Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

BUNS UPDATE, BUNS UPDATE, WOO WOO, BUNS UPDATE‼️I cannot believe I'm putting a comment under this horse dookie that's not in the tags, but this change is so stupid that I had to let it out. What the hell does this serve to any of the users on this platform other than to isolate and discourage communities from talking or allowing them to grow? As other people mentioned, encouraging harassment campaigns? Encouraging the paranoia of your posts being taken from out of your hands? Discouraging artists from reaching out to their audience? Encouraging monetization in order to even get a reach around tumblr?? I thought these were updates to fix or improve things, not updates from the demolition crew.

Rank ass update, please revert this. Tumblr users are dramatic, no doubt, but this is bonafied ass built directly into a single update. This is why I use extensions to fix some of this, but even then, everything is bandages and duct-tape on a broken down car rusting from the inside

Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost

Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!

It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.

I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?

How many relationships? How much writing?

You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.

Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!

I write stories on discord, and would be devastated if someone happened to them. You have to have your own local copies of every file you care about.

There's a post I keep seeing go around that's like, "quick, list five things you like that aren't a piece of media," and every time I see it, I get the very petty urge to respond with, "teaching media literacy, studying media history, analyzing media, using media as a lens to study historical trends, and finding ways to connect people's interest in pop culture to important social issues."

I have plenty of hobbies that aren't media-related, sure. I love my garden, my pets, baking, and sewing. I just get rather tired of "media is evil, actually, and if you're really into it is is actually rotting your stupid little brain" rhetoric. If your goal is to get people to broaden their horizons and engage in multiple hobbies beyond passive media engagement, leading with shame (and social media posts that function as OCD traps) is a BAD FUCKING APPROACH. Shame is not a motivator. Shame only serves to condescend and shut people down.

This week I'm working on lesson plans to lead a six-week class on media literacy skills for a pack of homeschoolers. What the fuck kind of teacher would I be if I used an approach of "you're stupid for liking cartoons, go do something WORTHWHILE!" instead of "let's develop these skills by talking about a piece of media you already enjoy!"

To say nothing of the fact that this is the fandom and media website. This is literally where people come to engage with their fandom/media hobby. It's a cow farm, there are going to be cows outside. If that's not how YOU use tumblr, that's fine, but let's not pretend like "people into fandom" isn't a core demographic that this site actively markets itself toward. If you see someone being over-the-top about a piece of media, it's a fool's conclusion that they clearly must never log off and only ever do fandom stuff.
