"You will be remembered as a hero" is still a line that makes me want to rip my hair out and scream. Grace never asked to be a hero. Grace never asked to be "remembered" at his young age. Grace was a civillian middle school teacher with no preparation to go on a suicide mission. Grace gave a clear and confident "no". There is no amount of statues of him raised or flower shrines or little chapters in history books dedicated to him or patron saint titles he could've been given that would change the fact he would die alone in a small box in the void of space, swallowing pills or putting bullet in his head because its better option than slowly succumbing to starvation. Spending last of his days saving the world he will never get to see again. "This isn't me betraying you, this is me believing in you." This is you betraying him. He didn't ask for anyone to believe in him, he asked to live. You made a life ending choice for him. You were murdering him. And you had to. I understand. It was hardly your choice to make in the first place when the fate of mankind was at stake. But that decision was never even remotely for the benefit of Grace. Don't lie to him. The least he deserves is to be dignified with the truth.

Okay I know we’re all horrified at the fact that Grace was drugged & sent to space against his will but I’m going to be honest. I think Stratt was right??

It was incredibly selfish of Grace to refuse. Yes, consent is important, and not wanting to die is a basic human need, but he was the best option. It was what, nine days to launch? Two weeks, maximum? That’s not enough time for someone to become an expert in Astrophage, and Grace was probably the only expert!!!

Stratt was weighing and mitigating every single risk. The risk of putting people in a coma vs keeping them awake, the risk of designing zero gravity technology vs creating gravity, the risk of throwing the planet into global warming to buy some time. She is not going to gamble the fate of the planet on a stranger!!

In the book, Stratt does not tell Grace he “doesn’t even have a dog.” She doesn’t imply your life is worthless because you aren’t married with kids. No, she says “you are a coward.” She says do not lie to me and say it’s about the kids, if you cared about those kids you would get on that ship.

I love Grace. I love Grace dearly. But I think because he is the main character and everyone’s tragic blorbo we villainize Stratt far too much.

Yes, one woman should not be able to decide the fate of one man.

But one man should not be able to decide the fate of the entire world.

i think that you can make the argument that Stratt made the best decision that she was able to make at the time. and hindsight being what it is, she’d do it again if she had to.

what it was decidedly NOT, however, was the moral decision. and frankly, it does her character a disservice to try and claim it was.

yes, it was a short time until launch. but why couldn’t they have pushed the launch date? “well, they were running out of time to solve the problem” - i mean, yes and no. sending an unwilling person into space is a much riskier play than waiting a month to assemble a new team of scientists (there are no astrobiologists left in the WHOLE WORLD? not even students at the top of their respective classes, ANYwhere? i highly doubt that) and having Grace get them up to speed. how do you guarantee Grace is going to cooperate? how do you know he’s not gonna snap up there and off the whole team and then himself?

the mission itself as it was originally planned was, genuinely, much less of a hail mary than the act of drugging Grace and shooting him up into the stars.

the morality of body autonomy and consent isn’t up for debate. Grace saying no wasn’t him deciding the fate for the entire world - it was him trying to decide his own fate. Stratt saying “your no doesn’t matter in the face of humanity’s oblivion” wasn’t heroic. it was hasty, immoral, and also a little bit selfish. she was experiencing both the trolley problem and sunk-cost fallacy in real time. it was a hail mary because the cost of failure was too high for her - it was selfish.

as someone who genuinely adores Stratt, all these things make her a deeply compelling character. i love that she’s allowed to be rigid and unmoving in this. i love that she’s flawed. i love that she’s dedicated to what she believes is the right call, but also seems to personally acknowledge the immorality of her decision. i love that Grace will haunt her forever, and i think deep down she’d love it too. she’d know that was her price to pay.

when it all comes down to it, Grace said no because he didn’t want to die. but Stratt ignored his no and marched him off like a lamb to be slaughtered at the altar of the sun god because she didn’t want to die, either.

Finally saw Project Hail Mary, it was fantastic, held up to all my expectations and then some. But I will say Grace is a better person than me for many reasons. But mostly because I would've included at least one "Eva you can go rot, fuck you forever" in that message. But of course he wouldn't do that, hes not a hold on to grudges type. But I can't relate even a little, you fuck me over to that extent, I will hold that grudge until I die. Even if it worked out and was for "the greater good", it's the fact that you did it at all.
