Whether your cow is dried or you’re feeling the pinch of skyrocketing dairy prices at your grocer, this tip is for you. Tonight as we were perusing the family journals from The Depression era I ran across this tip and silently thanked my lucky stars bc it was timely advice. Thank you great great grandma for looking forward and knowing hard times would come again because there’s nothing new under the sun. . . . . . . . #kitchenhacks #butter #familycow #familymilkcow #milkcow #dairycow #dairycows #realmilk #thegreatdepression #depressionera #kitchentips #kitchenstaples #pantrystaples #pantrychallenge #fridgechallenge #folkcore #cottagecore #gardencore #simpliving #slowfashion #simpleandstill #farmcore #slowliving #prairiestyle #mountainstyle #wearethehomemakers #handmade #fromscratchliving #fromscratch https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm-XY5WOfof/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Can we get an anti-food waste tip thread for people with sensory issues going?
I really really struggle with foods sometimes as a disaster autistic.
Examples: If fruits and veggies are past their prime. If I made a ton (happens a lot accidentally because I cannot visualize how much 4 servings is versus 14) and after the eating it the first time or two I can’t stand it. If I samefood for awhile and then out of the blue it’s the nastiest thing I’ve ever had in my life.
Anybody have any tips? Here’s mine:
Can’t stand grapes once they get a little mushy? Try freezing them! You can’t tell that they’re mushy and they’re cold and refreshing.
Bananas brown and mushy? If they’re not straight-up bad you can freeze them and use them in things like smoothies. The browner ones are sweeter anyway!
Have all sorts of weird veggie ends that are getting limp or wrinkly? Get some sort of bag or container to throw them in and keep it in your freezer. Keep adding stuff until you have a decent size amount and use it to make veggie broth. This is also good for those weird end pieces that you don’t want to eat.
Cutting Boards
Plastic V. Wood Cutting Boards Wooden Cutting Board
Advantages 1) A good wood cutting board can last long, long time. If you damage the surface with deep scratches, the board can often be saved by sanding them away. 2) Gentle on Knives - You want to use a hardwood that is also soft enough not to do tremendous damage to your knives.
3) Sanitary: Wood is able to absorb bacteria, trapping it and killing it. Though greasy substances like chicken fat can remain on the surface of the board and continue to be a food-safety risk for many hours.
4) Aesthetically Pleasing - They just looks nice! You can even use them for serving! Disadvantages 1) Requires Some Upkeep: Wooden boards need to be treated with a food grade mineral oil to prevent cracking, warping and stains. 2) More Work to Clean: Do not put them in a dishwasher or soak them. This will shorten the board’s life. Just rinse with warm water and rub more oil on it. 3) Heavy and Unwieldy: Good wooden cutting boards are also heavy and difficult to move around. Thin, lighter-weight ones are more prone to warping. Plastic Cutting Boards - Advantages 1) Inexpensive - self-explanatory
2) Lightweight and Space Efficient - takes up less space than wooden cutting boards, easier to move around the kitchen.
3) Easy to Clean and Sanitize - can be put in the dishwasher and water. 4) Gentle on a Knife's Edge - some plastic cutting boards are made of material that is durable yet still gentle on your knife's blades. Disadvantages 1) Gets Dinged Up and Has To Be Replaced: Plastic can grow increasingly and irreversibly scratched by knives, and those tiny channels are the perfect place for bacteria to hang out. 2) Will Hurt Your Knife More Than Soft Wood: Plastic will also tend to wear down a knife faster than wood. I’ve been tweaking this recipe for Italian Antipasto Pasta Salad for ten years now. (Note: It’s similar to this recipe!) A simple bag of ingredients and three directions for a group gathering favorite.
INGREDIENTS
1 pound bowtie pasta
1/4 pound Genoa salami, chopped
1/4 pound pepperoni sausage, chopped
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan
1 (6 ounce) can black olives, drained and chopped
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 can artichoke hearts, drained
3 tomatoes or 1 cup grape tomatoes, chopped
1 (.7 ounce) package dry Italian-style salad dressing mix
3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 tablespoon granulated garlic
Salt & pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiled water until al dente. Drain and cool under cold water.
2. Whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, oregano, parsley, granulated garlic, Italian dressing mix, salt and pepper in a large bowl.
3. Add the cooked and cooled pasta, salami, pepperoni, Parmesan cheese, black olives, artichoke hearts, red bell pepper, green bell pepper and tomatoes. Cover, and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.
I had a cucumber & some radishes that were on their last days, so I cut them up and added red onion, garlic cloves, peppercorns, a variety of dried herbs, one cup of vinegar (half white + half red wine vin... you could also use apple cider vin, really whatever you have on hand) and one cup of water. I let it sit in my fridge for the past couple days, and *viola* made some delicious & gut-healthy quick pickles that avoided food waste! 🥒🎉 - Probiotics are important in fighting/preventing sickness... along with vitamins, minerals, lots of water, rest, sunshine, and LAUGHTER! #perlesbham First up on my errands foray in this ordinarily lazy Sunday was Penzy’s Spices in Homewood. Today’s absolutely free no purchase necessary give away was my choice of any 2 quarter cup jar of spice. I got the roasted granulated garlic. I use fresh garlic for most things, but this instantly makes ordinary buttered toast into garlic bread, flavored butter for vegetables, and so much more. After that I dropped some books n movies due tomorrow into the library night drop and stopped at circleK for a cheap 4-pk of Icehouse to go with a reheat of yesterday’s pizza for lunch. Had 1 piece for breakfast now 2 pieces heating for lunch. I’ll figure out dinner later. Cheers and happy Sunday y’all. #iphonephotography #spices #penzysspices #garlic #garlicbread #cooking #cookingtips #kitchentips #kitchen #perleskitchen #sunday #icehouse #beer (at Penzeys Spices) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bng6LgHnvHQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lx63t9rhdgin
