disliking taylors new album and reading y’alls thinkpieces about how we just need to take this idea into consideration and then listen again and unpack that idea and listen again and accusing us of hating fun and pop music and not being good fans or not truly understanding taylors previous work and you need to re listen to all of her old albums and then listen to tloas again but also disregard all her previous work to really get it and blah blah blah rly has given me a new perspective on why ppl hate swifties so much lmao
and it’s like. no, i get it. i understood the album. i understood what she was trying to do. i also didn’t like it and thought it was poor work from her.
getting the ttpd set in hd is SPECTACULAR for editors. god fucking bless
I think the most fair comparison we can do to really take a look on the lyrics of tloas and the storytelling is paris vs honey ( or any song on tloas but honey is the one that im having a hard time to consider as a romantic song ) those two songs are both considered a little cringey glittery pen songs , but the difference is that paris actually tells you a story or at least there is a progression through the song , the lyrics on the first verse make sense when you listen to the second verse , (especially the part where she changed “drew a map” to “WE drew a map” and so many other examples ) those lyrics show progression in the story and gives a meaning to the song that what she wrote on the bridge is happening that the love interest is with her in this imagination and they turned it into a reality , unlike honey that feels almost like its lyrics that describe random thoughts about her man , in the beginning ( im not even talking about how mad i am over calling other women bitches because the man looked at her wrong!) she is like talking about times people called her those names in a passive aggressive way , then in the second verse she moved to a man that called her late night asking her what she is wearing ? And then a random part about playing house that doesnt relate to the idea that the song suppose to represent ? I struggle to see a story here or even a concept , it seems more like she is writing around the idea of him changing her perspective over things but i didnt get this from the lyrics as much as i got this from the way she explained the song ?! As a listener i should at least feel like the lyrics make sense after hearing the song ! especially if its a glittery pen song that is not that deep and the lyrics doesnt even describe the concept its just her saying he calls me cute things and he means it and we make love all over the place ! To me this album really lacks the story telling and concept , those songs are based mostly on her thoughts and randoms lyrics which i dont mind if the writing is good but its not , and a pop love song should be relatable to people and make me feel that spark between them but those songs especially opalite and honey doesnt give me the spark feeling at all , she is someone who always wrote the physical side of the relationship as holy ( guilty as sin , dress and false god) so she can write it in a fun way too without giving the listener unwanted visuals of his magic wand ? At least give us relatable visuals to the act it self to the romanticism of it 😭, but she choose to rush the writing knowing that those songs are lyrics that rhyme but its so shallow and superficial ( sadly with hints of misogyny )
omg I love this paris appreciation because I really love that song!! it's so fun and lighthearted but still without fail every time I listen I am swept up in the feeling of being so in love that I might stop breathing and wanting to confess my truth in swooping sloping cursive letters (my taylor love song playlist is called "so in love that I might stop breathing 💘" for this reason)
I agree with this comparison with honey, but paris actually immediately came to mind for me compared with wish list. because they both have one of taylor's recurring love song themes ("I want to escape the rest of the world and just be with you") with a happy ultra-pop slant, but whilst paris opens with this modern celebrity gossip situation, we are immediately transported by that first "I'm so in love that I might stop breathing" and that's where we stay for the rest of the song, which is all dedicated to the way this love makes her feel and how she wants to experience it. whereas wish list doesn't really bring anything new in terms of sound or topic and manages to make it feel less romantic by dedicating both verses and pre-choruses to what other people are doing (and like you say, it's the same on honey — instead of staying in that loved up feeling we keep coming back to the "bitch" (ew) and the people in the bathroom and the guy calling late at night)
Uncomfortable with the post i've seen circulating calling people crazy for seeing dogwhistles in showgirl. Its sooooo out of line to get angry with fellow humans living in this political climate for feeling distrustful of someone willing to show up and continue to be seen with the Mahomeses. Idk how to end this statement other than yeah i liked showgirl yeah i understand why some folks are uncomfortable or angry with various aspects and "you're crazy for seeing bigotry in xyz media" is never ever going to be a statement im comfortable making of someone else even if im a fan of said media.
