A Guzzzler has his Pliny the Elder. Name: Pliny the Elder Brewery: Russian River Brewing Co. From: Santa Rosa, California USA Style: Double hopped IPA Strength: 8% ABV Size: 500ml Price: dunno it was a gift from California! Not one but two bottles I was gifted! I had the first without thinkin bout it. No notes just sweet lushin. I needed to immerse and submerge myself deep into this particular lush. No jottin just swampin. No notes just shlurps. A few days later I would go full subaqueous with bottle two... "Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted." An auld copy and paste job there for ye. Now back to the beer... Right, first of all for any of ye that doesn't know, Pliny the Elder is a big deal. Regularly voted in the top 2 or 3 beers in the Shtates. It was the first ever double or extra hopped beer. It's made in small batches and is considered a fresh beer. The sooner ya drink it the better. My acquaintance who gifted me said bottles, got the last 2 in the store he was in. Destiny! It was Wednesday. They wouldn't have it again til the following week. People queue to get it on release day. The lady in the store was surprised there were two left. My bottles were dated to only 4 weeks before now. They were 4 weeks fresh. Now maybe that's already too old but I'll take it. From California to Dublin. That's not bad like. So what's it like? Is it one of the best beers ever? I pop the cap with a bottle opener I just discovered the last day in a little hidden drawer in an old singer sewing machine we use as a desk. Exciting already! It pours light straw. A fantastic frothy head that has no intention of dissipating! 😃. So confidant. So fluffy. I throw the nose in the half filled glass and get aromas of ....fuck that I need to taste it. I sip. I gulp. I sip. A hop boom with a sweetness. Tropical fruits. Do I get caramel in the sweetness? This is no brown or red ale. I think I do though? It's brewed with 40% more malt and double the hops of its already hoppy IPA the brewery says. So ya maybe the extra malt is givin me the caramel hint. It certainly helps with the mouth feel. So full and cosy. Soup! Less carbonation the longer it's open and I'm drinkin slowly. I prefer it later on as it gets flatter. That's not right? Is it? and the mouthfeel becomes fuller and smoother. Great body! I will go on to nurse this as much as possible but inevitably a tear comes to my eye as the beer comes to an end. Why? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! As the blubbering subsides I start to reminisce on what I just experienced. I get the hype. I get it. Is this the most unique stand out beer in the world? No. Will it lead to world peace? Well if ya get the right people drinking it round a table, maybe. I'll tell ya what it is though. It's. 100%. a. savage "go to all rounder get the job done" beer. It does the basics so well. Depth of flavour, hop boom but balanced with all the extra malt. A serious alcohol kick to let ya know who's boss. Oh and that mouthfeel lads! So soul warming. I would queue for this. Pliny the Elder was an all rounder just like the beer. He died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of mount Vesuvius. It took a volcano to knock this great man and it'll take some volcano of a beer to knock Pliny off its top three perch! Like what I did there? 👀😎 It ticks all the boxes. It's a tool of the trade. NICOTINE SINS, BOTTLE STOUT GUILT

Name: Limited edition export stout no. 4 Brewery: Hope From: Howth Co. Dublin, Ireland Style: Export Stout Strength: 7.5% ABV Price: €1 in a bargain bin! Sound!

It’s in date by a year? Maybe they don’t sell it any more. Get rid of the stock job. A euro! Sound! I got another few decent bargains too. Anyway it pours treacle black with a dirty beige head or as I like to call it ‘1950’s smokers pub ceiling’. Ya know that dirty beige. A catholic Ireland ceiling. Nicotine sins, bottle stout guilt. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. A fine billowy head that’s just itchin to overflow! I slug it with gusto to prevent any spillage. I Get muscavado sugar, treacle and vanilla on the nose. I take my first real shluuug after spill saving one. Caramel? Tea? Coffee yes. It’s sweet but not too sweet. A lovely long light bitter finish. Ya don’t feel the 7.5% at all! This is good tack. If ya like Guinness Export ya’ll like this. That Guinness export is unreal actually. The finish lasts for ages with this. Mmmm. I’ll buy again if it’s still about. It’s on their website anyway.

