As controversial as this may be, hopefully this will put today into some context.

Lando had a 5 second penalty to serve. All Max had to do was stay within 5 seconds of him.

At 60m Max has left over a car’s width and Lando is beside him with the stronger run out of the corner. At 30m Lando is 3/4 alongside him and Max turns in front of Lando despite the corner going in the opposite direction.

A smart driver would have taken option 1.

A clean driver would not have considered option 2.

A great driver would not then have tried to push someone off the track when they themself have a puncture. They would be ensuring they got out of the way of any approaching cars. And that’s the action that makes it hard to defend it wasn’t intentional.

It boils down to. There was zero need for Max to do what he did. He could have backed out of the corner and still won the race. And only one person made that decision.

I think Max fans are so busy trying to defend his actions they miss that fact.
