'Scuze me?
Zoe + instagram pt. 2Ā
Oh- sorry, no! I was just studying the spray paint on the wall over there.
[Ruby laughs] You're welcome for that!
Oh - Nope, I guess I just zoned out a little. Thanks!
No problem, dude.
[Ruby's hanging out her window when she sees someone standing idly on the street in front of her Inner City apartment] You lost, kid?
"Summer is probably my favorite season just because all the stores mark down their sweaters really cheap."
But it's also, you know, gross.
Improv class? Hm, never got that one before.Ā
Unfortunately, no, Iām not one for theatre and all that. The most improvising Iāve ever done is musical, I more than capable of striking up notes than words.Ā
So you sing. Of course. Probably one of those douche bags sitting with a guitar in the shade waiting for girls to flock to him.
Yeah, who has time for that shit? All right, no messing around, then. Iām Patrick.Ā
Ruby. Pleasure.
Are we really gonna do this?Ā
Like come on, Iām gonna run out of lines any second now.Ā
So you've been rehearsing? Am I your practice target for some sort of improv class?
Thatās good to know. You donāt mess around, do you?
I'm not exactly a messing around type of girl.
Thank you, I promise it wonāt happen again. Thank you for pointing it out, I wonder how many other people Iāve accidentally started at.Ā
Of course. Hopefully not too many.
You donāt sound convinced.Ā
I rarely ever am.
Oh..uh..I apologise. I think I zoned out there for a bit, didnāt mean to stare.
Apology accepted, then.
March 21, 1995
"Can we get ice cream, now?"
"Shut up, would you, darling?"
Ruby stops. Hands crossed across her chest. She is seven years old, and has only recently grown big enough to scare away pigeons. One pecks its way toward her. She tries her very hardest to pay it no mind.
"Come on, baby. It's the middle of March."
"Yeah, and Annie's Diner just got a new soft serve machine."
"I gotta take you somewhere, alright? Afterward, we can get french fries and ice cream and everything. Sound good?"
"I guess."
At least the record shop was warm. Warehouse-sized. but they had heat. The stacks of albums were taller than Ruby was, and it made her grumble.
Ava perused for what seemed like centuries for her daughter. Ruby's hair was done up in braids that she kept pretending to get caught between records to see if her mother would notice. When she did, she simply laughed.
"Promise me something, baby."
Ruby huffed. "Depends."
Ava laughed at the look on her face. "Promise me you'll play good music at my funeral. Alright?"
Ruby smiled. "Course." After a moment, she looked up in thought. "I already have some ideas. You'll have to hurry up."
Iām clean, I swear. Want me to clear out my pockets? Iām pretty sure I have, like, three dollars and a stick of gum.
I believe you, I believe you.
Hey, now, I swear Iām not creepyā¦which is probably exactly what a creeper would say.
You're only getting more suspicious by the moment.
