her voice is so emotive in this song that I can taste the wine, and man is it as heady as she makes it out to be.
for some reason listening to The Cure just made me realized I pretty much like everything dark in some way, like my last name, so as usual the answer to “wait, why am I like this?” is literally “blame the parents.”
Liberal MP, Celina Caesar-Chavannes made a statement in Canada’s House of Commons recently about body shaming, and particularly about natural hair shaming that Black people experience.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT
Of constant fascination for me are the ways in which literature employs skin color to reveal character or drive narrative.
a most interesting article from one of the first black authors I ever read. cherish your high school English teachers.
can’t believe i slept on this for a month
I am so tired of seeing the word millennials in every other article. Will somebody come up with a Chrome extension that’ll replace it with something less grating and overused―just for a little while―like wizkids or technowizards or even just wizards?
i’ve been feelin’ down a bit here and there and this made my day.

when a thing you loved as a kid and a thing you love as an adult collide in the most perfect, harmonious, and obvious way, it feels like maybe someday things will be okay ---an accidental poem

is such a phenomenal show! EXCLAMATION ONE 1 ! What a nice thing to learn while all the universes are smashing repeatedly and wholeheartedly into one another.
I’m beyond excited to see Moses Sumney next week at Prospect Park. I saw him perform as an opener for Blood Orange in Central Park some years ago and it may have been overall the best concert I’ve ever been to. And he was so good back then, I can only imagine how glorious it must be to see him play now.
EDIT: IT WAS GLORIOUS.
In 1840, Edgar Allan Poe described the ‘mad energy’ of an ageing man who roved the streets of London from dusk till dawn. His excruciating despair could be temporarily relieved only by immersing himself in a tumultuous throng of city-dwellers. ‘He...
This article includes a really good explanation for why self-reflection is extremely important, as much for oneself as for interpersonal relationships and the good/betterment of society. It led me to conclude that for some of us, it is when we encounter the (somehow still) shocking and constantly unsettling dearth of imagination, empathy, compassion, etc., in others that’s been cultivated and fostered in us that we opt to fall behind a shield of self-imposed solitude. If we are not mindful of the barrier or become too battered to go without, and we begin to retreat too often and/or for too long, it becomes a counterintuitively burdensome weight of angry and/or hopeless thoughts and feelings about all kinds of injustices, and we descend into cycles of high-functioning mental and emotional disorders and distress. Especially now that it seems the world is spiraling off its axis more and more each day, we have to collectively use this ability for contemplation not as proverbial bubble wrap but as fortification, and as a lovingly polished weapon.
I also watched an interesting doc on empathy. It made the concept and banality of evil all the more insidious and upsetting---one of those things that giveth and taketh away hope in equal amounts, i.e., the catch-22 of watching documentaries, like life itself. Now I know the subconscious reason why I consciously avoided them for so long.
Long story short, brains and minds are nuts, and it’s important to find the right balance of being for being inside and outside of oneself. That’s what I’m doing now. I hope---and hope again that I’m not using up my quota of the word---that people can find the strength to do the same.
This will be me when I finally learn to drive.
This is the first song I added to my biking playlist and it was totally by chance.
