Hi Elanor! I’m seeing Steffan at the Fringe today because you recommended it and your Big Dog recaps etc got me through some of the lockdowns (I’m from Melbourne, Australia, we had the longest covid lockdowns in the world, wooooo go us). I’m looking forward to the show! Are you hanging around Edinburgh for any of the run?

I'll be up from the 21st until the end, so I imagine we'll miss each other. But, I'm delighted my silly observations of the fall of the Tory party was useful, lol.

i love Not to jump the gun here but with rozanov’s permission…? i think shane in that scene was feeling fiercely protective over another person for the first time in his life. so bowled over by the intensity of his own emotions that he stumbled back to his hotel room in a daze and immediately jerked off in the shower about it. “what if rozanov got arrested and i had to use my immense hockey wealth to bail him out of jail and it was winter in boston. so he had hypothermia. and he had to live with me while we sorted out the legal situation and i yelled at journalists for him and helped him with his paperwork and hired the best lawyer in the world and nursed him back to health and he was like “hollander……..you saved my life 🥺” and he fucked me soooo hard every night for stress relief (obviously he couldn’t fuck other people. due to the lawsuit) and we fell asleep in each other’s arms afterwards. because there’s only one bed in my apartment and he’s too tall for the couch” stuff like that. normal fantasies

During a game the Jumbotron falls and Shane is still underneath it when it begins plummeting to the ground. Ilya doesn’t have time to think about, just moves across the ice and tackles them both out of the way in time. Ilya shields Shane from potential debris and lays on top of him protectively until everything settles.

He pushes up but still remains on top of him, asking if Shane is hurt. Shane shakes his head. No, he doesn’t think he is. He asks the same to Ilya, can't help but put his hands on him as he asks-- cradling his face-- but Ilya's alright too. Neither got hit with anything. They’re both okay.

The Jumbotron falling makes headlines because fucking duh. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, although some of the players got bumps and bruises from falling bits but nothing horrific. Everyone was able to skate out of the way. No one got crushed. No one got killed.

The moment with Shane and Ilya gets talked about too. It goes viral, even outside of the sports sphere. There’s all different sorts of angles of it, even multiple close up shots from the photographers and fans that were there during the event.

People speak about the humanity shown bc even with the rivalry, their first instincts were to hold onto each other during a horrifying brush with death. People talk about how Ilya had been safely out of the way before he put himself in danger to make sure Shane was out of the way too.

Yuna Hollander becomes Rozanov’s biggest fan after that. He saved her son. She reaches out to Rozanov herself to invite him to a dinner, which Ilya accepts because it would be rude to decline. After that-- Yuna and David practically adopt Ilya having no idea about the relationship he has with their son. Maybe Yuna even becomes Ilya's manager when she realizes Ilya's own team has been taking advantage of him.

Okay justice for Ilya Rozanov, a man who notably managed his entire families finances and his dementia-having fathers caretaking since he was literally a teenager, while also essentially raising himself to be an elite, generational athlete by himself.

Honestly imagine being the first team to go against the Centaurs after the Hollanov join. You face the first line and there's an Ilya Rozanov who is married, happy, medicated, moisturised, well fucked, woke up to his husband's freckles before his eyes and his dog's weight on his feet first thing this morning, had mind-blowing shower sex and then cuddled for an hour while having breakfast. He's at his peak the way no one has peaked before. What can they do with that???? No one has ever had to deal with that before????? What the fuck was that???????

And then the second line arrives and there's Hollander and you think yeah ok Hollander we know Hollander he's going to be difficult but come on we know Hollander and then they're wrong. So wrong. This Shane Hollander is happy, out of the closet, married, with a team that loves and supports him for who he is, living his best life ever in every way. He got fucked three ways to Sunday in his trophy room last night, that lazy thrust where Ilya is so deep inside him and barely moves and rubs all the rights places and Shane comes at least 3 times, he woke up to his husband kissing his freckles this morning and spent an hour cuddling and having the best breakfast yogurt bowl ever because his husband made it for him, after having the best shower sex ever. Peak isn't even enough to define what state Shane Hollander is in. This is beyond human. He's playing a game but they're not sure it's even hockey. No one has ever met this Shane Hollander, no one fucking knows how to deal with this.

The other team leaves the Centaur arena with the shell shocked look of war prisoners. They sit before the press on the media room and they ask "what happened tonight" and they're like "good question, I would like to know too". The entirety of the NHL is sitting on their couches silently staring at the TV because fuuuuuuuuck they have to deal with that. They have to play that.

Let's just say many teams' therapists receive a lot of calls that night.

“Sorry,” Ilya says hoarsely, after texting Shane for the second time that day requesting medication. He’s sprawled in bed, a raging fever having completely knocked him on his ass and even stopped him from playing a game the day before. 

Shane, who doesn’t mind playing nurse at all, stops at his boyfriend’s mumbled words, pills and cup of water in hand, giving him a truly mystified expression. “What? Why?”

It looks like it takes all of Ilya’s available energy to pull the English words from his lips. Sitting up, he gestures for the pills. “For…being bother,” he grumbles, eyes cast downward. “I am baby when I am sick.”

Which…is fine. Shane gets truly miserable when, on rare occasions, he gets sick. Stuffed noses and tight breathing are absolute sensory nightmares for him, so he knows he’s insufferable in those instances. He can understand when people aren’t their best when ill.

But Ilya’s been fine. Just laying in bed, drinking his water, sleeping and playing on his phone. Not a single complaint or request, aside from a need for medication. He even sent Shane away, not wanting him to get sick as well.

“Ilya…what the fuck? You’ve been fine,” he says firmly, moving onto the bed and looking the other man in the eye. 

“I am not…too much?”

This is what makes Shane move forward and pull Ilya into an embrace, despite his own misgivings and Ilya’s earlier protests. This, and a sudden picture in his mind of a fourteen-year-old Ilya sick in bed with nobody to care for him. A sixteen-year-old Ilya shivering and cold, with nobody to hold him. An eighteen-year-old Ilya alone at home, even when he needed someone to help him. 

And when Shane does hold him, the giant, muscled Russian man gives off the smallest whimper. It makes Shane’s heart break. “Baby…whatever you need. I’m here,” Shane reminds him softly, pressing a kiss to his head.

Arms wind around Shane’s waist, pulling him close. They stay that way for the rest of the night.

my hot take of the day is that ilya actually runs a tighter ship than shane, not like as captain or anything i mean in the household.

1) afraid of being lazy 2) military son 3) slavic. shane has certain preferences for things sensory wise which is why he is neat abt his stuff, ilya will kill himself & everyone in the room there's a Difference. iykyk

I love this little detail that when Shane gets closer to Ilya's heart, his hand slowly and unintentionally crawls to his cross, and the moment his finger almost touches it Ilya leans back, distancing himself. It is such a tiny moment that you can overlook especially since you're focused on the gentle forehead kiss, but I believe it is so symbolic for them.

i wanna read a fic with ilya being like “uh no but fr hayden is being shitty about us being together” and shane is halfheartedly like “yeahhhhh but yknow it’s hard bc he’s my friend and ur my rival so he feels like i should’ve told him and he still kinda hates you anyways” and ilya goes “ok but marlow is in that exact same position and he is thrilled for me and wants details and is teasing me for being in looooove and wants to meet you for drinks and become friends with you so. what’s pike’s excuse.” and shane says “hey that’s right! wtf pike!” and then hayden can get his head out of his ass and realize he’s terrible and try to do better OR he can fall out of a hot air balloon onto a thousand swords, i’m open to either ending :)
