9.14AM - Thereâs so much to do yet so little time omg đ±
Wau, thank you very much :) It really help me :) But I have one question- I always have problem that I donÂŽt understand topic. Or a way how something is working. What in this case ? I need to learn it, but I donÂŽt know. It is depressing. I am confused and depressed due to misunderstanding topic :( It is my everlasting struggle with chemistry :(
I hope you donât mind me making this answer public (if you do message me and iâll delete it) because I think others can benefit from it. Many people buzz through many science topics that they donât actually understand and making notes on it lets them live in the delusion that they do. The following are they ways I try to understand something:
1. A very good example is the henderson hasselbalch equation for acids and bases or the born haber cycle for lattice energy. I see so many kids in my class just rote learn it. Because it seems to complicated to be approached in any other way. First off, Â you need to ask yourself, âdo I want to remember this till the exams or do I want to remember it for a lifetime?â, if you want to do the latter, it is only possible if you try to understand the topic.Â
2. It is not easy. Understanding does not come easy. Which is why many people donât seek it. You will be very frustrated and angry and feel hopeless at times. I wrote this post a while back where I said, whenever you think âi donât get this shitâ add the word yet at the end. So âi donât understand this, yet" or "I am not good at this, yet". So there will be a time when you will master it.Â
3. Use the resources available to you - I read wikipedia pages, chem blogs, youtube lectures, textbooks etc. to understand the topic. Most of the times nothing makes sense because that stuff goes into too much detail, but once in a while you will stumble upon a wonderful explanation that opens your mind and  you see the theory and reasoning behind it all. The joy you get when that happens is tremendous.Â
4. Try explaining it to your mom/dad/sibling/friend - I use my whiteboard to explain it to my bunny to make sure I understand a particularly hard topic myself.
5. Eliminate distractions - I am a huge procrastinator. But when I actually get to studying, my focus is sharp. That one hour or two, I donât allow anything to get in the way. When you are struggling with a topic, it is natural to take one too many breaks and it has an impact on your learning. When you study, focus.Â
Stop feeling hopeless. If you keep thinking you will never âgetâ chemistry, you never will. Remember - âhe who thinks he can and he who thinks he canât, are both usually right.â
Hope this helps :) Iâll be happy to answer other questions you have!

finally, back to studying
Itâs difficult to follow your dream. Itâs a tragedy not to.

just took my first organic chemistry quiz. it really wasnât that bad. but in the wise words of my professor âdonât get too overconfident if something is easy for you. there are always harder thingsâ
and then naturally todayâs lecture on newmannâs projections and chair and boat structures...
medschoolmanic hey so a friend actually sent me a pdf copy of organic chemistry as a second language and I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but i definitely will check it out now that I have it! thanks :)Â

and then naturally today's lecture on newmann's projections and chair and boat structures completely lost me.Â
also if anyone wants to help me practice identifying what type of isomer two structures are (constitutional isomers, stereoisomers, or neither) or has any tips on how to distinguish between them, then you should totally stop by my inbox and let me know.Â
what major are you doing? what kind of science do you get to do in a lab? love your blog :)
hey! thank you so much :) that means a lot!Â
iâm a neuroscience major, public health minor! and iâm doing neuroscience research in lab. weâre looking at the effects of different types of diets and their effects on various functions and aspects of the brain-including learning, memory, and rate of hyperpolarizations just to name a few things.Â
donât hesitate to ask if you have anymore question!Â
up way too early on a holiday to workout and get into lab to get some science done!Â
Essential Productivity Apps for any student:
Caffeine- Â Prevents your screen from going into sleep mode. Great if youâre writing notes on an article and the screen keeps dimming, whilst you hope that if you stare long enough, the phrase âhomologous ways to a view of hegemonyâ will start to make sense.
Flux-Â If you find that you canât sleep for ages after studying late at night, then this app is a total game changer. It basically turns the light on the screen red, because science people say that blue light keeps you awake and red light doesnât. (*Full Disclosure* Iâm not a scientist)
Focusbar- The annoying voice of your mother nagging you to finish your homeworkâŠin app form. You can set the annoying level (I have it set on âwildly annoyingâ) and a bar will appear in the corner every few seconds to remind you that youâre supposed to be doing something else besides looking at cat photos.Â
Microsoft Office-Â self explanatory, so Iâve linked to an article about life hacks for Microsoft Office instead. Because Iâm just that awesome.Â
Nag-Â Does your 5 minute study break keep turning into an hour on Youtube? Then you need Nag in your life. Itâs basically an alarm/timer. But an extremely loud and annoying alarm/timer thatâs very difficult to ignore. The bells genuinely sound more judgemental the longer you ignore it. Â
Self Control-  Also known as Cold Turkey for Microsoft users. If you absolutely cannot be trusted with an internet connection, then you need Self Control in your life. You add a list of websites to the âblacklistâand then set how long you want the app to work for, and for that duration of time you wont be able to access those website. Seriously, not even rebooting your computer or uninstalling the app will let you access the blacklist until your time is up. Tough love at its finest.
Zotero-Â Â The new love of my life. Zotero allows you to manage all your citations and sources in one easy place. Itâs an absolute life saver- no joke. Thereâs an in-word add in, so it will write your bibliography and citations for you in any format you want. Thereâs a chrome/firefox add in and a mobile app, so you donât even have to type the citation into Zotero. Just press the button it does all the hard work for you. It even updates itself online, so you can still access your bibliography if your computer crashes. I <3 Zotero 5eva.Â
