincada flash and headed into the depths of granite cave to find: Just Steven. Now granted, Steven Stone is very pretty, and his 3D modal is great, and it is a very atmospheric and cinematic moment when you two meet. They finally shoe-in some mega evolution speak and then he's gone. So I go through the cave, nothing spawning for me, and the only other path is a bike path. So until I get a bike, I can't finish the dex nav in here either, but I vow to return and head to slateport. I remember Slateport, it's a very large area and when you get there, if you're not prepared, you can be blind-sided by some trainer battles. Yet nothing was terribly difficult, and the seahorse shack was honestly just as annoying as I remember it being in the last game. But I get to the city, and go through the second (or I guess third technically) Team Aqua encounter, you save the ship captain and also still have to pay to get in the museum and you can't shop in the secret power market, and you can't particpate in contest. If you could not tell, this was a frustrating session for me, and it is not the game's fault, or an inherit flaw but not every place can be super memorable. I'm about to leave and hope to find something more interesting when there's another cut scene where we meet Lisia. Please appreciate for a moment how long it took me to spell check that name. She's looking for a star to train in the world of contest and picks me even though I'm clearly bewildered and confused. That's not assumption or snarky remark, that's literally what she says. But she takes you away, and gives you a pass to actually participate in contests and gives you an ... outfit. Now I will say I really like the dude's contest outfit...but the one for the girl....ehhhhhh. It's mostly because I'm not a pink person in general, and this is where I would have appreciated if they had given us some choice to customize the character. I get why because the contest relies on art portraits instead of 3D sprites, which is fine. But I enter my first contest, and I have to say, the first thing I really appreciate is the music. It's really upbeat, and fast paced and everything in general is really pretty to look at. Yet my first contest is in cleverness with, I'm sure you guessed it, Toadett the shroomish. She was surprisingly fabulous and got a lot of appeal in the contest. I guess it was judging how "smart" she was but either way, it was a great time and I really like the re-entry for the series into contest. After winning, I got the highly touted Cosplay Pikachu...and promptly put her in the PC box. I know, I know, it's really cool and adorable, but I really don't find pikachu...interesting and I don't appreciate the gimmick as some others do. And that's okay. So with a new badge, a contest, I finally head off, and whatever I find, I'll let you know tomorrow. Yet I leave you with this question: What do you think of the new Contests?

So guess what I did today? If you guessed finish a seven page paper, you are not wrong! Remember kids, have your video games be your motivators to get stuff done. So this is my experience from last night, and I'm really hope I don't ramble my way that I have to cut up the three hour experience I had yesterday into 3+ long winded tumblr posts. So, when we last left off, I was in Petalburg, and had just left my Dad to continue my adventure, where I ended up going back to Route 102 just to get a ralts of my own, named Christine. With my party rearranged, my bag brimming with pokeballs and hope in my heart, I finally left Petalburg behind and went to route 104. Which as a route I think brings back some of the most memories of Hoenn. Fighting right off the beach, and catching some of the first flying types, before heading off into the Petalburg Woods. Yet one thing did happen, where I talked to a little boy NPC asked for a potion for his pokemon that had been injured. This must be a new feature, or something I hope gets a pay off, because I do not remember. Just something to note before I move on. The woods, I have to say were very atmospheric, as they are in all the games. Dark, but very green, with bug catchers crawling about. A couple of important things do end up happening. First, you get your Exp-share, which I do use and I'm not ashamed to. The main story of pokemon is not difficult, and I don't believe in making things difficult through grinding, but that's just me. The other thing is your first battle with Team Aqua, which I know is supposed to be built up...but at the end of the day it's just a grunt. Yet there is a little cinematic when you leave the forest, that does sort of build up some suspense. Finally though, we're in Rustboro, and it is HUGE. I remember it being a large area before, and honestly it probably hasn't changed in scale, but the different perspective in 3D definitely makes a large difference. It also adds some character, as before I even set foot towards a gym, I got the chance to look at all the buildings, towards all the NPC's. This is where the writing actually gets interesting, and this is my favorite joke/encounter so far. So, you go to the Devon apartments, and on the second floor is an ace trainer. You talk to him and he gives you the items float stones. For