How To Keep Leftover Salad From Getting Soggy
Salad is a great food for maintaining a diet and also very beneficial as it is healthy. It is a very common incident that often there is some leftover salad after eating them, and then we want to keep them for next-day lunch.
But when we go to eat our leftover salad we see that it has become soggy and looks unhealthy. However, if we eat that soggy salad it would be very unhealthy for us and also can make us sick.
That is why we should always store them in the correct way so that we can eat the leftovers later.
If you don’t want to prepare your salad before your eating then always make sure that your green ingredients are stored in the refrigerator with a paper towel and your fruits are kept fresh with the water.
Remember your salad isn’t crappy because of the ingredients you used in it. It goes bad because you dressed all that at the same time. The acid in dressing makes greens wilt in a hurry. The vinegar or citrus juice in the salad breaks down the cell structure of the leaves, releasing water trapped in the greens.
Preserving Leafy Green Salad
Chop and wash the lettuce and other green leaves. Take a bowl to fill it with cool water and let the leaves soak for about 10 minutes, then remove them. Before soaking them in the water chop off the root of the green leaves. If the water appears dirty and pour the water and take out the leaves and repeat the same process until you get fresh water. After soaking the leaves in the water lay them on a fresh paper towel.
Now place the leaves in a salad spinner and spin it for 15-20 seconds to remove access water from the leaves. If you do not have a salad spinner then place them in a tea towel. Spread out the leaves on the top of the towel, roll them gently then again unroll them and take out the dry leaves.
Many vegetables like tomato, broccoli, cucumbers can be rinsed under running water and dry with a clean paper towel. Carrots and some other vegetables may need to be scrubbed with a vegetable brush. You can also use a vegetable peeler to remove dirt from the vegetables.
Havier vegetables like cucumber, carrot or potato, place them at the bottom of the bowl and lay the lettuce and other leafy green on the top.You can get some freezing tips from Kitchen Geeky.
Do not add dressing, add them before you eat. Because it will make leaves limp and soggy if you add dressing soon. Put a fresh paper towel top of the salad, it will absorb water and condensation, keeping the leaves from getting soggy.
Every day check your salad and stir around the leaves and change the paper towel if it gets soggy.
Take your fruits in a bowl and wash them properly. Expect bananas to chop all the fruits into small pieces and run them into the freshwater. After washing them properly dry them and place them into the refrigerator.
Coat the chopped fruits with vinegar if you are using oxidizing fruit. Cut pineapple, orange, or lemon and squeeze the juice into a separate bowl. Then mix one tablespoon of vinegar in one cup of water, then pour it over the fruits.
If you are using oxidized fruit then it is necessary to use vinegar for storing them. But if you are using non-oxidizing fruits like berries, melon then keeping them in the refrigerator is enough to keep them fresh and healthy.
If you do not have vinegar in your house, you don’t need to be worried because you can store them in the cold freshwater. Place the fruits in a bowl and fill it with water to the brim so that the fruit is completely submerged.
Fruits spoil faster than green leaves that is why store the fruits salad in a bowl with an airtight lid. You can also stretch plastic cling wrap across the top of the bowl.
Do not store them in the refrigerator for more than five days. The fruits lose their freshness if you keep them in the refrigerator for many days. That is why I always try to eat them within 3 to 5 days.
Drain the fruit salad before serving. Take them into another bowl and wash them under fresh running water.
Preserving Meat, Egg and Pasta Based Salad
Many types of meat, eggs, and pasta salad have different pre-cooked ingredients, so it is very important to keep the food protected from the air as much as possible. If you can use plastic cling or wrap to store the salad, your salad will be fresh for 3 days.
As there are many pre-cooked ingredients in the salad try to store them in the refrigerator as soon as possible. If you keep them outside in the air it will get rotten quickly.
As a normal vegetable, or fruit salad you should not keep the salads with meat, egg, and pasta for more than 5 days in the refrigerator. You should eat them as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will lose it’s freshness if you store them for a long time.
So this is the tip for keeping your leftover salad from getting soggy and reducing the waste of your food. I hope these pieces of information will help you to keep your salad fresh and healthy.
