Hikaru crosses his arms, tapping his right forearm with his left fingers with a frown as he listens to Naruki, and eventually nods slowly as he finishes.
āā¦Yeah, I suppose so. Itāsā¦growing up, things werenāt so easy. My dads were never well off, things were hard. They both worked themselves to the bone for my sake, soā¦from the moment I was old enough I knew I had to pay them back.ā
ā¦
āā¦One of my dads, heāsā¦heās in prison right now. For stopping an attempt on my life, he killed the person who wanted toā¦to kill me. Because I was successful, because I was becoming a better journalist than him.ā
āā¦Itās hard to trust people, Iāve gotten so used to the headspace of a journalist, and things are justā¦easier if Iām working. The more money I make the more comfortable my dad back home is, and I can ensure once my other dad is out of prison they have a great retirement. Andā¦when Iām working, I donāt think as much I guess. If Iām focusing on the problems of others, if Iām focusing on being productive, if Iām justā¦getting a story, and forgetting my own story, then itās easier to get by.ā
āā¦Itās better than feeling useless. Itās better than having to think about how the people who did everything to give me a good life even now suffer day in and day out for me, because of me. I need to be the bestā¦I need to pay them back. I canāt ever do things halfway, they deserve all I can giveā¦ā
Hikaru sighs, looking away, a bit sombre and a bit embarrassed by his own rambling.
āā¦I donāt really tell people about myself, but I guess I can tell you wouldnāt see any reason to spread it, or use it against me. You arenāt like the people I work withā¦ā
āMmm⦠looks like we arenāt too different on that front. Family also had a bit of money problems which is why I took up internships and work to help cover their debts and since that was really the only way I couldāve contributed at the time. Taking every little thing about my job so seriously was what wound me out of commission for a while though⦠So I just focus on making the most use out of the little time I have to get things done without overworking myself into an early grave while making sure my colleagues donāt needa deal with anything like that either.ā
Naruki straightens his posture a slight bit while he nods along though.
āBut yikes⦠I personally never had to deal with anything like that, but Iām sorry with what you were dealt with.ā
To be honest, he was rather curious on how Hikaru hasnāt had any news broken about him regarding any attacks despite his nature in the type of job he worked, but at least that solved his answer.
āWell If this happens to end smoothly somehow, chances are that Iād have no reason to spread something like that around. Hearing gossip is already exhausting enough, so I dunno why Iād spread the word myself.ā
Hikaru manages a small, genuine smile. Itās such a rare look on his face, to see him smile without smugness or taunting.
ā...Thanks. Youāre...Youāre alright, Naruki. I guess...ā
Hikaru looks away, coughing slightly. Maybe in a different circumstance, maybe if Hikaru had his shit together a bit more, heād consider prodding a little here for...something. But as it stands, Hikaru is happy to just slump further into his chair, feeling the stress dispel from his body as he has finally shared his burdens with another person, for once.
āWell, maybe we could both learn a thing or two from each other, hm? For one, maybe I could teach you how to make a proper coffee!ā
Hikaru holds up his cup of coffee with a small laugh, itās clearly spoken in jest.