those of you who do not know: Float stones halves a pokemon weight. I went up to the third floor, not really thinking much more about it, talk to the NPC before heading down, and now instead of the ace trainer is a Hiker who says "I think I put on some weight recently" . I figured out HTML guys, be proud. Anywho, I've finally talked to everyone except the people at Devon Co. and now it is time for the moment of truth. I go to the Rustboro gym, and Roxanne is there to greet you. Now, it is your basic rock first gym, but I really loved the design of it. Roxanne is a top student in her class, so her gym is part museum/ part library. Also, props to the kabutops robot in the corner of the screen. Startled me the first time I saw it. So after wiping the floor with Finn the mudkip, I defeated the gym, and guess what, we have to go catch team Aqua. I should mention at this point, my forth team member at this point is a shroomish named Toadett -I know it is spelled wrong, I'll fix it soon-. Anywho, I go to Route 116 to catch a skitty, struggle catching a whismur, and once again wipe the floor. During this time, my mudkip finally becomes a big boy and grows into a marshtop, which is still kind of cute, kind of beefy in between, as most of the stage one evolution are, yet Finn as most starters is my MVP and my buddy. Another thing I realize is that no one in my current party knows how to use cut. Not a one, and I'm worried I'm going to have to pick up Rocket the Zigzagoon when the savior of the day appears. I catch a Nincada, his name is Sauske, and at the moment I'm hoping to get him to twenty quickly so I can get both my Ninjask and Shedinga. He also can learn cut. So at least he'll be more useful than Rocket during my journey. So all is well, and I finally go into the gave where to no one's surprise, I come across the Team Aqua member and proceed to make him crumble against my pokemon. I finally make it back to Devon Co and meet the president. I'm given my quest to go to Dewford, and head back to 104 to see Mr. Briney who chasing Peeko around the table is kind of hilarious in 3D. Anywho, he offers to give me a ride and that is where I saved and called it a night. Tonight, I'll continue the saga, but while we're still in Dewford tell me: who was your early game MVP?
From the start to Petalburg
NOTE: This is NOT a review and it may have SPOILERS. This is a personal project where I myself am choosing to document an experience of one of my favorite Pokemon games. Feel free to like, comment and reblog with your own experience.
So yesterday, Alpha Sapphire finally came out. I don't know how but I was thankfully not spoiled by any additional information beyond something I wasn't already aware of. As mentioned previously, I am a college student in a rural area, so today my copy was shipped to me in the afternoon. I waited a little bit longer to play it so I could actually get some school work done. That's one of the cool things your favorite game coming out, you can force yourself to not play it until you get some homework done. Yet I finally popped in the cartridge and started the game. The same trailer at the end of the demo played again, but finally I was taken to the title screen where I finally started to feel all the months of hype and nostalgia culminate. I have to say, as soon as I pressed start, it was the perfect re-introduction. I was taken to the original sapphire opening screen with a sprite Professor Birch and a blacked out touch screen. He gives the speech about the world of pokemon and slowly your Pokenav lowers to reveal the 3D world. Outside cuts to pokemon playing out in the wild and it was such an amazing shot. I don't know why, but I love the idea that you're just fiddling on your Nav putting your information into the screen while you wait to exit the moving van. Everything else plays out how you would expect, your go see your Mom, she's really excited about a clock that Dad got you and tells you to see your room. I really loved the Lapras doll in my room, and I hope I can somehow stuff that into my secret base. That aside, I did the quick check around and saw I myself don't have a PC, which is weird in context, but I get it. Did anyone really use their personal PC? So I go back downstairs, and we go through Mom missing the T.V program, and telling you to meet your neighbors. Littleroot finally opens up, and while its a cool place, it still is the small starting area you're confined to for the first duration of the game. You meet your neighbor, in this case: Brenden who as far as rival / friends go is pretty much the same. It is always super cinematic whenever you talk to Brenden and he's honestly...still a kind of a boring character. That's okay though, he serves more as a guide than anything else. He runs off, I start talking to the NPC's in town and finally: I head into the tall grass. In an instant I see Professor Birch, being chased in 3D and it is just really funny, but finally comes the moment of truth: you choose your starter. I see mudkip and pick him with little hesitation. I did think for a moment about starting with Treecko, and while I like his design and line, I prefer a tank-y starter. Plus mudkip is fricken adorable, memes aside, have you