Makuta, Master of Shadows

A revamp of good ol’ Terry, aiming to get a bit closer to his movie design. I really tried to lean into the lore of this being a fully mechanical suit being piloted by a cloud of antidermis (“fart-powered mecha” as someone on discord called it), and even managed to incorporate a light brick into his chest to illuminate the central antidermis tank. I’m also really proud of how the black Ignika incorporates into the torso design from an aesthetic and lore perspective… both that mask and the 3D printed Kraakhan came from the unbeatable Buryumocs.

The Dream…

Okay, so I know I’ve definitely had “The Dream”™️ before, but it’s been a long time and I don’t think I ever wrote it down. But last night, I had a slightly weird variation on it.

My partner and I (and I think my family?) were either at Legoland or a related attraction like a Discovery Center. We were in a large indoor space for “Build and Learn” type activities, and on a big oval table in the middle of the room… were the bonkles.

Rather than being in a big pile or in canisters, they were inside books. The covers and general style reminded me of DK illustrated guides or those science books we all got from the library growing up, but instead of pages on the inside, there was just a hollow space full of Lego pieces… most of which were Bionicle.

There were a few varieties, each with a different set of pieces in unique color schemes. I think there was one that was mostly dark blue, maybe another that was dark red, but the one I paid the most attention to was mostly sand green (of course) with accents of magenta or pink. In the dream, I checked the publishing/copyright date for the “books,” which was 2020 despite the fact that most of the pieces were from 2006 (I remember a lot of Piraka heads and shin pieces) alongside a couple of bits from the Ben10 buildable figures. I remember thinking that meant that Lego didn’t actually retire the molds for those pieces, and had been making them for these building books until at least 2020.

Then came the weirdest part of the dream. Behind the building table was a small cubby in the wall just big enough to crawl into. There was a short line leading up to it, and once I got to the end of it I crawled inside to see a small white room with LED light strips on the back wall. It was cuboid and only about as deep as it was tall, so there wasn’t really anywhere to go… but the idea was that it would give you some kind of horrifying vision or nightmare, then immediately make you forget it when exiting the cubby.

Now I must stress — this didn’t turn the dream into a nightmare. I just crawled in, saw the room, then came out not remember what happened (or more accurately, it felt like nothing happened). My partner and I then walked out of the exhibit, and the last thing I remember is one of the employees berating another about letting an adult go into the cubby.

So yeah… according to my brain, Lego kept making Bionicle pieces for Dorling Kindersley up to the start of the Pandemic, but only if you go in the room with the nightmare cubby (which might actually be a scam).

Toa Voku - Wrath and Thunder

The Southernmost Island of the Matoran Universe was a place few ever thought of and even fewer considered worth exploring. At the literal end of everything the Matoran knew, it was connected to nowhere, led nowhere, and as far as anyone knew, was completely uninhabited. But the Great Beings did not create anything without a purpose, and this forgotten isle had one secret that was more than worth protecting.

Voku had no memory of how she became a Toa of Lightning… when she first awoke from the darkness before time, she was already a seasoned warrior — tall, proud, and quick to anger as the storm. Her axe, which she named Stormbringer, cleft rahi and rahkshi whenever they threatened her home, and her kanohi Miru allowed her to scale tree and mountain to descend upon her foes like an avenging demon. The small village she protected — a mix of vo-, ba-, and ga-matoran — had no knowledge of the wider universe or its happenings, and so revered Voku as a protector spirit, maybe even a demi-god. They all knew they were created and guided by Mata Nui… but without a chronicler or a turaga to recite the Legend of the Bionicle, they created their own mythologies out of wholecloth. And at the heart of all of them was the one thing none of them knew how to explain… the door in the mountain.

In all their eons of isolation, the door was sealed fast, and not even Voku’s great strength could force it open. A constant guard was kept by the Matoran out of fear that it might one day open and bring forth their doom… but that day never came. Instead, two strange Toa at the head of an army arrived one day with a warning that the end was nigh. They warned that the Makuta — an evil that none on the island had ever heard of — had taken control of their universe, and that a final battle for all life was brewing beyond the door in the mountain. And then — using an ancient key held in secret by the Order of Mata Nui since the Great Spirit first awoke — they opened it, and nothing was ever the same.

Toa Novus - Earth and Steel

Of all the Matoran, few had less regard for the virtue of “Destiny” than the Nynrah ghosts. They were scientists, engineers… and even though didn’t know the true nature of their universe, they still viewed it with a cold, mechanistic eye. Blindly the risk, the various Nynrah clans tried to create their own protectors, giving birth to outcasts like Prototype, Gaardus, and many more who either didn’t survive their transformations or whose names were lost to history. And yet they pressed on, defying fate with each experiment… until one day, against all odds, it actually worked.

Novus was never the best inventor. An Onu-Matoran miner by trade, he found a second vocation amongst the ghosts as an engineer, improving the designs of his brothers and sisters in a quiet, workmanlike fashion. Despite his contributions, he never thought much of his abilties… so when a surprise Visorak raid nearly destroyed his village and the call went out for volunteers, he was the first in line for the experiments.