Do I think Taylor is hosting Klan meetings? No. Do I think Taylor has the same unconscious biases that many humans in the USA have, and that those might show through in her music? Yes!

I don’t think it is. The hand angle looks weird but I was able to replicate the pose with my own hand at a similar angle. I think it’s lit in a very particular way but it’s not AI.

there’s something deeply twisted about how this album has basically no information about why she loves this man and what about their life together enriches her right now, and how one of the tracks basically goes “it’s okay! this whole relationship is a synthetic imitation of a real gemstone that’s been manufactured for costume jewelry and display! I’m so much happier now under my simulated moonstone sky than I ever was with real opal eyes (Ivy) or real moonstone aura (Bejeweled)!”
now this may be controversial but I really feel like people should be like twice as loud about the maga friends as they were about matty. like to be clear. um I do think there’s something to be said about the whole “No man has ever loved me like you do” immediately followed by “and all I want is the apple pie life 2.5 kids picket fence basketball hoop. with a husband who’s defining feature is having a big dick and liking me.”
so my final thoughts are that “The Fate of Ophelia” was written for me specifically, “Opalite” is everything I liked about Lover, “Elizabeth Taylor” is good musically and interesting thematically, the title track is fun, but the rest of the album is so painfully obsessed with being acceptable to the mainstream that it is going to be one of my least-listened-to of her albums
Taylor’s always tried to be a relatable mirror, she’s tried to communicate and capture whatever the zeitgeist says girlhood or womanhood is, and she’s fought with herself since 2006 because her own artistic impulses and dreams and desires for her work aren’t in step with her desire for fame and universal acclaim from fans and critics alike.
More to the point she’s always mirrored who she dates - Calvin brought experimentation with EDM and synths that mark Rep’s production even as she had already left him, Joe’s songs are introspective and self-styled as Artistic and her image while she was with him was socially conscious and prone to hanging out with indie darlings and weird lesbians, John and Jake had her desperate to prove she was an adult so she transitioned away from fairytales and prom dresses to grounded real-life stories and a slicker more adult sound. We see the most of Taylor Swift the person when she’s single or in relationships (romantic and platonic) that are falling to pieces, because when she’s deeply in love she’s convinced her new man will fix her and she writes to appeal to and please him. (I don’t think it’s a coincidence that her most inane pop songs and her least clever lyrics are on this album - her current boyfriend doesn’t listen to her music, and he could probably be convinced to listen to this since it paints a picture of her as an eager sexual partner and domestic goddess.)
most of my connection to her music has always been about what I associate it with outside of her, so I don’t think I’ll have trouble with finding ways to become fond of the rest of this album, but it says some troubling things about her that she’s gone from “I lie to everyone and myself about what I want and who I am except for the fact that I want a career” to “oh I was lying about that too”.
whenever she stops mirroring (which will happen) it will be interesting to see what happens.
Taylor Swift on her thought of process writing 'The Fate Of Ophelia':
"I just have this fixation on Shakespeare characters that I fall in love with and I can't stand to see them meet a tragic demise. I can't, I don't want that to be what happened to them because I'm like 'Wait, are you talking about Ophelia? she died? what do you mean?' I was really excited to see what happened with her and Hamlet. They seem great. And I'm kind of going back to the song 'Love Story' which I wrote when I was a teenager. I was just like, I can't watch Romeo and Juliet not work out. What do you mean they both die? They don't in my version of things. So it's like you just turn the movie off before the bad ending. But this is a little bit like that, The Fate Of Ophelia talks about how Ophelia was driven mad by love and it talks about- the hook says like, you dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of ophelia. It's a love song, and it's also just got one of catchiest post hook kind of sections that I'm pretty proud of. It's crazy to talk about the songs this much, it's been a secret for over a year."