Only pics I have of the day. No picture of stout but ye know what it looks like ye fuckers ye! G-G-G-Guzzzle for G-G-G-Galway!!! Finally after 29 years! Galway are All Ireland champions! What a day! Some tension! Jesus I was down the Nally. The nerves! Guzzzling and match day go hand in hand. Pre drinks. Losing pints. Winning pints. Emotional pints. My day started early. I worked first and was out by 1:30. Didn't have the head for work but had to be done. I zipped over to Croker with my flag and whistle in the pocket. I asked herself to load up the hip flask earlier with some jemmy. In fairness to her she didn't try to talk me out of it. Jameson is a solid go to match day belly warmer. I had a few fancier ones at home but they would have been lost on me in that tension. I didn't have time for a pre pint which is probably a first. The sun was out after a pissy morning. We met up with who needed to be met up with. Got in with only 10 mins to go in the minor. What a game we were missing. We got our bearings. It was pure boilin in the Nally and we were surrounded by Waterford. Feck it we were here. The minors won! They ran down to the hill an shlid along the grass. Feck they're only kids I thought to myself! I popped open the cheap gammy flask. (Must invest in a proper one. My birthday is soon...😜). Herself doesn't like whiskey but himself does so myself and himself threw a nip into us. Mmmmm! So warm. Instant excitement. Game started. Those first 4 points in the first 4 minutes were pure sensual lovemaking hurling. The sliotar glided silently. It went were it needed to go every time. We were all in awe. What a start. Waterford were too and they were very nervous now. Then BANG! Waterford goal! The place went fuckin cracked around us! The roar was unbelievably loud! Hairs on the back of the neck. Game on that goal said. Sexy time is over it's time to grind. We were always ahead up to half time. The nips went back and forth. Half time. Jesus this is torture! Sick! This lad stands beside us. Just the pain and torture. I was sure Waterford would get their 3rd goal. They didn't. They didn't! We won! Finally! Game over! It took me a few minutes to realise really. Almost like we had to look at each other to celebrate. Most the Hill weren't born when we last won. Yeeeeeesssssssssss!!! We embraced. Guard down. Hug it out! Yesssssssss!!! The speech. The lifting of the cup. Chants of Tony Keady. N17 blasts out of the PA. Never realised how much I loved that song. It was perfect for the occasion. Smiling from ear to ear we evacuated. Round the corner to Gills. Pints! It was Guinness all the way. It's the perfect session beer on a match day. If ya could get craft this was no time for it. We all came in in dribs and drabs. The first one went down. The second one went down. The third one went down. Three pints deep before I realised I'd had three pints. Jesus! They were like nectar! Soup! So smooth and light and perfect for the occasion! We were fuckin wallopin them down! The smiles for bigger. It was class. Yep these were victorious pints. They taste the best and ya swamp them much faster. They kept comin. The round system gets messed up in these situations but manages to sort itself. It alway does. Small bit of banter with some Waterford heads. The Waterford team bus passes pub and stops at red lights outside. The fans applaud. Galway fans join in. Some of the players look devastated. The light stays red for ages. Poor bastards. I stop lookin at them. No need for it. They finally move on. Tough night ahead. We keep swampin. Bout an hour later the Galway team bus comes along. The victorious Galway team bus. They're wavin the McCarthy like fuck out the window. They're leapin about! We're leapin about! I'm blowin my whistle like fuck hangin over the pub barrier. A Garda escort whips them through the lights. They're off... Celebrity news!!! OMG!!! Enda Kenny walks by in a suit. (Your not Taoiseach Enda why so formal?). He embraces Dara Ó' Briain. A Jaysus get a room I think to myself. An Antifa lad roars abuse. Fair fucks. A while later I nod hello to Mary Lou from Sinn Feinn. Ya know the way ya nod howya to someone before ya realise ya only know them from the telly. I did the same to the edge from U2 one day in town. Anyway she was with friends of friends. We taxid down town anyway to Marlborough st. A newish pub there called The Pipers Rest. A GAA bar with trad and craft beer I hear. Sound! In we go. It's gettin late at this stage and whistlin is easier than talkin. I'm not that bad of a state yet but ya know it's just easier to whistle. I order their stout. I think that Four Provinces brewery run this pub. I order the house stout. I remember it to be light and a lot like Guinness. Forget it's name. I go back to Guinness after cos ya know the way your just in the zone at that stage.I'll try it again sober some time. Dublin Legend Dessie Farrell is at the bar. He looks hard as fuck. He's with a few heavies. I just missed Nicky English. A local of his I hear. We used to hate him as kids. He ruined many a Galway day. Ah he's a ledge though. So anyway we kept sippin and slidin and whistlin and poundin all the way up to whelans. Don't know what I drank there. Great blues on and some nice techno upstairs. It's a decent Sunday night spot. Taxi home then at some stage. What a day! Victorious! Some saucin that was.