seen his 3D modal? Occasionally he'll just be standing around and then he'll open his mouth into a smile and tilt his head. Also if you get a mudkip and are not half way through the game at this point: Play in pokemon amie with your mudkip. You will not regret it. So I defeat the first battle with no problem, and Birch sends me off to meet up with his son. Now we're in the weird limbo where its the game, but it is still very much a tutorial. You can't catch anything so you beat on wurmples until your face turns blue and make it to Oldale town. A shop keeper runs up to you to give you your tour of the town and this honestly is the most frustrating part in the game for any pokemon fan. I understand that every pokemon game is someone's first, but it does make you feel so boxed in until you finally climb up to 103 and there's Brenden. I went through the first rival battle, and honestly I think it is the first time I've had to use growl in a pokemon game, but I digress. I whoop Brenden a new one, and we go back to Birch where finally we get the pokedex and the Dex nav app (I'll get to the app in a second). Finally you're off, almost, before your Mom comes to say goodbye. Now, I don't know about scale, or how far away from Petalburg we are, but your Mom comes and she sees you're about to go on your journey...and the two of you stand there. Gamefreak, you missed a perfect hug oppertunity. This is a 3D modal, you can convey that the Mom is going to genuinely miss and be worried about the child who's going out into the world. Even if she is completely cool and assured that her pokemon will keep her safe, she will still miss her child. And she pauses as she walks away to wave to you. Second missed hug oppertunity. But I'm going to stop right here because finally, FINALLY, you are out in the world. You've been given pokeballs, and as promised, I've been catching every possible pokemon in an area that I can. While I'm disappointed by lack of hugs in gamefreak, I do love the dexnav app. It is perfect! Well, not really but it is implemented really well. If you've seen a pokemon but have not caught it, its silhouette appears. And the new search/ radar function is so amazing. It makes it clear what pokemon you'll come across. I'm only past the first gym and I have nearly all the pokemon in those starting areas thanks to that map...but I disgress. I start catching all the pokemon, and giving all the pokemon I catch ridiculous nicknames. Finn is my mudkip, and Erebus is my poochyena, and at this point in my story are the pokemon sticking with me. I go down route 102, and start fighting my first few trainers, and catching all the pokemon in these starting areas. I walk around and finally make it to Petalburg. While walking around, you'll see an NPC who mentions wally, and I'm suddenly curious. I head up to the gym, and there's my Dad. He's giving a lecture/pep talk to a kid, and finally he sees you and invites you into the gym. We're catching up, when finally Wally comes in. You really get quickly that Wally is a frail kid, and your Dad, being the cool person he is, is instantly willing to help him out. I really wish Wally catching his first pokemon was just a cinematic, and not a tutorial for catching pokemon still, but you go with Wally and I assume stand there to be encouraging. Yet he has his ralts, and he's excited and I'm genuinely excited for him. Dad thanks you for helping out, but gives you your first "quest", to head to Rustboro city and to become "stronger". And that's where I'm going to stop for now. I was originally going to write until my first gym badge, but I had a lot more to say than I thought I did about the introduction and I would like these pieces to be somewhat manageable to read. But tell me, how did you feel about the introduction the game?
The ORAS Demo
I have not done this in awhile. Mostly because of school work not because I haven't had anything to talk about. In terms of business alone, Nintendo has had an impressive year. Yet that's not what I want to talk about, today I want to talk about Pokemon. Pokemon is one of my favorite video game franchises, and has been a constant in my life ever since I was a kid. Unless you live under a rock in Antarctica, you may have heard that Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire are getting 3D remakes: Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby are coming out this Friday. The Hoenn region is my favorite, because it was my renewal back into the Pokemon series. I did play Red when I was a young child, but I never experience the original Silver/Gold/Crystal. I skipped an entire generation, I know, but that is why my copy of Pokemon Sapphire is so important. It got me back into Pokemon, and I have never missed a generation since.
Because I generally love this region so much, I've decided between my busy school work and graduation that I would essentially dive deep into Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. I'm going to look at every possible aspect of the game itself I possibly can: catch every Pokemon on every route, listen to the music deeply, go in every building, crawl through every secret nook and cranny I come across and more importantly, I'm going to write about it.
