Comercial

This is my commercial for my final garment, which can be viewed on my youtube along with the making version of my final garment which shows the process.

I wanted to evoke a theme of romance, royalty and joy throughout the commercial, and I feel that the atmosphere at Cannon Hall allowed me to create that.

Here is what has been created to showcase my work as a whole, explaining the brief and the aspects of my designs and final piece.

It was edited by my teacher to give it more sophistication, but overall I feel it is very deep and effective

My final designs

Here are my final 10 stylised designs. I experimented with a mixed media of; watercolour paints, pro markers and gel pens.

I wanted to have a continuous colour palette of colours often seen in the Georgian period. Most of my designs resemble that of the Rococo period with aspects of The Duchess film mixed in. However, I did create 3 burgundy pieces which really contrast the pastel blues and pinks, and resemble that of a Georgian army jacket. And for my backgrounds I have combined flowers from the Chatsworth gardens along with snippets of my existing mood boards created in my sketchbook.

Overall, I am pleased with the way they have come out and I think that my design boards look more effective than they did for my unit 2.

My design boards

For my design boards, I decided to test out multiple different ways of presentation but I settled for the final image.

I created these by combining drawings of flowers found in the Chatsworth Gardens as well as sections of mood-boards from my sketchbook.

Commercial filming

Thanks to my good friend, I was able to create lots of footage to use in my upcoming commercial, I will be editing them and adding music to make an aesthetically pleasing commercial. I am really excited to create it as I get to show my progress and my final piece, which I am really proud of.

I will also be creating one showing the process of making this garment and my drawn collection.

Photoshoot

I had a wonderful time taking photos at Cannon Hall, the day was beautiful and I felt beautiful.

I think the photos came out really well, I took many but these were by far my favourites.

Photoshoot preparation

Today I practiced my hair and makeup for my photoshoot.

The look I was aiming for was that of a Georgian aristocrat, mixing aspects of rococo and also some soft pastels and adding a more exaggerated modern twist. I didn’t want my makeup to remain entirely traditional, but I wanted to keep the basic pale complexion, heavy blush and a beauty mark. I also wanted to add a pop of pale blue eyeshadow to give my makeup some vibrancy.

As for accessories, I wanted to go all out. I will be incorporating; pearl necklaces, bracelets, earrings and hair pins, ribbons in my hair and around my neck, a lace fan, and a pair of lace gloves. My shoes are also decorated with lace and bows to really tie in my rococo theme.

My final garment : Georgiana

My garment has now been completed, and I am completely satisfied with my results. All my doubts that I had about my dress ‘not looking quite right’ have completely vanished and I am really proud of myself.

I decided to name my garment ‘Georgiana’ after Georgiana Cavendish, as I thought that even though it was predictable and mediocre it really fit the dress and tied in with my theme, connecting it back to my film.

I will now be pressing it and getting it prepared for my photoshoot in 3 days.

Decorations and details

The decorative techniques I decided to use for this piece were; a decorative print (taken from Cannon Hall), pearl beading, ruched panelling and ruched diagonal panels.

All of these pieces I feel came out extremely well and I am really proud of how I have done, I feel that the decorations really tie the whole piece together and make it look great.

Creating my skirt

I found my skirt relatively easy to create separately, due to me only having to sew in straight lines. However, when it came to sewing them together as well as creating gathers, that’s where I ran into many issues.

One of my problems appeared when attempting to attach my gathered skirts to my bodice. I wasn’t able to do a good job the first time around as many gathers and stitching was visible when turning the garment the right way round, which was really wrong. But eventually, it was corrected with some help from my teacher.

I find that I know exactly what to do, it is just in that moment in time the fabric doesn’t want to cooperate.

My finished bodice

This is my final bodice look, I am really happy with the way it has turned out and I can’t wait to complete my skirt and attach it together.

I found most difficulties in putting the sleeves on which I had to have assistance with, but other than that I think I was able to create this bodice with relative ease. I will be adding a trimming around the top panel to add some extra texture, and some pearls amongst the print.

Photoshoot and model pose mood boards

Here are my pose ideas and the general theme I am aiming to create for my final garment photoshoot. The photoshoot will be set at Cannon Hall and will consist of photos taken within and throughout the gardens focusing on floral landscapes and flowing grass as well as ornate halls and the ballroom.

Beginning my bodice

When beginning my bodice in my final fabric, I was extremely nervous as to not make a mistake due to limited supplies. I did have some doubts about my colour scheme as I felt that the pink was a bit bright and that I should have gone for a more muted colour palette, but as I progressed I ended up growing to like the way it looked and I felt it went together well with the print I had created.

I felt that applying the sleeves was one of the hardest aspects as I couldn’t sew them in without tucks being created and it was really frustrating, so I was able to have a little help from my teachers after I had tried 3 or 4 different ways.

Printing my fabric

With the help of the people in the digital art department, I was able to print my desired print onto my final patterns. I found this an extremely stressful experience as I feared that my print would not turn out the way I had expected. But in the end, I quite like the look of the design and I think it came out well.

The steps for this process are;

- Scan the print on the photocopier and send it to the digital printer,

- Place the fabric on the printer bed and position it where you want the print,

- Press the button and begin the printing,

- Once the printing is complete, use a hot press for 45 seconds to set the ink.

My final print pattern

This is the print design that I have settled on for my final garment. I have created it through looking into different aspects of cannon hall glasswork pieces, I have mixed the leaf style reeds with a Georgian style floral appearance so it keeps in theme with my era. I also feel that it resembles some of the floral looks that Georgiana wore in the film. I also altered it slightly from my original design so that it would match the colour palette of my dress more.

It took me several attempts to come up with a layout that I liked the look of. I tested out many sizes ranging between 25% and 50% smaller, and I had to print many off so that au could rearrange them to photocopy. But in the end I settled on this distorted line at a reduced size of 50% which I really like.