A thought for this coming Oktoberfest season What is it about the Autumn that gives me a fierce goo for a weissbier. I don't drink it all year round and then come early September the air cools and the dark evenings start winking at ya. How ya now remember me he says. Ya'll be seeing a lot more of me. Put on that coat he says. I love its sweetness. It's hazy orange amber colour, it's big billowy frothy cloud white head. Mmmmm Memories of Berlin come flooding back. Christ we used ta pound the Weiss in the afternoons around Kreuzberg. A Curryworst then to along with it. Heaven! Crisp cool sunshine. A sausage. A beer. Sure what else would ya want! Erdinger, Paulaner and Maisel Weisse being the main three we know in Ireland but it was Berlin that showed me Shöfferhofer. We loved saying the name. Especially if ya ordered a Shöfferhofer helle hefe! It rolls off the tongue like a cushion with a kitten on it! So soft! We would later realise that maybe Shöfferhofer wasn't as good as say Maisel Weisse or Paulaner. It's on the light side like Erdinger. There's loads more but I can't remember. I'm drinkin Paulaner right now cos it's the one in my local and I deserve it. It's better than Erdinger deffo. I might go down to the Dublin Oktoberfest one of the days. I remember years ago it used to be fairly quiet. Ya'd hang out in your coat in the cold with a sausage and a stein no hassle with plenty of room. It's been pure jammers the last few years. Some people find them a bit tacky but I have to say I love being outside with a sausage and a stein! The smell of the coal from that the lads are cookin on. I like the fact too that you have little to no choice in beer. Here ya go drink this sort of craic. That sound like. I always prefer outside to inside the tent. Not into the shite music that's supposed to be shite. Ya know the German stuff. Anyway just thought I'd give ye something to think about over the next while. Hey you Mr. Ship! Mind those rocks! Kilkenny v Waterford 2017 Smithwicks pale ale v metalman pale ale A lot of people saw it comin. Kilkenny are in transition, they've lost too many key players. Waterford have this. I like the hurlin but don't know too much about it. One thing I do know is never write Kilkenny off! Being a Galway man I know what those beasts can do. Size ya up in the first half, let ya walk in at half time level or maybe even a point or two up just for the craic! Like a cat teasin a mouse before he finishes the poor little craythureen off, only for them to turn the screw the second half and with 10 mins to go it's bye bye. Exit row F, get the train or go down town. Probably end up in whelans wonderin why you're havin more craic than the victorious Cats. There too used to winnin we bellow! Oh yeah well 1/1/17 was different. The invincible machine is no longer invincible. Waterford were victorious. Still brought them to extra time though! Name: Smithwicks pale ale Brewery: St. James gate, Dublin From: Kilkenny, (like an NFL franchise it moved to Dublin). Strength: 4.5% ABV Style: pale ale Smithwicks is an old world Kilkenny ale no longer based in Kilkenny. It's a Dublin ale now owned by Italians? Wiki tells me diagio is British actually? What's this Smithwicks pale ale? Jumpin on the craft wagon? Can ya teach an old dog new tricks? Can ya teach an old cat new tricks? Time will tell. It pours golden. A light malty caramel on the nose? I consume. Bready, biscuity, strawy caramel? A little biterness at the finish. It's grand. At the low end of the scale of pale ale flavour intensity. Put it this way if it was a chilli it'd be no scotch bonnet! Thing I like about the macros going craft is that when your at a wedding ya now have a bit of choice like. I can have Hop House 13 or Smithwicks pale ale instead of Heineken or Carlsberg. Both of them are now an alternative