This might be personable, boring, weird and/or amazing and if you still pay attention to me on your feed: buckle in, its going to be a ride. So as an exercise for this weird project I'm forcing upon myself, I'm going to dive deep into the demo which I honestly came upon by accident this past Sunday. I went into gamestop, looking for a Diancie code, and the distracted sales associated answered "Sorry, we're all out but here's a code for the game demo". It was weird happenstance that turned out to be a positive. Until I had to download the code. For some back ground, I am in a rural college with not so great internet and I can't connect my 3DS to the internet unless I walk a block or two to the general store and use the town wi-fi. So on Monday, I walked into town in the freezing rain, and stood under a window display just to have the internet take, all why having to update my the 3DS software before I could even download the code, and a weird guy smoking next to me and trying to envoke me in conversation. Yet I finally have the demo, and now I'm going to play it **** Alright, I'm back after playing the first half, they sat there's more fun to be had at the end, but I think the quick 15 minute section I played was enough. I'm sure a lot fans are going to play the demo, and I won't spoil it for anyone who wants to download it. I will say you should, for the free mega evolution pokemon alone. I got a Glalie, which I named Wilhelm. Yet I'm getting ahead of myself. You start off on Latios, as Orlando -the main dude- and are riding with Stephen to Mossdeep city. Now before you get too excited, I tried to explore every inch of the city, but the doors were locked, and there were only a few NPC, not even any secret items were to be found in rocks or weird bushes. Yet just the 3D translation alone, and the music was AMAZING. There's a spot, right next to the laboratory, where if you stand just right, you get this awesome view of the rocket, space station and the ocean. I would recommend this if you're only interested in the story because, it is sparse and weird. Also you only have one Pokemon for the first duration, which is one of the Hoenn starts. Although now seeing the mudkip line in action, I'm more excited for him and I to be on a team. Yet as I said, no more spoilers. The only other two cool things I'd like to talk about are the buzznet and the sneaking mechanic. The buzznet is on the touch screen and is box with a news woman who is talking about tips, and events that happen in Hoenn. I'm curious what role this will have in the future, but I'm genuinely excited to experience this. The other thing in the grand scheme of all the cool things you will see will probably seem stupid, but whatever, this is personable. You can sneak. If you lightly push the control stick in the direction, your character will sneak forward, and it is hilarious. It is absolutely ridiculous and silly but I love it, and I am genuinely curious about why this motion was added, but I'm sure will be explained further. In general, it was a good toe-dipping time. It just gave you a small taste, and might be something you give to a friend or family member who has never played pokemon before so they can see all the cool stuff that could happen. For me, as a hardcore pokemon fan, I felt the demo was just a little underwhelming. There were genuinely funny moments , and I enjoyed myself, but it was not the be all-end all. In general, I'm excited to get my copy of alpha sapphire and actually experience my favorite game upgraded again.

New superhero comic, Spark!
Hey, everyone! This is the creator of Little Girls Are Better At Designing Superheroes Than You, here with a post I thought you all might like. Writer Ted Anderson and I have made a pitch for a superhero comic!
The comic is about nine-year-old Lucia Marquez-Miller, who loves engineering, and uses her telekinetic powers to build and take things apart with her mind. She calls this power her spark!
As Spark, the world’s youngest superhero, she’s a junior member of a superhero team while also trying to live a normal life. Can Lucia juggle her friends and family while also saving the world from supervillains?
We’re posting a 15-page standalone comic here on tumblr to give readers an idea of what the book would be like.

Actually catching them all
So remember when I said I would update this thing more often. It seems like usually after I say that I go on these long hiatuses. But before we get onto the main topic, somethings on the games I've been playing.
Kirby Triple Deluxe: Adorable, I really loved it; classic Kirby and a modern take.
Hearthstone: Not as addicting any more but still fun and a great time sink
Mario Kart 8: Love, love, love: I am still doing Mario Kart Mondays in my residents halls and plan on keeping it going when school officially starts in my new hall. I'm also trying to be competitive: no promises
Rune Factory 4: I like it, but the pacing seems...off. Like I feel like nothing happens and you get used to doing the farm work/royal duties and then the game tells you "By the way, go to these super hard dungeons". Maybe I need to put more time to it, but I don't know. Shovel Knight: Great, amazing and another love X 3. I know nearly everyone who plays this game loves it. I will say that it is a very challenging game. Do not play late at night, particularly if you have to go to work the next day. It's one of those games you devote an entire session to.
Now to the actual point of the vlog. So I've been watching Justin Flynn lately, specifically his shiny hunting streams. I want to hunt shinies now. Unfortunately to do that effectively, I need to start completing the national dex and get a shiny charm. So to help with that here is my plan. I, confusedbard, am sending out Pokemon on Wonder trade with Shakespeare names. A majority of them may be ralts, but they aren't bad ralts. But I am as we speak going to the name rater and naming all the pokemon I'm going to trade after characters from a complete works of Shakespeare. So look forward to that if you are wonder trading any time between 6:30- 40 EST, M-F. Maybe more Saturday/Sunday
