something i think about is the clear contrast between darkrai and cresselia in terms of their control over their abilities. everyone knows how darkrai's abilities are: how darkrai cannot control its power, how what it does is on instinct and almost never intended. but i've never seen anyone compare it to how cresselia has basically full control over her power. i've not seen anyone talk about how its explicitely stated by calaba in legends: arceus that "cresselia did not give her lunar feather maybe because she believed we did not need it" (paraphrased). she is quite literally able to pick and choose who she wants her powers to affect, who she will give her feathers/blessing to.

tying it to this other post i made (tl;dr: cresselia goes outside a lot and darkrai simply does not), think about how darkrai could already be isolating itself from the world, just sitting on an island far away from others, and its powers STILL affect someone in sinnoh. meanwhile cresselia has to go out and give out her feathers herself, her powers dont "leak out" the same way darkrai's do.

i'm also gonna stretch a bit and note how darkrai's dark void is only 50%/80% accuracy, which could symbolize how it never has full control over its powers, whilst cresselia's lunar dance + lunar blessing are both moves that are guaranteed to work every time, which could symbolize how she always has control over her powers.

to add some extra irony, i'll end this by taking a quick look at their designs connected to this whole control over abilities thing. cresselia has NO LIMBS, and yet she's the one with a real grip on her powers. meanwhile darkrai has both arms/hands and legs, and it has no hold on its powers. more role reversal-ish stuff... yeah i think thats all for now

might be the biggest mega darkrai stretch i'll ever claim but i do what i can for possible lunar duo content

what if. and hear me out on this for just a second. all the magenta-pink in mega darkrai was it subconsciously trying to imitate cresselia.

i mean, just look at cresselia. she has magenta-pink. it's on her wings, her weird little paw-wing-chest thingies, her forehead, her EYES. and guess where you mainly see the pink in mega darkrai. ITS EYES. also, the little blue accents that surround mega darkrai's pupil are somewhat shaped like CRESCENT MOONS. obviously the color of the accents is in reference to darkrai's original eye color but imagine it's also slightly referencing the fact that... that cresselia is blue...

and if i also may, mega darkrai's hair looks SLIGHTLY LIKE CRESSELIA'S WEIRD CRESCENT CROWN THING.

PLEASE. DARKRAI'S SIDE HAIR THINGS ARE LIKE THE CRESCENTS FRAMING THE SIDES OF CRESSELIA'S FACE. AND THE LONG THING ON THE TOP LOOKS LIKE THE CRESCENT ON THE TOP OF HER HEAD. PLEASE. also mega darkrai's bangs kinda look like cresselia's forehead gem thing. but that's like a really really long stretch i won't say anything about it other than that. also i know m.darkrai's hair is probably meant to mimic AZ's hair but things can have multiple inspirations it's ok 🥹🥹🥹

also mega darkrai doesn't have limbs (which is horrifying and must be incredibly not good for darkrai both physically and mentally) but you know who else doesn't have limbs. cresselia. im losing it.

"but zappernewmoon! why would darkrai try to imitate cresselia anyway???" you see, young fellow... it's to try and combat mega darkrai's overwhelming nightmare aura. in a desperate attempt to lessen the impact of its rogue mega evolution on others, darkrai subconsciously mimics aspects of cresselia in its mega evolution to try and imitate her ability to dispel its nightmares. it knows there's no cresselia around (take one look at her base speed and you'll know she will NOT be able to get there in time even if she was aware) so it kinda tries to turn into a replacement cresselia instead. fails miserably but the poor thing was going through a LOT of pain so it's not gonna look pretty

yeah that concludes my mad ramblings. yeah. im gonna Lose It !

Urbain/Taunie's dialog during the PLZA DLC boss fight makes it really clear that they genuinely have no idea what the fuck a "Darkrai" is:

Meanwhile, in PLA, Melli knows what a Cresselia is (he does try to pull the "you probably wouldn't know this" dialogue but that's probably less a genuine expectation that you wouldn't know and more Melli being. Melli), and doesn't really seem that surprised to see it hanging around. This makes sense because Darkrai tries to hide away from everyone at all times to prevent anyone from getting hurt, while Cresselia doesn't have those limitations and seems to interact with people more openly.

What I'm getting at is that this is probably the closest thing we can get to defining the difference between a mythical and a legendary (baring in mind that it's really just a gameplay mechanic term and so there's no universal definition that works). Both are powerful Pokemon, but legendaries are well-documented; they're rare to see but there's no doubt they exist, and there's been folklore written about them for centuries. Conversely, mythicals are so rare their existence was probably debatable until recent scientific advancements (so Bigfoot if we learned recently that Bigfoot was real).

In other words, if you pulled a random person in the Pokemon world off the street (i.e., not a high-level trainer like Korrina) and asked them about Cresselia they'd be like "oh yeah that's the one that makes good dreams or something right" but if you asked them about Darkrai there's a decent chance they'd be like "wait what do you mean that's a real Pokemon. I thought it was a creepypasta"

There are a fair amount of depictions of Cresselia and Darkrai as rivals, but to be honest I feel like that angle is kind of boring from a character perspective, as it just falls into the standard "evil creature is always evil and good creature is always good" trope.

Conversely, the other way to depict them is as allies, which is a more interesting take. Darkrai (at least in the mainline games' continuity) does not want to hurt anyone. It makes sense that, while it might be envious of Cresselia, it would also be grateful that her abilities work as a hard counter to its own.

However, while there isn't any real basis for this, I like to take it a step further and think of the two as being hard counters to each other. Cresselia's good dreams are wonderful, and help to ensure deep REM sleep—so deep, in fact, that it can accidentally overdo it and lull people into a borderline comatose state by giving them dreams so good they don't want to wake up. The fix? Darkrai showing up and inducing nightmares in order to force the person awake.

This creates a more ying-and-yang dynamic between the two. Cresselia balances Darkrai; Darkrai balances Cresselia. You can't have the night sky without the moon; you can't have the moon without the night sky. Does this make sense to anyone else or do I just sound insane
