Theory of Love Whisper/Summer Rain/Time For The Moon Night by Gfriend
So, first of all, this is just a theory and I'm not used to do this or anything so... there will be some inconsistencies around stuff that I can't quite understand (yet) but please -- just bear with me.
Well! Let’s start.
After watching and linking the music videos I’ll be talking about, you should know that they don't exactly obey a chronological order -- the flashbacks in TFTMN show that really well -- so I will be going back and forth while writing this.
For starters, LW is the first part of the story and it depicts the girls happily living in something like a paradise until Yerin hears something weird in her recorder (or whatever that is, lol) and they decide to follow it.
Well, the setting of the MV led me to think that they are not human. Gfriend must be some kind of spiritual beings or anything like that.
So, they are in their house and Yerin hears something from a certain.. radio station and the voice, that I will be addressing as the Whisperer, guides them throughout LW. I assume, by the song title that the Whisperer tells them about love… human love. It probably talks about how wonderful that feeling is and that they could experience it if they followed the sounds.
Yerin, taking almost a leadership position, feels quite intrigued and convinces the girls to go -- which isn't difficult since they were all curious about it.
So, then it begins. They travel through their world, taking a train and walking through a forest… always listening closely to the whispers/sounds that were leading them to where they were supposed to go.
Their final destination is that tree at the end of the MV and they see the butterfly as the one who was guiding them… this entity that no one is sure who it is or what are their motivations to be talking and guiding the girls.
I get that the moment they turned that recorder on, they were transported to the human world. And this is where some things start to overlap between SR and TFTMN.
I believe the happy moments they were living in TFTMN are from before SR and right after they arrive in the human world… the girls, there, are experiencing their friendship as its best, doing things “human” friends do.
However, as time passes, Eunha falls in love with a human and had her heart brutally broken by that stupid person (probably cheating).
She realizes that as much as human love is wonderful, the pain that comes with it is unbearable. Eunha isn't a human, so she doesn't know how to handle the pain and none of the girls know how to help her either… this leads to their group slowly falling apart.
That's why in SR we don't have scenes (besides the dancing ones) with them together. After Eunha left, the girls didn’t stay together… Yerin felt like it was all her fault; Yuju felt angry she couldn’t help; Sowon wanted to bring them together, but she couldn’t find the way to do it; SinB felt the loneliness take over her life; and Umji… was left alone like a little boat in the middle of a storm.
However, even things seem to be hopeless, we see that SinB reads something that makes her surprised… and I think that the notebook she found must’ve some clue of either how they could fix Eunha or go back. Things get a little foggy for me here, but my guess is that, somehow, Eunha ends up contacting the Whisperer or some other entity and when she does that, she is again manipulated and her soul is detached from her body and she is transported to some other realm.
Her body dies on Earth and the grave we see Yuju leaning on in the MV is hers.
The girls are still living in the human world as they hadn’t found a way of going back - nor wanted to without their friend. We can clearly see how they’ve changed with the time passage (SinB has a more angsty posture, Sowon looks apathetic etc), but most feeling remain and this is shown by how regretful and sad Yerin feels.
The scene in which Yerin gets that tape player and cries (beautifully, if I may add) is so strong. We can feel how she thinks she shouldn’t have followed that voice; how it is all her fault that they are stuck in this foreign world and how one of her friends is dead.
Well, moving on and going to Eunha, we see that she is, at first, in a field and in a house with a window, so she doesn’t look trapped even though she is. That scene in which we see the girls running towards her is, in my opinion, created by Eunha’s loneliness. The place she’s at is actually an illusion of whatever is messing with them since LW and she knows that. It is shown that she is actually inside a very cheap room, locked up and alone.
While that, Umji is still alone. And we can see how emotionally hurt she is. Umji is constantly folding and throwing paper planes that inevitably fail to fly; they are just paper and they can’t get far no matter how hard they try… they’ll never really fly. And that’s how she feels. We can see she is physically hurt as well; her knees are bloody and covered in bandaids and that only tell us how she is unprotected -- after all, she is the youngest of them, she was supposed to be in care of Sowon and the others… but now, now they’re all gone. And she can’t do anything about it… she just stays there, endlessly and uselessly folding paper planes.
Yerin is in similar situation. I also think the scene in which Sowon approaches her and makes her smile is her mind’s illusion -- a method of coping with the loneliness, the good… the bad memories and the guilt. But here’s come something very interesting… that I’ll address later on. Just keep the place where this happens (the room with the lamps) in mind.
So. There we go to Yuju and the balloons. The way she released them made me think that she was giving up, but after Umji sees it and later on they are all together, I think the balloons actually brought the girls together. It was like a call… Yuju was pleading them to do something about all of that.
Anyway. We know that SinB was probably the one who helped Eunha get in touch with… whatever that ended up locking her away, therefore, SinB knew something about it and she is, indeed, capable of finding Eunha.
So, when they show us SinB opening the door to Eunha’s room, it’s is perfectly acceptable to think that she was rescuing Eunha. However, there is another take, in which she is searching through the night with the other girls. And what does this mean? Well, in my understanding, the SinB that opens the door is not the real SinB.
On Earth, the five of them are searching for Eunha with the flashlight and everything and, while that, Eunha is meeting up with fake versions of them. We see them playing a game, laughing, finally happy to be reunited, but… just observe the awkwardness in how they all hug Eunha. It looks fake and Eunha looks terribly uncomfortable, like she knows those girls are not her friends.
And the Eunha the girls find in the end and sit side by side is not the real Eunha as well; the way “she” looked at the camera seemed extremely suspicious to me since the first time I watched it, and as I tried to figure out what was happening I came to a simple conclusion: there have been a swap.
Why? I still don’t know. I also couldn’t make much of the meaning the fish tank has or that box Yuju left on Eunha’s grave, but my thoughts are that someone is messing with them and the fact that I don’t why is literally eating me up lol.
Oh, yeah. About the room with the lamps.
It seemed really strange for the illusion of the girls with Eunha and the scenario Yerin created were both set on that room. I think it’s really improbable that they are in the same realm by that time, but I do think there’s a connection there. Maybe the one making Yerin so depressed is the same who locked Eunha away…
Maybe Yerin is the real target of all of this and not Eunha.
But I mean… these are just speculations.
