[ICHIRUKI MONTH | DAY 1: COMPETITION]
Height? Cuteness? Itās always a competition, but in the end Rukia always wins
Yāall know when Mulan is sitting in the rain and watches her parents silhouette disappear as the candle is blown out and then her eyes squint in determination and the music that starts to play and you see her go into the family temple and light a match and bow in respect and then sneak into her parents room and switch the scroll for her hair brooch and then the way her reflection is shown as she pulls the sword and cuts her hair?? Itās literally more iconic than any marvel movie
Yāall know that there is heavy symbolism in that scene to show that Mulan isĀ the spirit of the Great Stone Dragon and thatās why Mushu wasnāt able to awaken it?
im sorry What!! i never knew this! my life feels fuller!!! ahhhh
Mulan sits in the rain underneath the statue of the Great Stone Dragon (who is looking down on her), and suddenly decides on a course of action. She looks up, resolved to go to war in place of her father and runs into the temple where she lights the match and beseeches protection for her family. The stone she bows to and that we see lit up by lightening strike is that of the dragon, whose eyes are looking out after her, lit from underneath by the candles. The scene transitions to the divider in the house that also has an icon of the dragon. where she replaces her hair comb with the summons. Then we see the sword hilt, also the dragon, and as she draws the blade we see her face replace it. She ties up her hair, then as she opens the wardrobe, the handles are also the dragon. After donning the armor, the view shows her facing us, with the hilt of the sword (the face of the dragon) in front of her face, where she then turns the sword to reveal her face, and sheaths it. As she leaves, we flash back to the temple, and the eyes of the dragon flash as her grandmother wakes up.
The Great Stone Dragon resides within her. She is the protector of the family.
After this explanation, the scene where Mushu cannot wake up the stone dragon makes so much more sense. I appreciate the symbolism so much more. I noticed the dragon but didnāt notice she was constantly juxtaposed with the dragon!
Canon accepted.

Sure:
The more I think about Todoroki Rei, the more angry I get. Iām not kidding when I say she gets whatās probably the most misogynistic treatment in the whole series. I cannot fathom the amount of apathy it takes to decide that the redemption of an abuser is more interesting and more worthy of writing about than the humanity and complexity of his victim. I donāt think itās even a conscious overwriting of her story, itās most likely having constructed a basic background for her, having an inkling of how she fared in the Todoroki household, deciding that she gets some sort of reconciliation with Shouto, but not bothering to flesh that out nor put it to paper because that story has simply been deemed uninteresting and undeserving of being told. On the other hand, her and her childrenās abuser has a narrative imbued with change and progress, however unwarranted, that takes up several chapters worth of time and effort to detail.
Itās the invisibility of women, and specifically of abused women. Once we know that a woman has been abused, weāve seen enough, and our focus shifts to the abuser, mining him for his reasons, for his potential regret, for hisĀ āgood character.ā His victim is allowed to fade quietly into the background, or maybe not-so-quietly if sheās decreed vile enough to be further torn down for the audacity of having her abuse publicized. The way the Todoroki family narrative is written (and the way itās being received by readers) is so reflective of the culturally-dominant treatment of rape and abuse cases in the real world, and affirms for us that abused women, even fictional, donāt get a story. Theyāre merely created as an obstacle for their abuser to overcome, whether itās by successfully discrediting her, or in this case, by being won over again. Reiās not written to have her own story; sheās written to serve her abuserās development, and I cannot think of a more vile and unjust way to tell an abuse narrative.
All of this is so eloquent and words how I feel for Rei so perfectly. The fact her abuser made the top 10 in the most recent popularity poll further solidifies this.
In both the bnha universe and real life, if an abuser gives an apology, no matter how insincere (do NOT call her abuserās actions genuine; while his life was literally flashing before his eyes he was justifying his actions and that alone proves he doesnāt regret doing them and would do them again) or how much of an afterthought said āapologyā was (usually if there is one itās only because they were accused/caught. A scandal at this point would ruin everything so getting caught now is the last fucking thing he can afford after finally finally getting #1, and thatās always been and always will be the priority over the rest of Todoroki family) they immediately become more sympathetic and likeable than the victim, regardless of how professional or justified the victim is.
If you need any examples just look at the #metoo movement, the #elenÄo movement in Brazil, or like any fucking politician or wealthy businessmanās history. Rei and the entire Todoroki familyās abuser is written just like these people, he did something awful for years and years without getting caught, but now heās āapologizingā, is drawn soft with āpromises to changeā, and it instantly reflects better on him than the victims.
Thank you for the kind words!