to stout aka Guinness. Both light and sessionable. Name: Metalman Brewery: Metalman Brewing Co. From: Waterford, Ireland Style: American pale ale Strength: 4.3% Metalman from Waterford. First time I heard of this I thought it was a gammy name. I thought maybe a few moshers had set up a brewery. For metallers it would have been a lame name but no that wasn't the case. It's named after a statue is it? A landmark anyway. A quick Google tells me yeah, after a metal statue of a fella. He looks quite dashing actually! Hand on hip casually saying Hey you Mr. Ship! Mind those rocks! Metalman is one of the first Irish crafts I noticed too. It's solid. Always has been. It's a session ale. I love the can, reminds me of a jukebox, kind of an Art Deco vibe off it too like, and it's in the cosy zone of 4.3%. It pours a pale golden orange colour with a thin head. Citrus fruity aroma ya know like that general vibe. I lush. More fruit. Grapefruit. Orange? I'll say mandarin to spice it up and maybe peach? Stone fruit will cover that. A dry finish, little bitterness. Ya know the vibe like. Drinkable sessionable fruity pale ale. Lovely. Does the job. Now most of us beer nerds scoff at the macro bustin out the faux micro. Where was this pale ale 20 years ago Smithwicks? Hah? I'd say a team of a hundred diagio suits had many working lunches deciding on this pale ale. I'd say the bill for that lunch was more than metalmans budget the pricks! Metalman was always gonna win this drink off with Smithwicks. The underdog. The little man. It was always gonna be their day. Was it always gonna be Waterfords day? People who know more than me thought so but I had the Kilkenny fear. Ya see this is how it goes. Galway will beat Kilkenny in a quarter or semi. Might even trash them! (That semi in the last decade) but then we'd go on to lose to Tipp in a final. I NEED MY LEMON SOUR! I NEED MY FIX! Name: The Púca Brewery: The White Hag Style: Dry hopped lemon sour Where: Balymote, Co. Sligo, Ireland Strength: 3.5% ABV Price: I got 4 mixed cans for a tenner, €2.75 maybe? I know all ready that The White Hag make some serious juice. That session ale they have is savage. I crack this open after a day of work and a trip from D Town to G town and about 3 hours sleep the previous night. I'm fecked but proud of myself for still being able to be out saucin before a 6am start at work and hardly any snooze time. Channeling my inner 21 year old. Still got it! Anyway can has been cracked and I pour. It pours a hazy lemon colour. Doesn't actually have much of a beer colour at all. Pure light pure lemon. It's low light living room chill vibes so I'm not seeing it's true colour in daylight. I could turn on the main light but to be honest I'm not gettin off this couch. I sniff. Oooooh twang!! Lemon!! (sing this in the a Bono voice). The head is light and fluffy dissipating to a ring in no time. This is gonna be good. I taste. Wow! Lemon sherbet. Cordial job! But not that sweet. A great sourness. So clean! It has the mouth feel of a dry cider. Actually this in a large glass with a lot of ice would be unreal on a hot day! Purists pure cursin' me now for suggesting all the ice but just sayin'. Chill out like. The lemon is there right through to the finish. The sourness too. Dryness at the end. I pass it round. The auld lad sips. He scrunches his face. "That's lemony all right, ya wouldn't have more than one. Smells like hoegarden". (Oh we have a beer connisour here in the corner?) The auld wan sips. "That's lovely I'd drink that". Mam is not a beer drinker and is surprised she likes it. The sister sips. "Lovely, so refreshing". Ya it is. It's damn refreshing. At 3.6% it's pure sessionable and I reckon I'd drink a few no hassle. Love it's sour lemon vibe. Lemon and coriander were added to the brew too. Do I get the coriander? Yeah? Yeah. No. Maybe? Well let's put it this way it's there for a reason. 