i can't get enough of this guy
my mom told me this story tonight about my grandfather. she said when he was a little boy he was afraid robbers would break into his house in the middle of the night and try to abduct him out of his bed. he thought that they would be able to feel that he was the shape of a little boy under the covers and know to grab him. so he would try to fall asleep in the shape of a letter of the alphabet. so that they would feel for him and be like "oh it's just the letter R, not a kidnappable child"
ID: TikTok comment that reads "I would also like to remind us all that even if the fiber arts community didn't contribute to technological advancements: they kept millennia of humans warm. We live and breathe because someone once upon a time made someone else clothes. You have ancestors for whom a woven garment made the difference between freezing and seeing tomorrow or kept their skin protected from diseases spread by bugs. Textiles give protection from the sun, the elements, parasites and pests. It is never insignificant in any incarnation." end ID
Clothes have always been technology though! Art and technology are not mutually exclusive categories of human achievement. Spun thread and metal needles and tanned leather don't grow on trees, people developed them as technology! Where is that Ursula K Le Guin quote
People bring up that computers have a history in textile crafts and that's true but like I can't emphasize enough. Your denim pants are technology. A fitted sheet is technology. Your stretchy soft underwear is technology. The embroidery on your shirt logo is technology. A leather boot is technology. Your absorbent bath towel is technology. The preindustrial precursors to all of these modern items were also technology. Craft products don't become technology only after a machine touches them; textiles and garments were developed by humans through millennia of experimentation and shared knowledge to address our basic needs and improve our lives.

one time at a funeral i panicked and said the first drink i could think of and the bartender made me the pina colada With all the fixings all the trims all the bells and whistles i didnt even ask imagine youre at a funeral and the person besides you is drinking a pina colada with whip cream as tall as the drink with a cherry and an umbrella, thats what happened to me
I am in the unique position to have heard a great number of people describe to me now what point they think they would be willing to consider themselves “dead”, and as a result of listing the most distinct symptoms I think I now have a satisfying range of possibilities for what I’m willing to accept as “alive”
