soichiro asked, afterwards, if he could just scribble over his face instead. L said no. of course he said no. so here he is, using scissors to cut himself out of each picture in their family photo album — it would be easier to burn the whole thing, safer, but he’s selfish and he doesn’t want to lose the memories even in absentia. there’s a growing pile of soichiros next to him, younger versions of himself with easy smiles. here’s a picture from when he got promoted. here’s a picture from his wedding. here’s him holding light for the first time — he remembers how sachiko looked even though she’s not in the frame. she’d been exhausted. her grip on his hand was iron.

he’d told sachiko beforehand, what he was about to do to the photos. he waited for her to shout at him or demand a divorce or hide their album somewhere he couldn’t reach. hoped, maybe. stop me. don’t let me do this to us.

she smiled at him, sad. “of course, darling.”

soichiro closes the photo album. he has successfully excised himself from the history of everyone he has ever loved. the little cut-out faces go into the fire.

still thinking about that bit in htr where ohba says if soichiro had lived then light wouldn’t be able to kill him and so the 13 day rule would be disproven… can you imagine. can you imagine looking your child in the eye and knowing that 1) he is the mass murderer you have been chasing for five years 2) the only reason you’ve caught him is because he loved you too much

i don't like writing fic for a series before i feel like i have a good enough grasp on the characters but i do find it useful to keep a scrap note full of little pieces of nebulous bullshit as an exercise in getting to know them. you know
