Dinah had walked in on the French engine caught in a.. less than ideal emotional state. Or more accurately she’d heard music playing from a back room, had gone to shut it off, and then had been thoroughly startled when she’d discovered poor Coco was sitting in the dark room all by herself. 

After skating over she took a seat beside her and asked, “Do you maybe wanna talk about why you’re listenin’ to Celine Dion in the dark?”

Coco slowly turned her head to face Dinah, forcefully stifling up tears with a blank expression on her face. “Non…Non non, Dinah. I’d prefer not to…C’est tres tres personelle,” urged the angsty eurostar.

“Oh sugar,” Dinah frowned empathetically and took out her handkerchief, handing it gingerly over to the poor engine. “even if you don’t feel like talkin’ at the very least dry your eyes. Like I always say clean makeup may not be able to make a situation better but ruined makeup can only make a mood worse!”

Still forcing more and more teardrops out of her eyes, Coco politely took the handkerchief, but kept her expression as it was. A visual expression of deep loathing, grief, and regret placed on the engine’s face. “Sacre bleu. Now you tell me!” she replied.

Coco then blew her nose against the tissue multiple times, until her emotional hole of darkness would fade away. She sincerely hoped the tears would be obliterated, but there was not a single use in hoping this. On the one hand, Coco was happy the dining car came to console her. Yet on the other, the eurostar immediately felt obligated to reveal what was actually upsetting her. 

How she badly wanted to brush that obligation out of the way. Like she told Dinah earlier, Coco refused to mention what was lingering in her mind. She didn’t want to, all because of the need to maintain her reputation as a world-renowned racer. So, anything she would dare to talk about, meaning worries ranging from painful childhood memories to moments of oppression, can thoroughly ruin her social status.

Or so the underwater engine thought. She didn’t know.

Dinah frowned, sensing the conflict in the poor engine. She couldn’t bare to see trains cry, and she especially couldn’t bare to see good trains cry. Even if Coco was a bit of a diva, Dinah could tell that she was also one of those good engines, and Starlight knows there weren’t many of those around here. She didn’t deserve to be weeping all by herself, so she took a seat beside her, careful of sitting down so her skirt wouldn’t be crushed.

“Well even if you don’t want to talk, I don’t want you sitting here all alone.” She turned the radio down a bit and patted Coco’s back. “I’ve cried in many a closet and I know first hand that it only gets worse if you don’t have’a shoulder t’ lean on.”

After blowing her nose one more time, Coco stared at the radio in front of her. Still deep in her contemplation. Although besides her current episode, she knew Dinah said what she said.

“…Ah, ouais. Je sais…” the engine replied monotone, slowly nodding her head. “Mais…merci beaucoup. Très, très beaucoup Dinah,” Coco added facing the carriage, but then turned her face to the radio again.

Dinah listened and nodded along, smiling comfortingly before stuttering out, “Oh sugar I uh… don’t speak French I’m sorry”

“N-Non! Non non. Don’t apologize.” the eurostar then reassured Dinah, swating her head towards hers on cue. “I-I vas only saying thank you, you know? Because, well…quite frhankly, I do deserhve your companie. And…And I feel rathair grateful that I have it. Nothing like zis evehr ‘appened to me before, so…thank you.”

“Oh, well you’re very welcome Coco.” She gave the engine a gentle smile and patted her hand, “Sometimes we just reach’a breakin’ point. I guess yours hitcha pretty hard.. I wanna stay with you, help you through it, starlight knows you’ve earned a little help after a good cry.”

Coco let out a pleased chuckle, in response to the dining car’s comment. “Suhrvey says ze starhlight thought right then, je pense.” Unfortunately, her facial countenance changed around as if the engine was figuring out something. “But, on ze contrary…considering your willingness to help me…Do you actually want to know vat I’m feeling low about?” asked Coco.

For another brief moment, Coco casted a wide-eyed stare at Dinah. The carriage apparently was willing to hear part of her story, did she? If it seemed possible, perhaps Dinah won’t take things the wrong way once she spills the details. Because for one thing or another, that was the very last thing she needed to make happen. 

“Alright…zen I can talk,” the engine said collectively nodding her head.

Then Coco took several quick moments to recollect herself. Mentioning certain trauma from her childhood wasn’t going to be easy in the slightest, yes. Though she wanted to figure out how she could sum it up in a less emotionally painful way. 

