(R)Adelaide Being the place where all of the Great Southern Rail trains depart from, we've now been to Adelaide on 3 separate occasions. Honestly, that's two too many. However it is my belief that 'Radelaide' gets a bit of a bad rep. It's always sunny there, and was always super hot, sometimes too hot. Known as the city of churches, there is plenty of stuff to do. Such as; visiting the beautiful botanic gardens, super cool markets where you can get some amazing eats (breakfast is a must) and my favourite- Hahndorf- the cute little German settlement nestled in the leafy hills. We went on my birthday to have a German feast, and feast it was, the portions are huge! We also went to Henley beach, the closest one to the CBD. It was having a bit of a facelift at the time which was a shame but it was still lovely. Hit up Peel street for great little bars and places to eat, we went to Bread and Bone and had a great burger. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely don't miss St Louis desert parlour. It was amazing. We were full to the brim with chocolate goodness! And on the off chance it does rain, head to Rundle Mall for heaps of shops!
Uluru and Alice Springs It's magical, mystical and full of history and they say it's something you should do if you get the chance. Taking the train to Alice Springs was an awesome way to get there. After meeting the spiritual old lady on a previous train- see previous blog post- it made us want to visit the rock even more. No sign of her unfortunately but it was an amazing experience all the same. We hired a car to Alice Springs (hot) and drove the 4 something hours to Uluru (hotter). The drive was uneventful, pretty boring, very straight roads through lots of desert. When we arrived we drove straight into the national park and visited the cultural centre. We learned all about the rock and the aboriginal stories behind it. You used to be able to climb it, but it is now frowned upon and seen as disrespectful to the aboriginal tribes. We drove to a couple of lookout points and decided to find our hostel for the night. Once we had checked in we drove back to the rock for sunset, the colours in the sky were beautiful. We also got up at the crack of dawn to see the sunrise. We embarked upon the 10k base walk at 7am and it was already creeping up toward 30 degrees. Flipping hot! On the way back to Alice Springs we drove to neighbouring rock formation The Olgas and stepped out to take some photos. At this point I just wanted to be in the air conditioned car with an ice cream!
Our current air bnb is amazing! It has a river in the back garden, use of kayaks and a games room 😍
