Motherly talk

“It’s not what you think!” Jemma replied hastily, and then she became horribly aware that for one, she didn’t know what she wanted May to think, and two, she wasn’t sure it wasn’t. On the other hand, she could have just snapped at May and told her it wasn’t her business, because she never had to respond to anyone about her personal life, not even her actual parents; but then, she wanted to have a relationship of some sort with May, they were friends, May was even a mentor, and she didn’t want to fight. It was so complicated. She met May’s eyes again, “We are not dating.” But if we were, I’d be the lucky one, she wanted to add, feeling more protective as each passing second. “We are friends, May. And yes, we also sleep together.”
May didn’t know what to say to Jemma. A part of her knew she should care because Jemma could make her own life choices but there was another part that was disappointed in her. She really shouldn’t care –– it’s not like she was her mother.
“So you’re in a friends with benefits relationship?” she asked and then pursed her lips tightly together as she looked deeply into her friends eyes. “Jemma –– I just don’t want to see you get hurt. Things like this never turn out well.”
What if she started to become romantically attached to Hunter over time and he didn’t feel the same way? She would hate to see her friend’s heart shatter into a million pieces.