So as soon as Coco calmed herself down a little more, she was now ready to speak of the moment of truth. “First of all…it’s about my father.”

Dinah settled in, shutting the radio off entirely and switching her soft empathetic look to a much more serious one. “Your father” She repeated just to make sure she knew she was listening.

Coco let out a pleased chuckle, in response to the dining car’s comment. “Suhrvey says ze starhlight thought right then, je pense.” Unfortunately, her facial countenance changed around as if the engine was figuring out something. “But, on ze contrary...considering your willingness to help me...Do you actually want to know vat I’m feeling low about?” asked Coco.

“Coco I’m far from bein’ a therapist or physiatrist or an anythin’ -trist but maybe that ain’t the best thing to be doin’? Hm?”

Dinah had walked in on the French engine caught in a.. less than ideal emotional state. Or more accurately she’d heard music playing from a back room, had gone to shut it off, and then had been thoroughly startled when she’d discovered poor Coco was sitting in the dark room all by herself. 

After skating over she took a seat beside her and asked, “Do you maybe wanna talk about why you’re listenin’ to Celine Dion in the dark?”

Coco slowly turned her head to face Dinah, forcefully stifling up tears with a blank expression on her face. “Non…Non non, Dinah. I’d prefer not to…C’est tres tres personelle,” urged the angsty eurostar.

“Oh sugar,” Dinah frowned empathetically and took out her handkerchief, handing it gingerly over to the poor engine. “even if you don’t feel like talkin’ at the very least dry your eyes. Like I always say clean makeup may not be able to make a situation better but ruined makeup can only make a mood worse!”

Still forcing more and more teardrops out of her eyes, Coco politely took the handkerchief, but kept her expression as it was. A visual expression of deep loathing, grief, and regret placed on the engine’s face. “Sacre bleu. Now you tell me!” she replied.

Coco then blew her nose against the tissue multiple times, until her emotional hole of darkness would fade away. She sincerely hoped the tears would be obliterated, but there was not a single use in hoping this. On the one hand, Coco was happy the dining car came to console her. Yet on the other, the eurostar immediately felt obligated to reveal what was actually upsetting her. 

How she badly wanted to brush that obligation out of the way. Like she told Dinah earlier, Coco refused to mention what was lingering in her mind. She didn’t want to, all because of the need to maintain her reputation as a world-renowned racer. So, anything she would dare to talk about, meaning worries ranging from painful childhood memories to moments of oppression, can thoroughly ruin her social status.

Or so the underwater engine thought. She didn’t know.

Dinah frowned, sensing the conflict in the poor engine. She couldn’t bare to see trains cry, and she especially couldn’t bare to see good trains cry. Even if Coco was a bit of a diva, Dinah could tell that she was also one of those good engines, and Starlight knows there weren’t many of those around here. She didn’t deserve to be weeping all by herself, so she took a seat beside her, careful of sitting down so her skirt wouldn’t be crushed.

“Well even if you don’t want to talk, I don’t want you sitting here all alone.” She turned the radio down a bit and patted Coco’s back. “I’ve cried in many a closet and I know first hand that it only gets worse if you don’t have’a shoulder t’ lean on.”

After blowing her nose one more time, Coco stared at the radio in front of her. Still deep in her contemplation. Although besides her current episode, she knew Dinah said what she said.

“…Ah, ouais. Je sais…” the engine replied monotone, slowly nodding her head. “Mais…merci beaucoup. Très, très beaucoup Dinah,” Coco added facing the carriage, but then turned her face to the radio again.

Dinah listened and nodded along, smiling comfortingly before stuttering out, “Oh sugar I uh… don’t speak French I’m sorry”

25. Do you have people you can count on when things get tough?

Ehmm....If you ask me, I don’t have zat many people to count on. Right on zee daily, zee only person I count on zee most is Bobo, my brother. (You’ve also ‘eard of ‘im before too, non?) Although recently, I did grow a sort of...changement de coeur over a certain dining carriage. AND a certian steam train as well. 

I finally had ze time to apologize to zem about a week ago And let me tell you, I’ve been tres ecstatique over ho we’ve been on better terms now! Literally after all of zis insolent jackassery in the races...! 

Take it from moi, anon. Deep inside Rusty et Dinah? They are incredibly kind, unique, and understanding souls, who do not deserve to be put down by anyone in ‘zeihr lives! And zaht is on ‘zem being ze right kind of people to count on. Period. <3 <3