😜. Listen if ye want a proper in depth review listen to a beer sommelier! All ye need to know is that it's unbelievably sessionable, if you're not a beer drinker ya might like it and if ye want say naaathin do a bulmers on it and whack a load of ice in it. There. Sold. I'm gonna drink this again and again. It's fantastic. Hang on it's not one of those limited jobs is it? They get ya hooked and the next thing ya know they're like " oh no that was just a small batch, it's all gone now". Well feck me if they come out with some statement like that I don't know what I'll do! I need my lemon sour! I need my fix! 💉😰😰😰 Ha only messin drink responsibly and all that. Luminous pinks and yellows on dark as death black. Kind of a voodoo skeleton vibe? Maybe a Mexico death parade kinda fella. He's an alien though? Is he? With a horned helmet. Earth calling Trappist 1. Come in Trappist 1.

So that star with the 7 earth size planets with 3 that possibly contain life is called Trappist 1. I could be wrong with the number of planets but ya know what I’m on about like. A star named after beer monks? Space. Monks. Beer. Holland. Belgium. Aliens. Sure fuck it this’ll write itself I says!

I do love a good triple. A slow burner when ya be chillin like. It pours a lovely inviting golden blond with a proud bright white top. As elegant as champagne in my go to Galway crystal. My crystal brandy glasses are perfect for triples. It’s fruity on the nose. Peachy? Flowery? Floral I should say. More professional. Apricot? Yellow fruits. Right. Let’s lush. It’s full bodied almost creamy in texture. Sweet. Light maltiness. Mmmm. Bitter ending. Dry finish. Solid.

Enough about that lets talk shite. Aliens? Abroad there on one of those Trappist 1 planets. Do they have beer? I hope so! They need it. They must have come up with it. I mean ever since way back in ancient Egypt or Sumerian times we’ve been lushin beer. Fellas mixin crushed up grain and water to see what it was like. They made porridge/bread. They made beer. Ya see they both came about at the same time. Maybe a fella was full and left some aside and a while later he went back to it. It had fermented. It was beer! Where am I goin with this? Oh yeah aliens. I’m sure the same thing happened above there in Trappist 1. Do they have hops? What kinda grains? Do ya need ID if you’re under 18? So many questions.

Name: Strawberry Milkshake IPA Brewery: Rascals brewing Where: Dublin Style: IPA Strength: 6.3% Size: Pint Damage: €6.50 So a tweet goes up that Idlewild bar in Dublin will have a new beer in from 4pm today. A strawberry milkshake IPA. Sounds intriguing my giddy Monday tastebuds say? I agree whole heartedly. I'll be in the area later too! After a failed attempt to apply for a drivers licence ( I forgot passport, proof of address and filled the form out wrong) I hit the city. It's freezin out. I walk in the door of Idlewild. Still love those stain glass windows. There it is. Strawberry Milkshake IPA by Rascals. 6.3%? Meaty. I order one. "Will ya have a pint?" Says the barman I was thinkin glass but fuck it it's Monday and it's January. "Pint yeah" I says with a giggle. Let's go deep. "Let me know what ya think, feedback welcome, it's something we're tryin out. Only 19 litres made" he says That's only 40 pints I slowly calculated! Light is low in the bar and the beer has a cloudy hazy appearance. Fruity on the nose. Yeah a kinda strawberry vibe. I imbibe after finally unraveling my warm scarf and my cold mind. Mmmmmm! Fruity! A mellow finish. I do get strawberry milkshake. This is great! Like it's not just a beer with the sweetness of a strawberry syrup say. It's a sweet mellow IPA with a nice strawberry background. I ask the barman how it's made. Ya see the barman designed the beer