Let’s Talk About Amethyst
She’s a character that I wish got more attention on and off the show, because I find her character and development fascinating.
On the surface, she’s excitable, playful, energetic, and REALLY immature, sometimes more so than Steven. She’s brash, vulgar, loud, impulsive, messy and argumentative. However, when we see her in flashbacks before Steven, she is perceived differently.
She actually acts very similarly to how she does after Steven, but none of the other Crystal Gems scold her or are disgruntled by her (noticeably Pearl).
In Sworn to the Sword, Pearl compares a few thousand years old as a Gem to Steven and Connie’s age now. Amethyst can’t be much older that that, given that she was made in the kindergarten while there was human life on this planet.
Gem age wise, AMETHYST IS STEVEN’S AGE.
Who’s dealing with the loss of her mother figure, and who doesn’t believe there’s anyone who she can turn to for support emotionally
and as a result, doesn’t have a healthy way of expressing herself, so she either lashes out or explodes.
Who’s trying to be a good mother for Steven, taking on a role and responsibilities she is not yet mature enough for while struggling with her own issues.
Dealing with feeling isolated, abandoned, like an embarrassment and a mistake.
I want to see more of this! I want to see more of HER! She rarely gets the limelight, so we don’t know all that much. How did the Crystal Gems find her? When did she change her hair to match Greg’s? When did her resentment for Greg start? How did her resentment for PEARL start? They got along so well in the flashbacks. HOW DID SHE FIND OUT ABOUT THE WAR AND THE PURPOSE OF THE KINDERGARTEN?
Unappreciated bae not getting enough credit for the emotional baggage she deals with needs more episodes and backstory damn it!