There were many who were hesitant to call what he became a Toa… even some of his fellow ghosts. His body looked stunted and frail, almost stretched out. While he was stronger than he’d been as a matoran, he would never come close to matching the physical strength or speed of his brothers — not without help. He could control his element and utilize Kanohi masks… but he found it difficult to connect to the earth, and he struggled to access the full power of a great mask. But these were engineering problems, and there were no greater engineers than the Ghosts. His noble Ruru was fitted with a heads up display to enhance his senses, and an additional pair of cybernetic arms were grafted to his back, fitted with modular tools and weapons that could be swapped out or upgraded whenever needed. And while few of his fellow heroes would ever fully trust him or believe that he had truly been destined to become a Toa, Novus did hold fast to his own unique interpretation of one of the three virtues: that these powers meant he had a duty to the Matoran, no matter how he had acquired them.

My entry for the Bionicle: Ignition Av-Matoran Joust… meet Spektra!

To look at Spektra, most would assume they were a warrior: a fighter armed with sword and shield, ready to take on the forces of darkness. Nothing could be further from the truth. A biologist by trade, Spektra was one of the first in the Matoran Universe to discover the existence and effects of Pit Mutagen following the great cataclysm. Regularly descending into the swamp of secrets to study the mutated flora and fauna it produced, Spektra used a spiked machete to cut through the thick vines overgrowing the marsh, as well as an electro-shield to dissuade any Rahi who became too aggressive to simply avoid with their hover-jets. However, when the Makuta invaded their home and began destroying Av-Matoran villages, Spektra used their knowledge of the swamps to evade capture as they began an entirely new line of study: how to undo the effects of shadow leeches. There was one unusual Rahi they’d seen circling in the skies overhead that was of particular interest…

New mask just arrived from Buryu’s Forge, so it’s time for another member of Jovan’s Team, the Toa Ignika. Everyone… meet Nycte

A rare female Toa of Sonics originating from the central region of the Southern Continent, Nycte joined Jovan and his team out of a love for the hunt… both for the Mask of Life, and for those who would try to keep it from her. While her optical sensors were damaged during her Matoran life, she used both her Kanohi Elda and her echolocation abilities to map her environment and locate hidden enemies. Shortly before the mission to find the Ignika began, she had herself fitted with a pair of retractable gliding wings, which she used in combination with controlled ultrasonic blasts to achieve flight. Despite the stakes of their quest, Nycte tended to treat the whole thing as a game: a chance for glory and adventure sorely lacking in her homeland. That quickly changed when she saw her comrade don the Mask of Life one instant… and vanish from the world the next.

Toa Rode - Truth and Vengence

In the years following the Great Disruption, the Matoran of Metru Nui — but especially the crafters of Ta-Metru — were forcibly returned to work under extreme schedules, constant surveillance, and brutal discipline in order to undo the damage to the Great Spirit the civil war had caused. One such crafter, however — a recent Su-Matoran transplant to the City of Legends — saw the harm such policies were causing and began organizing for a general strike across the island. While he only sought better working conditions for his brothers, Dume and Makuta Teridax branded him a traitor to Mata Nui, had him arrested, and shipped him off to the Brotherhood’s black site prison without trial: Kra-Wahi.

Located on a barren spit of land in the barely populated eastern peninsula, Kra-Wahi was where the Makuta sent many of their political enemies to be forgotten before the Great Cataclysm. Consisting mostly of troublemaking and rebellious Matoran, the prisoners were subjected to cruel experiments by their Makuta overseer, vicious reprisals by the Suuvahk guards, and worst of all… the games.

In order to prevent the Matoran from uniting against them, the Makuta instituted gladiator-style fighting tournaments between the inmates. Winners received preferential treatment and improved living conditions (which led the other Matoran to view them as traitors), while losers were sealed into Matoran-spheres for weeks or months at a time. This often led to severe memory loss and cognitive degradation over time… which is exactly what became of the inmate the Makuta called Ro.

“Un-naming” was a common practice in Kra-Wahi, with prisoners not being allowed to use their given names… only their prisoner designations. And with memory loss extremely common, most of the inmates forgot who they were in very short order. However, many of them crafted their own identities to replace them… and Ro eventually took “Rode” as his new name, from the Matoran word for Truth.

He languished and fought in the prison for many centuries, until finally the Toa Nuva destroyed the prison and freed the inmates as part of their preparations to awaken the Great Spirit. That freedom was short lived, however, as Teridax’s victory soon made the entire universe a prison. All hope was not lost, however, and when one of the Toa fighting Makuta’s legions fell defending Rode and his companions, she passed her power on to the Su-Matoran, and he rose anew as a Toa of Plasma.

Lilla - Matoran Form

Here’s my self-moc Lilla before she became a Toa, shortly after she left her old village. At that point she still wore her old Kanohi Hau, but eventually traded it for the noble Matatu she’d later wear as a Toa in order to signify her new life and identity. The mask, along with her chosen name, was gifted by the Turaga at her first Naming Day celebration in her new home.

First moc of 2026? Let’s make it a self-moc! Introducing Lilla, Sister of the Green

Born into a Bo-Matoran village on coast of the southern continent, Lilla never felt she fit in with her so-called brothers. While they spent most of their time tending their gardens or exploring the jungles outside the village, she preferred the calm quiet of the tide pools and shorelines they mostly ignored. So when she ran into a group of Ga-Matoran traders from a neighboring village while floating out in the waves, she quickly realized the real reason for her feelings of unease in her own armor.

Traveling back with her merchant sisters, she took the name Lilla and began a new life in the village of water. While the Turaga was initially concerned, those worries soon vanished as Lilla became a cornerstone of the community, tending to the hydroponic gardens that helped feed the village during slow fishing seasons. And when their resident Toa fulfilled her destiny and became a new Turaga, she passed her power on to Lilla, transforming her into a new Toa of the Green.
