I am so excited to introduce this product to my clients! I have been doing a ton of research trying to find a product that is not only great for the environment, it is also amazing on the hair! PPD free hair color and how to find it.

I have been doing some research on PPD or better known as p-phenylenediamine. PPD is (taken directly from the Condensed Chemical dicitionary) derivation: reduction of p-dinitrobenzene or nitroanilne with iron and hydrochloric acid. Purified by crystallization. Grade: technical, 99% purity. Hazard: toxic by ingestion and inhalation, strong irritant to skin. 

Use: Azo-dye, intermediate, photographic developing agent, photochemical measurements, intermediate in manufacture of antioxidants and accelerators for rubber, synthetic fibers, laboratory reagent, dyeing hair and fur. 

Not the best chemical/ organic to use. 

I started my research years ago and found that Chi (Farouk systems) is PPD free and have used it for years on clients that have that allergy or sensitivity. I am not a big fan of it, the grey coverage is not super yet it works. My clients can color their hair and not have any issues. Pictured is the silver box on top of my chemical dictionary that is the CHI color ingredients. Notice it is PPD free. So now my dilemma... something in this color is causing an allergic reaction on a client. UGHHHH!!! What do i do? I ask Dr. Google about PPD free color lines. Found a couple of professional hairdresser only companies that list they are. ( I am waiting on ingredient lists and possibly will purchase product to try on client.) Next step was Whole Foods, they have to have a color that would work. I have seen the boxes, just never paid any attention. Well what do you know, the other two pictures are of color lines carried by Whole Foods and they have PPD in their ingredients! I was so amazed and then I went “no don’t be amazed” PPD is a natural derivative. Therefore can be used in Organic or Natural haircolor lines.

I truly believe consumers are becoming more and more blind to marketing. I believe that many consumers or so blinded by the “Certified Organic or Natural label” that they don’t go any further to research the ingredients. I can’t understand why the consumer would not  research, Arsenic is natural yet we don’t drink it everyday.  

I have ordered a color line called Simply Organic and now to test on a few clients to see if the coverage is great. I may be switching to a healthier line for everyone.
