This is one of my favorite mammals to encounter in the wetlands: the small yet scrappy marsh rabbit. These feisty lagomorphs engage in territorial squabbles with one another to establish their turf, and you can see from the facial wound and tattered ears on this individual that such fights can be pretty intense. Clearly this tough guy has earned his right to nibble greens in this swamp.
Waldemar Fink (Swiss, 1893-1948), Laternenlicht [Lantern Light], 1912. Tempera, 33.5 x 27 cm.
