@theinklingofcats
so the fifa rules on playing for a national team are either country of birth, country of your grandparents or 5 years of residency. this genuinely feels like the diaspora world cup. the experience ranges from the post war labor migration along colonial lines to europe shaping both the european and north african teams. to curacao having only one player actually born on the island, given that it only got independent from the dutch in 2010. there's athletes at the top of game choosing to opt out the hell that is playing for england nt and its tabloid culture and there's playing for their countries of origin because that's really the only door open because the country they got scouted, trained and live in is just glutted with talent. 98 players were born in france. all hail the clairefontaine.
more curiously this is all coming to a head in the us, home of some of the largest diaspora populations for a lot of countries. teams like senegal cannot have many tourist supporters fly in due to trump's visa ban on their country and are entirely reliant on diaspora supporters. us soccer is very conservative and has long aligned with trump in its advertising even before the second term and has had no desire to convince immigrants to lend their allegiance. anyways i think we'll see more scenes like yasin ayari scoring on tunisia and sheepishly half celebrating and half apologising because his dad is tunisian.
ok wait, there's several siblings playing for different teams!
Inaki Williams (Ghana) and Nico Williams (Spain)
Desire Doue (France) and Guela Doue (Ivory Coast)
Brian Brobbey (Netherlands) and Derrick Luckassen Brobbey (Ghana)
Harry Souttar (Australia) and John Souttar (Scotland)
None of them were in the same group, so they're likely to meet each other in the knockouts directly. Pretty sure there haven't been this many before. The Williams brothers are the likeliest to both be starters.
Empty Movement's Discord mod teasot recently acquired a stack of copies of production materials from the Utena movie. Out of 90 odd images, 37 were specifically of this kiss. I can't really sum up the vibe better than that!! Uploads coming soon. Amazing preview above!
NOW GO SEE THE MOVIE IN THEATERS THIS WEEKEND
lots of people in this world using the word “mutual aid” when maybe they actually mean “charity”
Ahab and Starbuck in the Cabin
Starbuck and Ahab in chapter 109 of Moby-Dick. Given that I designed Starbuck as a deer, I felt I had to draw the scene of him being threatened with a musket. I decided to take the opportunity to try out some monochrome styles, using only black and white. The linework in the first image is inspired by Rockwell Kent’s Moby-Dick illustrations, and gave me a new appreciation for how long it must have taken him to draw all that.
Concept sketches:
I know we're two thirds through the month, but the idea just came to me.
Plus, the whale oil is already gay:
(Characters featured are Ahab wolf, Star-buck, Ishmael stoat, and Queequeg mangrove monitor.)
Do you ever read the opening paragraph of Moby Dick and need to sit down for a while
as this is the year I read a bunch of classic literature I spent a month ploughing through Moby Dick and finally finished it, then moved on to the Count of Monte Cristo. And now that I’m reading a second 19th century novel I realize the hurdles I’d chalked up to Moby Dick having been written 200 years ago is actually wrong and Herman Melville was just writing Like That for love of the game.
not to be the millionth person to reiterate “reading the classics and then finding out it’s good” but yall I keep being surprised by how much I love reading Moby Dick. like obviously it’s of its time in a lot of ways but like every chapter has at least one moment that’s like, ok so for instance, there’s a bit where they’re in a church and Ishmael is wondering on the nature of death and mourning and ghosts and then says
“But Faith, like a jackal, feeds among the tombs,”
and I’m just like oh shit, that line’s hard as fuck, honestly bars!

U have a rlly refreshing take on AI. While im the opposite and personally against image creation tools (but not so much abt text/code based tools), its nice to see ppl having nuanced opinions that isnt either "literally all forms AI should explode" or "AI will save us all". I think a primary issue is that AI is in the hands of few big monopoly companies and we citizens dont really get a say in how those technologies can be responsibly developed.
well sure, but can you name a time when We Citizens have ever had a say in making sure technology gets Responsibly Developed. like to me these are not so much critiques of AI technology as much as they are critiques of the way our entire society and economy are structured. which are legitimate complaints obviously. but I think looking at the way ai is being forced onto consumers top down by tech monopolies with juicy defense contracts and framing it as an ai problem rather than a military industrial complex problem misses the forest for the trees.
There is no life in thee, now, except that rocking life imparted by a gently rolling ship; by her, borrowed from the sea; by the sea, from the inscrutable tides of God. But while this sleep, this dream is on ye, move your foot or hand an inch; slip your hold at all; and your identity comes back in horror. Over Descartian vortices you hover. And perhaps, at mid-day, in the fairest weather, with one half-throttled shriek you drop through that transparent air into the summer sea, no more to rise for ever. Heed it well, ye Pantheists!
Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Chapter 35: The Mast-Head
Help refugees by salvaging tents and camping equipment from music festivals this summer! [NL/BE]/[UK]
their website is here: https://www.mobilerefugeesupport.org/
If there's a festival you're going to thats not on the lists below, you can probably contact them and see if you can set up a collection there yourself!
The text of the NL/BE post:
Festival salvage is where 90% of the tents we give out come from. It allows us to have sufficient tents not only to give shelter to people as they arrive in the makeshift camp of Dunkirk but also to respond to the destructive and violent evictions during which people’s tents are destroyed and/or taken. Sleeping bags, clothing, tarpaulin and canned food are other items we gather during festival salvage. If you are in Belgium or the Netherlands joining one of these salvage dates is an easy and very useful way of supporting displaced people sleeping rough. The organisers of each salvage are linked next to the dates. Please message them directly. The text of the UK post:
We have just two festival salvages in the UK so we’re hoping to get as many volunteers as possible to come and collect all the abandoned tents and sleeping bags that would otherwise end up in landfill. Our partners @hertsforrefugees are organising the salvage and you can contact them if you’d like to join any of the dates. They have sign up forms linked in their bio. Gathering left behind tents and sleeping bags from festivals is how we ensure we can equip displaced people surviving in the makeshift camps around Dunkirk with the very basic need for shelter. Without salvage we would not be able to equip the thousands of people we meet every year, experiencing displacement and living through some of the harshest conditions made all the worse by escalating police violence. Once a week, sometimes more, the state evicts people from their makeshift camps, taking away their tents, bedding and very often the few personal items they have. You can help support these people, by joining a salvage date. No experience needed! ⛺️Boomtown, Winchester 18th and possibly 19th August ⛺️ Reading festival, Reading 31st August and 1st September. Head over to @hertsforrefugees to sign up via the forms in their bio (note; link to the forms here: https://linktr.ee/hertsforrefugees ) Thank you 🙏