I wanted to reply+elaborate a little, especially about this tag in particular:Ā #the fact people scorn rei or vastly prefer her abuser is absolutely inconceivable to me
This is very true and incredibly unfortunate, but I also understand why this divide happened. Fandom itself is not misogyny-free of course, but a huge part of the blame rests on Horikoshiās writing itself. The reason I didnāt talk too much about the fandom (even though Iāve definitely seen and disapprove of the interpretations/behaviors youāve mentioned) is that much of the positive reception of the abuser could have been mitigated by deeply exploring Rei herself as a character, but rather than doing that, Horikoshi decided to give her a fairly blank slate of a background and personality. Unless itās pertinent to the male characters in her life, whether as a facet of Shoutoās trauma or her abuserās feelings, Rei is never featured independently as a character with her own internal life, desires, and needs. As atrocious as the fandom may be, Horikoshi chose to humanize an abuser before his victim, essentially ensuring by his own hands that her abuser would receive more sympathy, in basically what should amount to a kick in the face for portrayals of abused women in fiction.
But what youāve brought up is absolutely true as well: the way fans (incl. self-proclaimed feminists) have chosen how to react or not react to this is deeply troubling. The Todoroki storyline absolutely cannot be divorced from the way itās narrated, in that in order to make her abuser sympathetic, Reiās personhood must necessarily be downplayed; similarly, the positive reception to the abuser in the fandom cannot be divorced from the passive erasure or active defamation of Rei. Itās completely wild to watch what we think of asĀ āreal worldā dynamics playing out in what people claim is aĀ āfictional,ā fandom space, crossing over from the way Horikoshi writes Reiās (lack of) story to the unapologetic way fans have flocked over to an abuser with the barest inkling of complexity. In the name of escapism, many people have replicated the behavior they purportedly condemn when it happensĀ āin real life,ā but Iād argue that the very ability of theĀ ārealā process to replicate itself in the āfictionalā space means that the line isnāt as clearly divided as people would like to think. I mean, if weāre all decent people with the ārightā opinions when it comes toĀ āreal people,ā it should be easier to reject this narrative and demand justice for a fictional character, shouldnāt it?
In the light of the recent owl Ellie scandal and previous Geguri scandal I have been thinking a lot about female gamers and their experiences online and why female gamers are so underrepresented in both professional competitive online games and casual games, especially team based games like Overwatch and league of legends, and treatment of female gamers are so bad and toxic. I thought about this specifically in the light of competitive FPS games.
I thought of two main underlying factors which both stem from societyās gender role pressures on girls. In general terms;
1. When video games started proliferating (PC and console), somehow society considered video games a *boys* thing and would buy video games for boys but buy girls Barbie dolls??? Shout out to my fellow girls who had zero fucking interest dolls but weāre always given them as presents The long term effect of this would be boys having earlier access to video games while girls were never introduced to video games and brought into the fold, and thus would not be predisposed to have an interest in it growing up or exposure to video games.
2. FPS games were mostly to do with guns and warfare, which society would condition boys to like as it is something āmanlyā in terms of male gender roles and reward males for engaging in activities involving guns and war (writing that sentence made me feel gross) and simultaneously punish females for liking the same things, because itās āunladylikeā and females should all be⦠I dunno, knitting or something. This resulted in whole generations of girls being deprived of building a FPS foundation from an early age - this could be a factor for the lack of female pro players in the competive FPS scene because building a foundational skillset in team based FPS games takes time, you need core muscle memory mouse skills and game sense etc etc, which male gamers could have at least a decade of from playing counter strike / quake etc .
Female players are trying really hard and at every turn they get pushed back by a subgroup of toxic or callous male players unaware of their privilege but also having the gall to feel āthreatenedā because another human being who happens to possess a vagina is better than they are at something, Iām??? This motherfucker guy who was behind the Ellie scandal pretended to be a girl but he had an āoutā , he could just stop being a girl but the rest of us female gamers canāt do this? And his actions I think are very damaging to female gamers online and the lasting repercussions would be that people are even less likely to accept female gamers as just another member of the gaming community, and the assumption that if a female is good then itās probably another āEllieā. So fuck you, dude.
I find it incredible that a subgroup of sad male players have the audacity to insult female players for trying and telling them to āget goodā, when they are unaware of the deadweights society has put on female gamers from the very beginning and the relative privilege they have had (haha how is that different from everything else in life).
(And I know I wrote this in the context of female gamers due to the recent topical scandals but I extend this consideration to all minorities in the gaming community, whichever groups you may fall in, LGBTQ+, poc, gamers with disabilities , gamers with mental health challenges. Hang in there, shitās hard, yo.)