in collaboration with Rascals and it's the first in a series of beers based on cocktails. It's a pilot, they might change the fruit to apricot. Or was it peach? Anyway he goes on to tell me that lactose was added to boost the sweetness. Like those milk stouts in the US maybe. Fructose? Sugar was added? Feck I think he said fructose but anyway a sugar was added that doesn't ferment and stays in the beer to give it body. Finally strawberries were added. Wow! These guys are going deep! Thinkin the large thunk bout the damn drank! Next up is a beer based on an old fashioned. Cloves, cardamom and star anise will be used. It'll be a dark ale. Brewed at De Proef, Lochristi, Belgium Style: Pale Ale with orange peel and pine needles Strength: 6.0% ABV Size: 330ml Price: €4.99 The tree is up, the rooms all twinkle light sparkles. Ponsietta is all blast red! The smell of pine. Pure sniffin it all in. Ya I got the cosy glow and I gots me a seasonal Christmas beer. Everyone's favourite gypsy brewery Toøl have brewed this pale ale with Christmas orange peel and Christmas pine needles. It pours a hazy orange with a feckin gas rambunctious head! Frothy! It slowly wisps down the river away. It's in no rush. Light marmalade on the nose. Peachy? Citrusy. Yeah I get the pine I think yeah. I sip the soup! Tropical fruit vibes. Like a muted Belgian yeast? Yeasty but not full gas Belgian. Car gas not laughin gas like earlier. Low end malt. Dry hop finish. Kind of an oily mouthfeel? Serious? Yeah! Feckin hell. The TV test screen from our childhoods. The one we stared at waiting for RTE 2 to turn on at 5 in the evening in 1985. I had ta buy it. It just looks cool. Better taste good I says to myself! A Gose ale brewed with oranges. Hasta be nice doesn't it? "Gose is a top-fermented beer that originated in Goslar, Germany. It is brewed with at least 50% of the grain bill being malted wheat. Dominant flavours in gose include a lemon tartness, a herbal characteristic, and a strong saltiness". I pure beeged above quote from wiki. Cut and paste job say nathin! It pours a hazy lemony orangey yellows kinda colour. Ya know what I mean like and the head is boisterous and fun! Fluffy and wispy at the same time? It dissipates in a quick jig, by the time I photo it like. It's pure orange on the nose. I sip. I pour a bit for the brother. Jeez that's lovely he says Tis I says back It's sour at first but the orange quickly follows through. A small dry sneaky finish. The mouthfeel is that of a vitamin tablet in water. At 3.8% this is fierce quafable. Dangerously so! It's some juice! It's nearly gone as I type and it's not even hot! Gose to Hollywood. Great name! So it says on the side of can that TO ØL got star struck in Hollywood and brought back the best fruits in California. Okay? I wonder who they saw? Oh look it's mickey rourke! Let's take these oranges! Well anyway they truly are a nomadic brewery. All about the world shop collaborating and vibing and exchanging. I like their buzz. A Danish brewery making a German style beer in Belgium by way of Hollywood using Mickey Rourkes oranges. I wonder how his dogs are gettin on? He has loads doesn't he? Poodle jobs? O Brother Brewing are serious! This is a pint of The Chancer. It is beautiful soup! It's an American pale ale. It's at 5.4%. It's at my table and its goin down my Rudi Gullet! They are from Wicklow. Try their "The Fixer" too! They are both so well rounded. Boom!

Currently live guzzzling a pint of Elevation pale ale by Wicklow Wolf. 4.8% ABV. A zesty high start with low end malt and a medium bitter finish. A little biscuits. Tayshte! A post mini cycle tipple. Cruised from Dun Laoghaire up Killiney hill then down Vico road to Collimore harbour for a look at the boats and swimming and fishin like. Short but hilly with outta tune gears and squeaky brakes.
